Parish Church of St. Nicholas

Unterweißbach is a market town in Upper Austria in the district of Freistadt in the Mühlviertel with 2171 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the heart of the Mühlviertler Alm. The municipality is in the judicial district of Freistadt .

geography

Unterweißbach lies at an altitude of 640 m in the Mühlviertel. The extension is from north to south 10.5 km, from west to east 11.7 km. The total area is 48.6 km². 51.9% of the area is forested, 22% of the area is used for agriculture.

history

In the 11th century , the Lords of Machland acquired a property between the Große and Kleine Naarn and began to clear the forest and set up Ruttenstein Castle . In a deed of donation from 1209, "Wizzenbach" is mentioned for the first time, a place founded in this cleared area. The clearing settlement later became a market, around 1331 a judge is documented. In the 14th century Wizzenbach was referred to as a Free Aigen and no fiefdom was affected . In 1449 the Wallseer Urbar recorded 42 town houses.

Since 1490 it was assigned to the principality "Austria ob der Enns" and belonged to the rule Ruttenstein. In 1497 Weißenbach is mentioned in a list of the ban markets , a de facto equality with the princely cities. In 1571, Emperor Maximilian II decreed new borders, at that time Weißenbach extended to Kamp in what is now Lower Austria. In 1757 the parish of Liebenau was separated and in 1785 that of the parish of Kaltenberg.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 Unterweißbach was in the Soviet occupation zone and after 1955 the infrastructure was expanded.

The community was the seat of the Unterweißbach judicial district until the end of 2002 and was assigned to the Freistadt judicial district on January 1, 2003 .

In July 2020, a treasure was discovered with 1500 silver coins from the 15th century.

Development and structure

In 1869, 2,147 people lived in the municipality. The highest growth was recorded between 1951 and 1981, in 1981 the highest level in history was recorded with 2501 residents. In 1991 the community had 2,465 inhabitants, at the 2001 census only 2,299, which corresponds to a decrease of 6.7%.

In the 2001 census, the proportion of residents who were 60 years of age or older was 19.7%; 18.5% were under 15 years old. The proportion of the female population was 50.7%.

Of the 1,874 residents of Unterweißbach, who were over 15 years old in 2001, 2.8% had completed a university , technical college or academy . Another 5% had completed a high school diploma, 42.1% had completed an apprenticeship or a vocational middle school and 50.1% of all Unterweißbachers had compulsory school as the highest qualification.

Origin and language

The German dialect, which is commonly spoken in the Unterweißbach area and in Upper Austria, is Middle Bavarian . In 2001, 99.6% of Unterweißbachers stated German as a colloquial language. Another 0.1% spoke mainly Czech , the rest spoke other languages.

The proportion of Unterweißbachers with foreign citizenship was 0.5% in 2001, well below the average in Upper Austria. While 0.2% of those Weißenbacher population had citizenship in Germany and 0.3% were citizens of other countries. In 2001, around 1% of Unterweißbachers were born in a country other than Austria.

politics

The municipal council and mayoral elections take place every six years, at the same time as the state elections. Since 1945 the ÖVP has always achieved an absolute majority. The second strongest party was usually the SPÖ . The FPÖ was usually the third largest party in the elections. In 2003 the ÖVP became the party with the strongest vote with 68.1% of the votes.

In 2009 the ÖVP succeeded in expanding its absolute majority to 81.2%. The FPÖ did not run for this election.

The municipal council consists of 25 members. The last municipal council elections brought the following results:

Mayor of the community is Johannes Hinterreither-Kern from the ÖVP. The next municipal council election will be held in 2021.

Unterweißbach is a member of the Association for Regional and Tourism Development Mühlviertler Alm .

coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms shows a silver, diagonal wave bar in green. This shows in a simplified representation the old place name Wizzenbach , which was mentioned as early as 1209 in a document for the Baumgartenberg monastery . The municipality colors are: green-white.

The time of the award of the municipal coat of arms is not known. The first evidence of the coat of arms is a seal with the legend S. MARKET. BEISEN. PACH on a file from 1677. The community colors were approved on September 8, 1980.

Buildings

• The parish church of St. Nicholas with parts of the originally Romanesque church from 1334 was expanded to a remarkable late Gothic church at the beginning of the 16th century. The vault design in the nave, named with Freistadt architecture around 1500/1510 , is analogous to the choir of the parish church St. Alexius in Hellmonsödt , the choir of the parish church Hirschbach im Mühlkreis and the choir of the parish church St. Leonhard in St. Leonhard near Freistadt . The late Gothic south portal from the beginning and first quarter of the 16th century is remarkably densely barred and round-arched and right-angled analogous to the type used in the parish church of St. John the Baptist trained in Bad Zell .

The Mühlviertler Alm Strasse L 576 and the Nordwaldkamm Landesstrasse L 579 intersect in Unterweißbach. Furthermore, the municipality is opened up by the Unterweißbacher Bezirksstrasse L 1442. The supraregional hiking and pilgrimage route Johannesweg leads through the municipality .

Public institutions and education

A kindergarten , an elementary school , a new middle school and a polytechnic school are available in the village . Two S-classes are connected to the elementary school. There is also a library in the Unterweißbach parish. There is also a general practitioner with a general practitioner and a district seniors' home in the community. A day care center from Lebenshilfe rounds off the community's social offerings.

In 2003 the district court was closed for reasons of economy. The police station was also closed . The next police station is in Königswiesen. The district administration of Freistadt operates a branch office and a notary is also in town.

The Mühlviertler Alm office, which handles both the regional and tourist tasks of the association, is also located in Unterweißbach.
