action
Since the US war in Afghanistan does not go as planned, the previous military commander is dismissed and replaced by the four-star General Glen McMahon. The general is sent to Afghanistan to successfully end the war. He is responsible for the American armed forces and those of the international coalition. To get an idea of the military measures to be taken to win the war, he visits Afghan President Hamid Karzai and roams the country. General McMahon quickly realizes that US efforts to train the local population and establish democracy are not very successful.
Although his political patrons persuade him not to ask for additional troops, General McMahon decides to take the Helmand province , which is considered impregnable, and requests 40,000 additional troops. By taking Helmand and then Kandahar , he wants to win the trust of the local population. President Barack Obama only releases 30,000 soldiers instead of the 40,000 requested and in a press conference he announced that his army would withdraw from Afghanistan within 18 months. Therefore, McMahon has to travel through Europe with his staff and a journalist from Rolling Stone in order to receive additional troops from the coalition partners.
In Europe he is questioned by critical politicians. A key moment in General McMahon's self-discovery story is his appearance in Berlin in front of German politicians, to whom he canvassed to send more soldiers. Since air traffic in Europe is hampered after the volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull , the general's staff and the journalist spend a lot of time in Europe drinking. The reporter then reveals how derogatory the general and his staff were about the political leadership.
General McMahon receives the additional troops from Europe. After the disappointing invasion of Helmand Province, the general is dismissed and replaced by a new military commander named Bob White.

criticism
The film received rather negative reviews from critics. Zeit Online described the film as an "unsuccessful war satire" and particularly criticized Brad Pitt's acting. Its performance was described as "awkward and overly charged".
Even Spiegel Online concurred with this criticism and still was, "written and directed not go quite so all the stops as Pitt for his performance. Michod's film often seems at a loss when faced with the complex issues, changes the tone several times from shrill satire to soulful drama, gets lost in secondary threads. More dramatic focus on the essentials would have done War Machine good. "
