This is a list of number of professional wrestling championships that Pro Wrestling Illustrated recognizes as having "World Heavyweight Title" status. There is no ultimate source that declares which of the various wrestling promotions top championships have that status and views differ from promotion to promotion. The same happens with PWI. Hence this page is not supposed to represent the official view on which titles have world title status, it just represents PWI's point of view.

Declaration of World Title Status

Pro Wrestling Illustrated has granted world title status to the following promotions: National Wrestling Alliance, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, World Wrestling Entertainment (and its previous names), American Wrestling Association (now defunct, and not to be confused with post-1991 versions of the AWA), Extreme Championship Wrestling (now defunct, and not to be confused with the WWE version of ECW) and World Championship Wrestling (now defunct). PWI currently recognizes two world championships in the WWE and differentiates them as the WWE Raw World Championship (currently the WWE Championship) and the WWE SmackDown! World Championship (currently the World Heavyweight Championship). Also the ECW Championship is currently only given world title status from 1999 to 2001 and the NWA Championship from 1948 to 1991 and again from 2002.

Footnotes

a Only recognized by WWE (and perhaps himself) as a 16-time world champion (8-time NWA Champion, 6-time WCW Champion, and 2-time WWE Champion). It should be noted that WWE recognizes Flair's 10th reign in 1993, unlike PWI, not recognizing one of his reigns from the 80's, like PWI does. His 8th NWA reign and 1st WCW reign are considered by the WWE as one single reign.
