The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 18, 2016. It led over 209 kilometers from Moirans-en-Montagne to the Swiss capital Bern . Around 100 stage kilometers were passed through Swiss territory. There was a mountain classification in the 4th category and an intermediate sprint in Ins after 167.5 kilometers.

Race course

The escape group of the day was made up of two drivers from the Etixx-Quick Step (EQS) team: Tony Martin and Julian Alaphilippe attacked about 15 minutes after the start and were able to gain a lead of about three minutes in the first hour of the race. Several drivers and groups tried to catch up with the two, but none succeeded. Martin and Alaphilippe were able to build a lead of a maximum of five minutes.

The intermediate sprint played no role for the outliers, in the field Peter Sagan (TNK) prevailed against Mark Cavendish (DDD) and Bryan Coquard (DEN). The peloton caught up, the leaders were about 1:30 minutes ahead. Tony Martin won the mountain classification about 15 kilometers from the finish, then he was caught by the field, where Julian Alaphilippe was again.

About ten kilometers from the finish, Rui Costa tried an attack, but it was unsuccessful. The pure sprinters fell behind on the small paved slope in downtown Bern. Warren Barguil (TGA) put the sprint on for his teammate John Degenkolb . In the end Degenkolb was only fourth -  Alexander Kristoff (KAT) and Peter Sagan crossed the finish line almost simultaneously, Sagan was ahead of Kristoff in the photo finish. Third was the Norwegian Sondre Holst Enger (IAM).

With his third stage win, Peter Sagan extended his lead in the points classification against Mark Cavendish to over 100 points, so that the fifth win of the green jersey can hardly be taken from him. In the other ratings there were no shifts to the top places. For the first time, two drivers, Julian Alaphilippe and Tony Martin, were recognized as the most combative drivers . The duo from the Etixx-Quick Step team led the race over 170 kilometers.
