organization
The mission of the Department of Commerce is to create jobs and secure living standards for all citizens of the United States by building the necessary infrastructure . On this basis, economic growth, competitiveness and permanent positive development should be ensured. For this purpose, the authority collects economic and demographic data through the census office in order to enable economic and political decisions. The Ministry of Commerce grants patents , the rights for trademarks (trademarks) and helps with the implementation and introduction of industry standards ( norm ).
Around 36,000 people work for the agency, which is headed by the United States Secretary of Commerce . The agency is based in the Herbert C. Hoover Building , an administrative building in the Federal Triangle just a few meters from the White House .
Ministerial situation 2011–2013
After John Bryson stepped down as Secretary of Commerce in June 2012, the Department of Commerce was pending. From June 2012 to the end of May 2013, Bryson’s Deputy Minister of Commerce, Rebecca Blank, was acting as Acting Secretary of Commerce . On May 2, 2013, Hyatt heiress Penny Pritzker was nominated by President Barack Obama as the new Secretary of Commerce.
Since Rebecca Blank became Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison on May 31 and the Senate had not yet confirmed Pritzker's nomination, President Obama found an interim solution in Cameron Kerry , brother of US Secretary of State John Kerry . Kerry headed the Commerce Department from June 1st to 25th - again only temporarily.
On June 25, 2013, the US Senate confirmed Pritzker's nomination as Secretary of Commerce with a 97-1 vote. On the following day, June 26th, the new minister was sworn to take her oath of office. Cameron Kerry accepted the post of General Counsel in the Department of Commerce.
