Terranova is an American science fiction - television series by Kelly Marcel and Craig Silverstein . It was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and DreamWorks Television from 2010 to 2011 . As Executive Producer act Steven Spielberg , Brannon Braga and Jon Cassar , while Peter Chernin as a producer is involved. Brian Tyler is responsible for the music . In the US, the series started on September 26, 2011 on Fox with the 90-minute pilot episode, while the broadcast in Germany began on February 27, 2012.

action

The series begins in the year 2149 when the survival of mankind on planet earth is threatened by overpopulation, environmental pollution and the destruction of vegetation that it causes. Scientists experimented about 20 years ago when they discovered an anomaly that allows people to travel 85 million years back in time, to the last third of the Cretaceous , in what is believed to be an alternative timeline .

The Shannon family, consisting of father Jim, mother Elisabeth and their three children Josh, Maddy and Zoe, get into legal trouble because Zoe is illegal as the third child. When this is discovered, Jim, who loses his composure and attacks a security guard, goes to prison for several years. Two years later, Elisabeth, valuable in her position with several academic degrees for such an expedition, and her two legal children are included in the list of the tenth wave of resettlement to Terra Nova , the first civilization in the past. In a well-planned action, Jim breaks out on the day of his departure and smuggles himself into the stream of emigrants with false IDs, where he meets his family. Zoe, who is still illegal, is smuggled in a bag.

When they reach their destination, they begin a new life in an environment that is the opposite of what they have known before: sunlight, an open sky, oxygen-rich and breathable air, “real” food, free-living plants and animals, etc. They have to do this deal with, among other things, carnivorous dinosaurs and the so-called "Sixers", a split of the sixth wave of resettlement among colonists.

Terra Nova is a well-planned and spacious settlement that is surrounded by a ring of buildings in a valley. Fields are created within this ring; On the outside, the ring is surrounded by a sturdy, high fence and is guarded by armed guards to keep intruders out. The facility is managed by Commander Nathaniel Taylor.

production

Alex Graves signaled in May 2010 that he would be directing the pilot episode . Brannon Braga was the showrunner on the series. Filming for the pilot began in November 2010 in southeast Queensland , Australia and lasted just under two months. According to Fox, the series had a budget of $ 4 million per episode. Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said, “This thing is getting big. It will be an enormous responsibility for production. "

Terra Nova was officially ordered as a series on May 17, 2010 . The start of the series should take place in the midseason 2010-2011, but was later postponed to autumn 2011. The announced panel on Terra Nova at San Diego Comic-Con 2010 was canceled because not enough material was available. The pilot episode was initially estimated to cost over $ 20 million, but was later estimated at $ 14 million. Further filming began on May 25, 2011 in Brisbane , Gold Coast and the Gold Coast hinterland , as well as in the Warner Roadshow Studios in Oxenford . The Frankfurt company Pixomondo was responsible for the visual effects .

Since the production of the series was very complex, the usual 22 episodes could not be produced in the time available, so that the first season only consists of 13 episodes. After the series remained in the ratings below the expectations of the station Fox, the cancellation of the series became known in March 2012. However, the production studio involved is still looking for another broadcaster. After initial discussions with Netflix , on March 27, 2012, the company declined to take over and broadcast in the United States.

Casting

In June 2010, the first cast member was announced - Jason O'Mara as Jim Shannon. Allison Miller joined the cast in late August . In September, Deadline Hollywood reported that Stephen Lang on the role of Commander would take Nathaniel Taylor. The Executive Producer David Fury left the series by creative differences. In September Shelley Conn received the lead female role. Mido Hamada joined the cast in October . The three children were cast with Landon Liboiron , Naomi Scott, and Alana Mansour . At the beginning of November 2010, Christine Adams joined the ensemble as Mira . In May 2011, Rod Hallett was promoted to lead actor.

In 2147 each family is only allowed to have two children due to overpopulation, but policeman Jim and his wife, doctor Elisabeth, have a third child. When this is discovered by the population control officers and Jim attacks one of them, he is sentenced to six years in prison. Two years later, his wife, who with her several academic degrees is valuable for such an expedition, is included in the list of the tenth wave of resettlement to Terra Nova. However, since she is only allowed to take her two legal children, Josh and Maddy, with her, she helps Jim escape jail so that he can join her with her five-year-old daughter Zoe.

After Jim manages the trip back in time with the help of a bribed security guard, Commander Nathaniel Taylor is not very enthusiastic about Jim's arrival. He assigns him to the farming group, while Elisabeth takes care of the settlement's patients as a doctor. Meanwhile, Josh meets a group of rebellious teenagers who live together in the same house, including a girl named Skye with whom he gets along well.

Skye and her friends take Josh on an exploration tour of the jungle. At a waterfall, Skye shows him some unusual rock art and asks him to keep them a secret. Meanwhile, Elisabeth is attacked by a Sixer. The Sixers came to Terra Nova with the sixth wave of resettlement, but for apparently inexplicable reasons they opposed Terra Nova and founded a rival colony. Jim saves Commander Taylor from one of those Sixers who wanted to kill him and is then accepted into the security team of the settlement.

It comes to its first use shortly afterwards, as a couple of Sixers and two Carnotaurs are heading for the settlement. The guards can fend off the dinosaurs, but the Sixers manage to get inside. Mira, the leader of the Sixer, then suggests a deal to Taylor in which they give him meteor trips and get one of their captured men back. As the teenagers return to the settlement, they notice that some Sixers have stolen the battery packs from their vehicle. They are then of Schlitzern (eng. Slashers ), the fictitious Acceraptoren attacked and the security team of Terra Nova launches an ultimately successful rescue operation.

Three of Commander Taylor's men were attacked by an unknown species of pterosaur while driving the van. When these pterosaurs attack humans in Terra Nova as well, Elisabeth and Malcolm Wallace, the chief science officer and Elisabeth's former fellow student, do further research.

When it turns out that Terra Nova was built on a former breeding site for the pterosaurs and that they are now trying to return to their old territory, Elisabeth and Malcolm produce gallons of pheromone of the species. With the help of these pheromones, Jim and Commander Taylor lure away the attacking dinosaurs, so that peace returns to Terra Nova.

Radio contact with a remote outpost has been broken. Since Commander Taylor assumes it is a technical problem, he drives Elisabeth to the station. Jim, who has caught a cold, stays behind for the time being. When Commander Taylor and Elisabeth arrive at the station, they find the crew confused and amnesia. Elisabeth tries to find an antidote, but she and Commander Taylor are soon caught up in amnesia too.

When there is no longer any radio contact with the two, Malcolm and Jim drive to the station to come to their aid. Commander Taylor now thinks he is in the Somalia war in which he lost his wife and child. Elisabeth, who can no longer remember her family, discovers that a member of the station's crew was conducting illegal gene experiments to find a cure for a specific type of dementia, but released an infectious virus. While Malcolm is gradually gripped by the virus, Jim remains healthy. Elisabeth then concludes that his cold is an antidote to the virus and can thus create an antidote that heals everyone involved.

At a watchtower on the Terra Nova border, Alicia Washington discovers what she thinks is a sixer. When she checks with some men, it turns out that it is a little girl. During the examination in the practice, Elisabeth finds out after good persuasion that the girl's name is Leah, has only one brother and has evidently fled from the Sixers. But she also reveals that she thinks Commander Taylor is a bad person. For now she is staying with the Shannons.

After Mira stood at the gates of Terra Nova, Leah breaks into Mira's former house on her first day of school and steals a container from a secret hiding place. But Jim finds her track and can stop her. During an interrogation in the command room, Leah says that Mira would do something to her brother Sam if she didn't come back with the container. Since Taylor doesn't believe her and locks her up, Jim tries to free Sam. He ends up in a trap of the Sixers and is brought to one of their tree houses. Mira tells him that Terra Nova was not only built to save humanity.

The radio link between Terra Nova and relay station 19a has failed. The young soldier Foster is sent to the relay station for repairs. After Foster hears a strange noise, he assumes that an employee has locked himself in again. However, he gets no answer, whereupon he unlocks the door and is killed by a predatory dinosaur. For Malcolm it is clear that Foster forgot to close the door behind him and was attacked by a Nikoraptor. But Jim's police instinct doesn't stop at this case either, whereupon he enters the building and finds suspicious leads. Jim asks his wife, Elizabeth, to examine the dead soldier. However, she finds traces of another dinosaur, now Jim is more and more certain that it was murder.

Commander Taylor then instructs Washington and Jim to look for the killer. Foster's friends point them out to a woman he often looked at pictures on his electronic dog tag. After interrogation, Jim and Washington go to the hospital and have Foster give them their personal belongings, but the box does not contain the dog tag. Washington advises Jim that the brand has built in a location transmitter. Taylor watches the tag move, whereupon they believe the dinosaur has eaten the tag. They set out on the hunt with off-road vehicles and motorcycles and Taylor eventually kills the dinosaur. Washington finds Foster's dog tag in his stomach. On the badge, they see a woman who works in the casino, whereupon they interrogate the woman.

A meteor did not completely burn up after entering the earth's atmosphere. Shortly before the impact, it explodes and triggers an electromagnetic pulse , which destroys all of the electronics in Terra Nova. Thus all tracking systems and the electronic weapons of the security department are worthless. When Mira learns about this, she and her followers drive a Spinosaurus to the colony to distract Taylor. To repel the predator, the colonists set fires around the city. Meanwhile, Sixers invade the colony to retrieve the mysterious box that appeared in the fifth episode. After a few fights, the Sixers manage to escape.

Late that night, Mira meets with Taylor's son, Lucas, who lives in the jungle, and gives him the box. When he opens it, a hologram of formulas appears that looks like the ones on the rocks by the falls.

A well-known scientist from the year of origin is in Terra Nova and happens to be also an idol of Maddy. She has him sign a book. But then she realizes that the signature on the book is different from the one on a letter she received years ago. She begins to investigate and is slowly getting deadly close to the vertigo. You want to get rid of them.

On Thanksgiving Day, Maddy is rehearsing a play with Zoe and the other children that will be performed that evening. The play is about Commander Taylor entering the new land "Terra Nova". Jim, after a tip from the drugged bartender, looks for a body under the pilgrim tree. During the play rehearsal, one of the soldiers hits a dragonfly that the children are afraid of. Maddy finds a chip on the insect's leg. The dragonfly is brought to Melcome and he discovers that the not-yet-found spy and the Sixers may have communicated through this dragonfly by emitting certain frequencies that only insects can hear. The dragonfly followed these tones and brought the chips with the information on them to the spy and the sixers. Melcome repairs the insect's wings and Taylor now wants to find out who the spy is by attaching a tracking chip to the dragonfly and waiting until the spy tries to call the dragonfly again and it follows the sounds. Still wondering who it was just skeleton, he realizes that Taylor's supervisor only had one arm, like the skeleton. Now he wonders if Taylor killed him because, according to the bartender, Taylor would be in trouble if he told the colony about the corpse. The dragonfly leads Taylor Melcome and a soldier to Jim's house, whereupon Taylor arrests Jim and interrogates him alone. During the interrogation, Taylor tells Jim what it was like with the skeleton under the pilgrim tree: Lukas, Taylor's son, brought Taylor's supervisor into the new world to take over from him. Taylor refuses and has to kill his supervisor so that he could not kill him (?). Then Lukas disappears and Taylor has not seen him again until now.

Taylor then releases Jim because he only played one game with him and Jim was never to blame for anything. He's not the spy. Everyone is still happily celebrating Thanksgiving. Yet.

The change to the portal designed by Lucas works. Now it is no longer only possible to travel from the future to the Cretaceous Period, but it is now also possible in the opposite direction. As feared by Commander Taylor and his people, in the next wave of resettlement, instead of civilians and supplies, a very well armed mercenary unit will be sent to Terra Nova, which is supposed to depose Taylor and plunder the natural resources of Terra and send it into the future. The small security department of Terra Nova is overrun and the Sixers with the help of the mercenaries set up a totalitarian regime in the Terra Nova settlement. However, remnants of the security department led by Taylor can retreat into the woods to wage guerrilla warfare.

Jim Shannon, who survived the occupation by the mercenary force injured, manages to circumvent the restrictions and get in touch with Commander Taylor. He picks up the Shannon family, who are able to flee with the help of Washington. However, she is caught and shot by Lucas in front of Taylor and the Shannons. The rebels decide that the only option left is to destroy the portal in order to prevent supplies and possible reinforcements of the soldiers. However, this will also cut them off from any replenishment. A stolen bomb with extreme explosive power is smuggled into the future with Jim in one of the first ore containers. With a predatory dinosaur that he has brought with him, he can cause enough confusion to go ahead with his plan and just manages to return through the portal before the entire complex explodes. The Sixer and the mercenary troops realize that they have little chance in Terra Nova against the resistance of the civilians and against Taylor's guerrilla fighters without supplies and retreat to an area known as Badlands. Commander Taylor returns to Terra Nova in triumph. In order to research the reasons why the mercenaries chose the Badlands of all places, one of the containers left behind is examined, in which artifacts from the Badlands were to be sent into the future for research purposes. You discover a ship figurehead from the 18th century. This creates confusion and leads to wild speculation. This ends the first season.

reception

In June 2011, Terra Nova was one of eight winners for the Most Promising New Series at the Critics' Choice Television Awards .

“Our little farm meets Jurassic Park. - You absolutely cannot say that all of this is bad. It is well staged, the trick technique is good, most of the actors act professionally, it offers tension. But it is also transparent, flatter than the Netherlands and completely ungrown. And sometimes Terra Nova is prude to scream ... "
