Attard is a city in Malta . Attard is located in the Western district on the western edge of the urban agglomeration around Valletta , 2 km east-southeast of Birkirkara and 4 km from the old capital Mdina . So the place is roughly in the middle of the island.
The city, named after the builder of the Wignacourt aqueduct Giovanni Attard, is the seat of the President of Malta as well as the American, Tunisian and Chinese embassies, the New Zealand consul general and the papal nuncio .
The Valletta – Mdina railway, which was in operation from 1883 to 1931 , also ran through Attard and had a train station here.
Urban development
Due to its location at the transition from the urbanized to the rural area of Malta, Attard has developed into a preferred place of residence since the 1980s. Until then it was the smallest of the “three villages” Attard, Lija and Balzan, which are very close to one another; today it is the third largest of the ten towns in the Western District. Therefore, the place was raised in 1994 to a regional body with its own administration, a municipality.
economy
The comparatively fertile surrounding area is largely used for agriculture. Attard is therefore the location of the Maltese vegetable wholesale market. Since Attard used to be a village, industrialization is limited to a few small factories. The local economy today is shaped by the tertiary sector , especially tourism and private clinics. Attard is the seat of the Malta Financial Services Authority .
politics
After the municipal elections in 2015, five of the nine seats on the council will be taken by the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), four by the Partit Laburista (PL) and one by the Alternattiva Demokratieika (AL). The diagram on the right shows the distribution of the votes.
Attractions
Due to its central location, Attard has been a popular location for the country estates of the Knights of the Order of Malta since the early seventeenth century . The Sant 'Anton Palace , built by Antoine de Paule in 1623, was originally the seat of the Grand Master of the Order, later the English Governor and, since 1974, the President of Malta. Part of the palace gardens with numerous tropical trees has been open to the public since 1882. The Marija parish church is one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Malta because of its elaborate sculptural decoration . In Attard, part of the aqueduct , built from 1615 onwards , which Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt had built to supply the capital Valletta with water from the highlands around Mdina, has been preserved.
Sports
The Ta 'Qali Stadium , which serves as the Maltese national stadium , is located in Attard .
