Waldemar Ludwig Eugen Staegemann (born July 21, 1879 in Bad Neuhäuser near Koenigsberg ; † February 11, 1958 in Hamburg ) was a German actor , opera singer (baritone), radio play speaker and singing teacher .

Life

The son of the general manager of the Leipzig city ​​theater , Max Staegemann , and his wife, the violinist Hildegard Kirchner, attended the royal high school in Leipzig together with his brother Max , which he left at Easter 1897 with the school leaving certificate. Before he embarked on a stage career, he studied law at the universities of Königsberg , Freiburg and Leipzig at the request of his father . Because of his dissertation on the subject of the testimony of the shop assistants (§ 73 HGB) , he was in 1903 by the Law Faculty of the University of Leipzig doctorate .

From 1902 to 1912 he worked as an actor in the youthful hero subject at the Königliches Schauspielhaus in Berlin , where he quickly became a crowd favorite. At the Art Theater he was Ulysses partner of Tilla Durieux in Calderóns Circe . Despite his success as a theater actor, he was driven to music theater .

After completing his vocal training , he made his debut as a baritone at the Dresden Court Opera in 1912 , where he soon enjoyed great success as a celebrated Mozart singer . He was a member of the Dresden ensemble until 1936. Among other things, he took over the role of the emperor in the first performance of Giacomo Puccini's Turandot in 1926 . Guest appearances have taken him to the world's great opera houses, including the London Royal Opera House and the Paris Opera . He was also in great demand as a concert and oratorio singer .

From 1926 he also worked as a director and senior director in Dresden . On October 3, 1930, under his direction - and with Fritz Busch as musical director - the world premiere of Othmar Schoeck's Vom Fischer un syner Fru took place at the Dresden State Opera, and before that, on January 8, 1927, his Penthesilea (opera) after Heinrich von Kleist under the direction of Hermann Kutzschbach . Likewise, on September 29, 1932, Staegemann directed the world premiere of Mr. Wu , the last opera by Eugen d'Albert .

In 1939 he took his leave from the stage. From 1940 Staegemann took over the vocal training at the Musikhochschule Berlin and from 1945 he worked as a singing and acting teacher in Hamburg. During these years he also took part in several television and radio play productions.

Staegemann was also active as a writer. He mainly published poems, mostly in the Saxon dialect.

Waldemar Staegemann and his sister, the soprano Helene Staegemann (1877-1923), who later married the composer Botho Sigwart zu Eulenburg , were the last Staegemanns to embark on a stage career as descendants of the Devrient theater family .
