Vaulx is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Vaulx is at 540 m , about eleven kilometers west-northwest of the city of Annecy (beeline). The farming village extends in the northern Albanais , in a northern side valley of the Fier , in the hilly landscape that spreads between the valleys of Fier and Usses.
The area of the 19.19 km² municipal area includes a section of the Genevois . The southern border runs along the Fier, which emerges from a gorge-like cut valley (Gorges du Fier) into an open valley. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward into the adjacent undulating hilly landscape, which is drained to the Fier by several short streams in erosion valleys . There is a high plateau west of Vaulx. This is followed by hills that are partly covered with meadow and partly wooded in the north. At the height of Sallongy, Vaulx's highest point is reached at 712 m .
In addition to the actual town center, Vaulx also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Fond Dessous ( 440 m ) on the valley slope north of the Fier
- Bellossy ( 500 m ) on the edge of the high plateau north of the Fier
- Contamine ( 485 m ) on the edge of the high plateau north of the Fier
- Lagnat ( 510 m ) on the high plateau north of the Fier
- Mornaz ( 550 m ) on a ledge east of the village
- Le Biolley ( 580 m )
- Frênes Dessous ( 620 m ) on a saddle north of the village
Neighboring communities of Vaulx are Thusy and Sillingy in the north, Nonglard and Lovagny in the east, Étercy in the south and Hauteville-sur-Fier and Saint-Eusèbe in the west.
history
Since the 12th century, Vaulx belonged to the Saint-Victor priory in Geneva. The official spelling Veaux was used until 1872 . The place name goes back to the old French word vaul (valley).
Attractions
The village church was built in 1899 in the neo-Gothic style. In several hamlets there are chapels, namely Notre-Dame de la Conception (from 1848) in Le Biolley, Mère de Dieu (from 1860) in Frênes Dessous and Immaculée-Conception (from 1851) in Fond Dessous. There are also various manor houses in the municipality, including the Maison forte von Frênes Dessous, which was built in the 15th century and remodeled in 1810. The Jardins Secrets von Vaulx, a mosaic of gardens of different styles on an area of around 7000 m², are a special attraction .

With 978 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Vaulx is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 958 inhabitants in Vaulx). Since the mid-1970s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded.
Economy and Infrastructure
Vaulx is still a predominantly agricultural village today . There are also some local small businesses. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the D14 department road, which runs from Annecy to Seyssel . There are other road connections with Saint-Eusèbe and Sillingy. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 13 km away.
