The ECW Championship (in German ECW Championship ) was one of the most important wrestling titles of WWE and was awarded to individual wrestlers of the ECW roster . The title, also known as the ECW World Heavyweight Championship , was introduced in April 1992 and originally belonged to the National Wrestling Alliance's wrestling promotion NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling , later Extreme Championship Wrestling . In June 2006 the title was reactivated by the WWE. On February 16, 2010, the title was finally discontinued because the wrestling show ECW was no longer produced. As is common in wrestling, the award was made according to a previously determined storyline .
history
The ECW Championship had its origins in the NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling Heavyweight Championship . Eastern Championship Wrestling was then a member of the National Wrestling Alliance . In August 1994, Eastern Championship Wrestling taught in Philadelphia a tournament titled Walk over the line ( dt. Cross the bridge ) for the vacant NWA World Heavyweight Championship from. On August 27, 1994, the then ECW title holder Shane Douglas also received the NWA World Heavyweight Championship as the winner of the tournament. But it came to a head when he did not accept the title as originally planned ( storyline ), but basically declared the NWA title as unimportant and rejected it. He declared himself the "ECW World Heavyweight Champion" and 1994 as the year of the ECW. At the end of the month, Eastern Championship Wrestling left the NWA and was renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling , whereupon the title was officially renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship . The title remained active until the ECW closed on April 11, 2001.
After World Wrestling Entertainment decided to revive the ECW as its own brand ( Roster ECW ) on June 13, 2006 , the former ECW heavyweight title was also reactivated and passed on to Rob Van Dam by the previous owner Paul Heyman as a reward for winning the WWE Championship handed over.
