Čavoj (until 1927 Slovak "Čávoj"; German Sauershau , Hungarian Csavajó - until 1900 Csávoj ) is a municipality in the west-center of Slovakia with 491 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Prievidza , part of the Trenčiansky kraj , heard.
geography
The village is located in the Strážovské vrchy Mountains in the catchment area of the Nitrica . The center of the village is at an altitude of 534 m nm and is 30 kilometers from Prievidza .
Neighboring municipalities are Valaská Belá in the north, Nitrianske Pravno in the south, Nevidzany and Temeš in the south and again Valaská Belá in the west.
history
Čavoj was first mentioned in writing as Chawoy in 1364 and was then owned by the Bossányi family . Because of the gold mining that took place here, the place and the mines were repeatedly the subject of legal disputes between various landlords. Gold mining lasted until the 17th century. When the Rudnay family ruled the place around the middle of the 17th century, attempts were made to mine lead, but with moderate results. From the 18th century there were only a few attempts to start mining again. The last landowners came from the Hellenbach family. In 1828 there were 110 houses and 772 residents, who at that time were employed as glassmakers, basket makers and weavers, among others.
Until 1918, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 528 residents in Čavoj, including 507 Slovaks and one Czech . 20 residents gave no information on ethnicity .
471 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Greek Catholic Church and the New Apostolic Church. 27 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 28 residents was not determined.
