(Everything I Do) I Do It for You (English for: "(Everything I do) I do it for you") is a rock ballad by Bryan Adams (a Canadian rock singer), Robert John "Mutt" Lange and Michael Kamen , which was released as a single in June 1991.
background
The song was written by Adams, Lange and Kamen for the 1991 film Robin Hood: The King of Thieves .
As a single release, the song was a number one hit in the US , UK , Germany , Austria , Switzerland , the Netherlands and a few other countries.
In Great Britain it holds the record as the single with 16 weeks (from July 13th to November 1st 1991) the longest in a row at number one position. ( Frankie Laines I Believe was number one for 18 weeks in 1953, but was replaced twice by other songs during this time.) In the USA, too, with seven weeks at number one, she was at the top of the charts longer than the average. In Canada , the song managed to hold its own for nine weeks in the top position. Overall, the song was number one in 30 states. As the best-selling single of 1991, it is still one of the single bestsellers with the highest sales figures.
(Everything I Do) I Do It for You was awarded a Grammy in 1992 for "Best Song Written Especially for Film or Television" . He was also nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for " Best Song ".
The song is featured on Adams' album Waking Up the Neighbors .
Cover versions
Shortly after the great success of the original, the rock band The Fatima Mansions recorded a version for a benefit album. The song was also released on a split single, the other song on the single was a recording of the score for M * A * S * H ("Suicide Is Painless") by the Manic Street Preachers . Although this song was clearly the more popular, it was how Fatima Mansions got their only top 10 placement in the UK.
In 1994, music producer Mark Taylor aka Q recorded a dance version of the song with Tony Jackson from the 1970s band Sweet Dreams , which hit the UK charts in March of that year.
In 1998, the American R&B singer Brandy released a cover version of the song on her album Never Say Never . The song was released there instead of the title U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To) (North America and British Isles) and Never Say Never (continental Europe). It is the eighth single from the studio album. The 1999 live album VH1 Divas also features a version with country singer Faith Hill .
The title rose to number 33 on November 21 as a result of the broadcast of the live concert VH1 Divas '99 there in the New Zealand single charts and climbed to the highest position number 28 the following week. The song stayed in the top 50 for three more weeks the charts.
