history

The first settlements are lost in the gray of the past. As the finds and burial mounds document, worlds may have been inhabited as early as the Roman times. Welten was first mentioned in a document in 1256.

On June 8, 1867, the unified imperial state Austria-Hungary was politically divided into the independent halves of Austria and Hungary . Like all of Burgenland, Welten belonged to the Hungarian half of the empire (Transleithanien) , region of German-West Hungary, until 1921 . Actually mostly German-speaking, the Hungarian place name Velike had to be used due to the Magyarization policy from 1898 . After the end of the First World War , the municipality was awarded to Austria in 1919 according to the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon .

As a result of the annexation to the German Reich , Burgenland was dissolved in 1938. Until 1945, Welten belonged to the Feldbach district , Gau Steiermark . In April 2016, a mass grave of up to 30 members of the Red Army from the Second World War was uncovered in a forest near Welten . It contained bones, documents and explosive war material. The excavation and exhumation were precisely documented.

With effect from January 1, 1971, due to the community structure reform law , the formerly independent municipality worlds joined together with the equally independent communities Gritsch, Doiber, Neumarkt and Oberdrosen with the community of St. Martin an der Raab.
