history

The Stephanuskirche was built in the 11th century. The place was first mentioned in 1358 as "Wasserzell". The place name means to the monastery courtyard by the water . Places that end in -zell are almost always foundations that started out from a monastery. Only the St. Salvator Monastery in Spalt comes into question for Wasserzell. Since this monastery was dissolved no later than 1037, it can be assumed that the place was founded before that. As a rule, these cells are farmhouses; it may have been a fishery here.

In 1366 the Nuremberg patrician Berthold Holzschuher sold the slopes of four properties, including a mill, to the Heilsbronn monastery .

In the books of the Spalter Canon Monastery of St. Nikolaus from 1460, 1517 and 1549 three properties were listed for Wasserzell, in 1619 there were a Wittum and a property. In 1529 four subject families were subordinate to the Hauptmannschaft Enderndorf of the imperial city of Nuremberg . The Hochstift Eichstätt only acquired a Gütlein in 1615. In the Thirty Years War the church and the cemetery were destroyed. The latter was not rebuilt after that, the church only in 1658.

In 1671 there were eleven properties in Wasserzell with the Egelmühle . The landlords were the Eichstatt caste office Spalt (2), the collegiate monasteries St. Emmeram and St. Nikolaus (3), the Brandenburg-Ansbach administration office Merkendorf (3) and the state charity office of the imperial city of Nuremberg (3).

At the end of the 18th century there were ten properties in Wasserzell. The high court was exercised by the Wernfels-Spalt administration office in Eichstatt . The caste office Spalt held the village and community rulership. The landlords were the Hochstift Eichstätt (Kastenamt Spalt: 1 Halbhof; Kollegiatstift St. Emmeram and St. Nikolaus: 2 Halbhöfe, 1 Köblergut ), the Merkendorf administrator's office (1 estate with grinding mill, 1 Gütlein), the Trisoleiamt Ellingen of the Teutonic Order (1 Gütlein ) and the state charity office of the imperial city of Nuremberg (1 half yard, 2 Gütlein). In addition to the property, there was the branch church and the shepherd's house as a communal building.

As part of the municipal edict, Wasserzell was assigned to the Großweingarten tax district formed in 1808 . It also belonged to the rural community Großweingarten founded in 1811 .

From 1892 to 1922, Wasserzell had a stop on the Georgensgmünd – Spalt railway line .

On January 1, 1972, Wasserzell was incorporated into Spalt as part of the regional reform in Bavaria . In the 1990s, a little separated from the old town, the Wasserzell / Ost residential area with 60 building sites was built.
