Ursula Boese
Ursula Boese (born July 27, 1928 in Hamburg ; † October 25, 2016 there ) was a German opera singer ( alto ). She was a long-time member of the Hamburg State Opera ensemble and Hamburg Chamber Singer .
Life
She studied at the Hamburg University of Music (graduated with a diploma) and began working as a concert altist while she was still in training in 1954. She had her first success as an interpreter of oratorios and passions (especially by Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel ).
In 1958 she made her stage debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Floßhilde and 2nd Norn in the Ring cycle under the direction of Hans Knappertsbusch . After that she worked in different roles every summer up to the new production of The Ring of the Nibelung by Wieland Wagner in 1965, where she appeared as Fricka in Rheingold and Walküre.
In 1960 she became a member of the Hamburg State Opera , where she sang until she retired in 1993.
She has made guest appearances at the London Covent Garden Opera , the Opera of Rome, Venice, Turin, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Opera Chicago , the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Vienna State Opera and the Grand Paris Opera . Boese sang at the Edinburgh Festival and the Holland Festival . She has made guest appearances with the Hamburg ensemble in Florence, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, at the Opéra de Montréal , at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg, in Moscow, in Tokyo and at La Scala in Milan .
She also took part in world premieres in Hamburg. In 1968 she sang Jocaste in a performance of Stravinsky's ' Oedipus Rex ' in San Francisco in the presence of the composer, in 1969 as partner of the prima donna Joan Sutherland in ' Giulio Cesare ' by Handel , and in 1970 she gave several Mahler concerts, conductor Zubin Mehta , in Israel. In 1973 she worked with Luciano Pavarotti and Sherrill Milnes as Ulrica in the new Hamburg production of the Masked Ball.
On May 21, 1969, she was awarded the title of Hamburger Kammersängerin . Rolf Liebermann gave her the certificate .
Ursula Boese married Gerhard Arnoldi on July 1, 1960 . The marriage remained childless and was divorced in February 1972.
