Wildbad is a district of the large district town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the district of Ansbach in Middle Franconia . The name comes from the large-scale former Wildbad health resort, which is now used as a conference venue by the Protestant regional church of Bavaria .

geography

The former wasteland , today house number 42 on the Taubertalweg, is located south of the hospital district in the old town of Rothenburg in the deeply cut valley of the Tauber on the right bank of the river, between the gypsum mill on the same side and the Schwabenmühle on the opposite. A side branch of the Taubertalweg leads to State Road 1022 or State Road 2268 .

history

In 1356, after an earthquake, a spring rises below the hospital. During the tenure of Rothenburg's mayor Heinrich Toppler , the city built the Wildbad there because this spring was found to be medicinal.

In 1601 the chemist and Rothenburg city physicist Andreas Libavius wrote about the Fons Medikatus , the Rothenburg wild bath spring.

In 1820, the Rothenburg pharmacist Johann Michael Schiller carried out a detailed analysis of the healing water with the result that the healing effect is based on the addition of alkaline sulfur compounds.

At the end of the 19th century, the inventor and inventor of the orthopedic prosthesis, Friedrich Hessing , who owned a very well-known orthopedic sanatorium in Göggingen near Augsburg , had the magnificent building complex, which is almost unchanged today, built in nine years. The design comes from the architect Hessings, the Augsburg resident Jean Keller , who also made the plans for the extensive Göggingen institution building .

On June 1, 1903, the "Wildbadetablissement" and spa hotel, modeled on the English pleasure gardens, opened its business, but it had to be closed for financial reasons in 1917, a year before Hessing's death.

In 1925 the Wildbad was foreclosed and the regional association of Bavarian local health insurance funds acquired the property. During the Second World War , the house was used as a hospital, children's home, Hitler Youth school and US camp. It then served as a camp for displaced people from the Baltic States .

Between 1951 and 1976 the Bavarian riot police rented the Wildbad and converted it into a training center. In 1977 the Society for Transcendental Meditation established the residence of the Age of Enlightenment here . At the end of the year she moved into the unrenovated Wildbad and hosted a first conference at the turn of the year 1977/78.

As a result, the city of Rothenburg made use of its right of first refusal in February 1978. She bought the property for 300,000 DM from the legal successor of the Reich Association of Local Health Insurance Funds and left it to the Diakoniewerk Neuendettelsau for the same price . In 1981, the Wildbad sponsoring association was founded, in which the Protestant regional church, the Neuendettelsau Diakoniewerk and eight West Central Franconian deaneries joined forces to renovate and expand the Wildbad into a conference venue. After a partial expansion, the conference could be started in 1983. The renovation was completed in 1990. As a state church institution, the Wildbad was placed under the direct management of the Munich State Church Office . The sponsoring association was converted into an advisory board.
