When the rooster crows
Wenn der Hahn kräht is a German comedy in three acts by August Hinrichs from 1933. The play had its premiere on September 27, 1933 at the German National Theater in Weimar .
action
The mayor Jan Kreyenborg tries to window the daughter of the master tailor Witt. He is caught but not recognized. At the cock crow he comes home with only one boot and an injury to his buttocks. The servant Wilhelm helps him to cover up his deed. The tailor's wife tries to capitalize on the fact, claiming they were robbed. Gustav Piepers, who the mother intended to be the spouse for the daughter Lena, calls the police by phone. The boot is seen as an indication of the perpetrator. The veterinarian, Renken, tracks down the mayor's act and demands that he consent to the engagement with his daughter in order to keep quiet.
Remarks
The piece, which is located in the Lower German area, was taken over by the North German broadcasters, including the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation , and broadcast on radio and television. The plot was shifted to Bavarian, and the characters were given names that better fit the local image. For example, Mayor Jan Kreyenborg became Severin Bachmeier and his servant Wilhelm “Willem” Tameling became Simon “Simmerl” Gramlinger.
The ARD radio play database contains the following text on the radio play Wenn de Hahn kreiht from 1977: The Oldenburg playwright August Hinrichs (1879 to 1956) is neither one of the "classics" nor one of the "trailblazers" of the Low German theater, but if one wanted to compile a list of the most successful Low German playwrights, his name would be at the top by a long way before any other. In the twenties and thirties he was one of the most played playwrights; his plays were played all over Germany and abroad, and even the film took on his works (" Krach um Jolanthe "). Even today his comedies - whether they are presented in the Low German language on the stage or in " Missingsch " on the screen - are still very popular. August Hinrichs owes this success, which has now lasted for several decades, above all to his craftsmanship and his unerring instinct for comic material. His comedy "Wenn de Hahn kreiht" proves that he occasionally resorted to literary sources and was able to transpose them into Low German with great skill. The parallels to Kleist's “ Broken Jug ” are unmistakable - even if the village judge Adam confronts us in the figure of the cunning mayor Jan Kreyenborg.
