Oleschky

Oleschky ( Ukrainian Олешки ; Russian Алёшки Aljoschki ) is a city in the southern Ukrainian Oblast of Kherson with 24,800 inhabitants (2017). It is located on the left bank of the Konka , an estuary of the Dnieper , 20 km from the center of Kherson Oblast . Oleschky is the administrative center of the raion of the same name . The urban area also includes the village of Sahy (Ukrainian Саги ) and the settlement Pojma (Ukrainian Пойма ).

history

The city goes back to a Cossack settlement , the Oleschkiwska Sitsch ( Ukrainian Олешківська Січ ), which was first mentioned in 1711. Later it was called Олешки / Oleschky (Ukrainian) or Russian Алёшки / Aljoschki , in 1876 the place received city rights for the first time. By 1897 the city had grown to 8,999 inhabitants, including 69.44% Russians, 21.68% Ukrainians, 8.19% Jews, 0.33% Poles, 0.17% Tatars and 0.1% Germans. In the first half of the 20th century, the city's development was severely hampered by the Russian Civil War , the 1932/33 famine and the Second World War . In 1928 it was renamed Zjurupynsk / Zjurupinsk (Ukrainian Цюрупинськ / Russian Цюрупинск) in honor of the Soviet politician Alexander Zjurupa , who was born in this settlement . By 1956 the place had only grown to 11,700 inhabitants. After the place had lost its city status in the meantime, it was awarded again in 1959. In the following decades the city grew rapidly, so that in 2007 31,100 inhabitants lived in it, 82% of them Ukrainians. On May 19, 2016 the place was renamed back to its old name Oleschky in the course of the decommunization of Ukraine .

Economy and Transport

The place is on the European route 97 between Cherson and Simferopol on the Crimean peninsula, which crosses the Dnieper north of Oleschky.
