History
Vis was inhabited by the time of the Neolithic period. In the 4th century B.C., the tyrant of Siracuse, Dionisius the Older, founded the colony Issa on the island. Later, it became an independent city-state, and even minted its own money and founded its own colonies elsewhere. In the first century B.C., the island was held by the Liburnians, a Venetic tribe.Queen Teuta originated from the island.
On April 13, 2008, Justin recorded his first ARCA RE/MAX Series victory of the 2008 season at the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 by Federated Auto Parts race at Salem Speedway in Salem, Indiana.
On June 29, 2008 Allgaier won the inaugural ARCA RE/MAX race at the Cayuga Motor Speedway in Nelles Corners, Ontario, Canada and recorded his first superspeedway win at the Pocono Raceway on August 2, 2008.

A part of the Byzantine Theme of Dalmatia, in 925 Croatian Monarch Tomislav took over administration over the island of "Ies". After the death of Croatian ruler Kresimir, a war of succession erupted and the Narentines under Serbian Prince Časlav Klonimirović took the island by 948, however they managed to rule it for only a short period, as the Byzantines restored control. Brothers of Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja Miroslav and Stracimir made raids on Vis in 1184 and 1185.
On August 9, 2008 at the Toyota ARCA 150 race held at the Nashville Superspeedway, Justin drove the Venturini Motorsports/CJM Racing Carfax #16 in what was termed an "on-track audition." In an eventful race, which saw him spun out of the lead, Justin placed a respectable 8th, after falling to 16th as a result of the spin. Justin returned to the the Allgaier Motorsports #16 the following week.

In the Middle Ages it often changed rulers, and then for a long time it was under Venice, which founded the main settlement, named Velo Selo. During Venetian and Austrian domination, the island's official name was Lissa.
Justin won a POWRi midget feature at his "home track," Macon Speedway on August 16, 2008. He followed that up 2 days later, August 17, 2008 with a 6th place finish in the Allen Crowe Memorial 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

Later, the larger settlements also developed on the coast (Komiza and Luka of St. Juraj, the- present town of Vis). Administratively the island of Vis was for centuries bound to the island of Hvar.
On August 30th, at the Southern Illinois State Fair, Justin scored a win in his USAC midget. The next day, September 1, 2008, Justin finished a disappointing 16th in the ARCA RE/MAX Series Southern Illinois 100.

The sea to the north of the island was the stage of two battles:
On September 28, 2008, Justin won the inaugural Loud Energy Drink 150 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey. He followed that up with a win the next week, October 3, 2008 with another victory at Talladega Superspeedway in the Food World 250. The back-to-back wins were his 4th and 5th ARCA RE/MAX Series victories of the year, and his first career road course and restrictor plate wins. The Talladega victory was also Allgaier's first in a Dodge, and was powered by a Penske Racing Dodge engine. As of that point in the season, Justin had a series-leading 5 wins, and was 3rd in points, 105 points behind points leader, Scott Speed.
*on 13 March 1811, a small Royal Navy fleet, under the command of Captain William Hoste, defeated a larger Franco-Venetian fleet (see Battle of Lissa (1811));
*on 20 July 1866, the Austrian fleet, under Admiral Tegetthoff, attacked the Italian fleet, under Admiral Persano, sinking the battleship Re d'Italia (see Battle of Lissa (1866)).

During World War II, Vis was at one point the main hideout of Josip Broz Tito, the leader of the Yugoslav resistance movement. After the war, the Yugoslav People's Army used the island as one of its main naval bases. After Croatia became independent, its navy did not reclaim most of the facilities, and the many abandoned buildings are being used for civilian purposes, including modern happenings.
On October 10, 2008 Justin attempted to qualify the Penske Racing-owned, Penske Truck Rental Dodge #12 for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 at Lowes Motor Speedway. He qualified 14th with a time of 30.041 seconds, and a speed of 179.754 mph.

Vis [ˈʋiːs] (Greek : Issa), is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, the furthest inhabited island. Its area is 90.26 km²,[1] and it has a population of 3,617 (as of 2001).[2] The highest peak of Vis is called Hum, 587 m high.[1]

There are two towns and municipalities on the island, Vis (1,960 [3] inhabitants in the municipality) and Komiža (1,677 [4], both located on the seacoast. There are smaller settlements on the island's interior: Podselje, Marinje zemlje, Podšpilje, and Podstražje.[5]

Economy

Main industries on the island are agriculture (mainly viticulture), fishing, fish refinement and tourism.[1]

Around 20% of arable land on the island is covered with vineyards. Autochthonous vine species cultivated on the island are Plavac Mali, Kurteloška and Bugava.[7]
