The Untere Gersprenz Natura 2000 area is located between Babenhausen and Reinheim in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse . The designation as FFH area 6019-303 was made with the ordinance of January 16, 2008 (amended on October 20, 2016). The meadow landscape in the area of the lower Gersprenz , which is characterized by grassland use, is protected with small proportions of dry areas and fresh to moist deciduous forests. The FFH area is embedded in the larger EU bird sanctuary Untere Gersprenzaue (6119-401).

location

The FFH area “Untere Gersprenz” is located in the natural areas of the Reinheimer Hügelland and Unterermaine levels at an altitude of 130 to 170 meters. It is located in the area of the cities and communities Babenhausen ( Hergershausen and Sickenhofen districts ), Eppertshausen ( Eppertshausen districts), Münster ( Altheim and Münster districts), Dieburg (Dieburg districts), Groß-Umstadt ( Semd districts ), Groß -zimmer (districts Large rooms and small rooms ), Otzberg (district Habitzheim ) and Reinheim (district Reinheim and Spachbrücken ).

The protected area consists of four separate sub-areas: In the south it includes the Gersprenzaue between Reinheim and Groß-Zimmer and includes the nature reservesReinheimer Teich ” and “ Scheelhecke von Groß-Zimmer ”. South of the federal highway 26 are two more parts, the "Herrensee" on the northern edge of Groß -zimmer and the "Hehnes" northwest of Semd. The largest part of the area lies between Münster, Eppertshausen and Babenhausen and includes the Hergershausen meadows and the nature reserves “ Brackenbruch bei Hergershausen ”, “ The little jellyfish of Hergershausen ” and “ On the sand between Hergershausen and Altheim ”. The total area of the FFH area is 772.9 hectares.

The areas of the FFH area are embedded in the 3232 hectare, contiguous EU bird sanctuary "Untere Gersprenzaue" (6119-401). This also includes the nature reserve " Taubensemd von Habitzheim, Semd and Groß-Umstadt ", extensive arable landscapes south of the federal highways B26 and B45 and forest areas in the east of Dieburg.

Description and history

In its lower reaches, the Gersprenz flows through gently undulating to even terrain. The area is an old cultural landscape in which grassland farming has been practiced in the floodplains and arable farming on the slightly higher locations for centuries . The open landscape is loosened up by orchards, groups of trees as well as flowing and still waters with reeds and tall perennials. This structurally rich landscape is greatly impoverished by the land consolidation in the 20th century. In 1940 the Gersprenz near Hergershausen was canalized, trees were removed, more and more meadows were drained and converted into fields. When it was designated as a nature reserve in 1984, “The little jellyfish from Hergershausen” was the last remaining part of the Hergershausen Auenwiesen.

In the area of today's Reinheimer pond, a large part of the swampy floodplain was diked after 1625 and used for fish farming. Since the beginning of the 18th century, the now silted up water again served as grassland for hay extraction. Was abandoned as such use since 1950, spread over a large area of reeds reed beds made. It was only after it was placed under protection in 1975 that the Reinheimer Teich received its present-day varied shape through flooding, the creation of open water areas and local grassland use.

Because of its great importance as a breeding and resting area for rare bird species and as a habitat for numerous amphibians, the area of the lower Gersprenz was selected for the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. In the meantime, some straightened sections of the stream between Münster and Hergershausen and south of Groß-Zimmer have been renatured again through construction work. New pools and floodplains were also created, and many fields in the floodplain are now used as grassland again.

Flora and fauna

Most of the area is grassland of fresh locations. Most of the meadows and pastures are relatively poor in species, only a few small areas are flowering and species-rich, lowland hay meadows . On an inland dune north of Altheim there are sandy lawns with silver grass , heather carnation and mountain sand bells . In the area of the “Herrensee” north of Groß -zimmer, there are meadows of pipe grass with remarkable plant species, including creeping willow , carnation and caraway-leaved silge .

Fragile chandelier algae , Berchtold's dwarf pondweed and large water fennel thrive in some of the still waters of the Hergershausen meadows . On the banks of the shallow water areas there are toad rushes , marsh marshweeds and marsh dysentery . Floating leaf plants , such as knotweed and floating pondweed , grow in a section in the Reinheimer pond and in some small ponds near Hergershausen.

Since around 2009, after more than 400 years , the beaver has returned to the Gersprenz and Reinheimer ponds. As a further endangered or protected mammals are Big / Little Bart bat , Daubenton's bat , Noctule , Pipistrelle , Common Pipistrelle and Brown / Gray long-eared called.

In the area live natterjack toad , green toad , European tree frog , spadefoot and agile frog . The occurrence of the European pond turtle in the Reinheim pond is particularly noteworthy .

The many breeding birds of the lower barnacle include bluethroat , kingfisher , gray woodpecker , black kite , spotted marsh grouse , white stork , common snipe , gray goose , gray heron , lapwing , various types of ducks, reed swirls , reed warbler , stonechat , quail and water rail . In addition, numerous migratory birds use the area as a resting place or for wintering.

Conservation and protection goals

The following habitat types are to be preserved in the FFH area :

The following plants and animals are named as conservation objectives for the species in accordance with Annex II of the Habitats Directive :

Care and management

The necessary management methods and maintenance measures are regulated by management plans.

Recreational destination

The Reinheimer pond is a popular local recreation destination. There is a three-kilometer circular path around the nature reserve, and the area can also be explored on a BioTopTour in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district (hiking route 5 km, cycling route 14 km). Information about the animals, plants and biotopes of the Unteren Gersprenzaue can be found in the “Reinheimer Teich Nature Conservation Barn” and the surrounding area. Several hiking and cycling trails as well as a BioTopTour (hiking route 5.5 km, cycling route 12 km) lead through the Hergershausen meadows. To protect the meadow breeders, the paths must not be left and dogs must be kept on a leash.
