action

Essen-Kray in April 1944: The black market trader Atze Schröder sleeps with General Strasser's wife and is caught. While he is hiding from Strasser, he overhears that he is planning a transport with the submarine U-900 by sea from Toulon across the Strait of Gibraltar to Warnemünde . However , Atze learns nothing of the freight, the Holy Grail . He steals the submarine captain's uniform as well as those of Strasser and his aide. He and his Jewish friend Samuel, whom he is hiding from the Nazis in his basement, plan to flee to New York in the hijacked submarine .

To get to France, the two confiscate the transporter of the actress Maria. Once there, they persuade Maria to help them get on board, as three officers are expected. The only one on board who suspects is First Lieutenant von Stetten. After a long odyssey, the three are exposed. After General Strasser has been brought on board, he changes course in the direction of Buenos Aires . But Samuel succeeds in sabotaging the compass in such a way that the course is set again for New York. Shortly before the coast they are discovered by an American reconnaissance plane . The Americans then gave the order to attack. Atze then reveals Strasser's real plan: He wants to take the Holy Grail to Buenos Aires, where he has already acquired a villa. Thereupon the crew mutinied and overpowered Strasser. Atze informs the Americans over the radio that they will come in peace and bring them "heaven on earth". The Americans understand in the message that he is bringing them the Holy Grail and allow the submarine to enter port.

However, Schröder says that he wants to bring them french fries . Since his first self-made deep fryer broke, he uses the Holy Grail to deep-fry the French fries, not knowing the true meaning of the cup. Von Stetten, Strasser and his adjutant are arrested, and Atze opens a fast food shop with Maria and Samuel .

criticism

According to the verdict of the Lexicon of International Films , U-900 is “a dodgy comedy attempt that is staged with a lot of noise, with some parodic approaches that are already nipped in the bud due to the lack of sense and understanding”.

The film magazine Cinema sums up that the film is "a not entirely successful mix of comedy and submarine adventure that will only satisfy Atze fans."

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
