.5: The Gray Chapter is the fifth official studio album of American Metal - band Slipknot . It was released on October 17, 2014 in Germany on Roadrunner Records and from September 21 on worldwide. It followed 6 years after All Hope Is Gone and is the first album after the death of Paul Gray and the ousting of Joey Jordison .

Emergence

After the death of Paul Gray, the band took a long hiatus. In interviews, the remaining band members announced that they would continue the band. From the end of 2013 the band wrote the first lyrics for a new album, guitarist Jim Root interrupted the tour with Stone Sour . On February 27, 2014, the band stopped all social media activities for no reason.

From July 15, 2014, Slipknot published small teasers for two weeks, which finally revealed the title of The Negative One . The song was released on August 1, 2014, and the accompanying video, directed by Shawn Crahan , on August 5.

On August 13th, the band unveiled the cover art for their promo single The Devil in I , which was released on August 24th. In the accompanying music video, Alessandro "Vman" Venturella was revealed as the new bass player based on his tattoos on his hands. On October 10th, another song from the album was released as a third single with Custer.

Slipknot begins its world tour headlining Knotfest on October 25, 2014 with Anthrax , Five Finger Death Punch , Otep and Black Label Society . After that, the band plans to co-headline the Prepare for Hell tour of North America with KoЯn and King 810 .

Album title

The .5: indicates that it is the band's fifth studio album. The rest of the album title The Gray Chapter can be interpreted in a number of ways:

1. The (Paul) Gray Chapter = based on the late Paul Gray, who was a founding member and bassist of the band until his death on May 24, 2010.
2. The Gray Chapter ( English , ' The gray chapter '). In addition to Gray's death, drummer Joey Jordison also left the band in December 2013. There were also arguments between Corey Taylor and James Root, since Root had been kicked out of the band Stone Sour by Taylor .

Music genre

Stylistically, it does not continue the musical path of its predecessor All Hope Is Gone . Corey Taylor said they are going back to the roots of Iowa with The Gray Chapter (2001) and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) (2004). In an interview with Pop Culture Madness, he said that the songs contain the fabulous sound and artistic direction of Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) but retain the "brutality" of Iowa .

In Switzerland , Australia and the United States , the album reached number 1 in the album charts. In Germany , Austria , New Zealand and the United Kingdom , the album landed at number two. In Sweden has .5: The Gray Chapter third. In Finland (4th place) and Portugal (9th) the album reached a placement in the top ten. The album reached number 13 in the Dutch and Belgian charts ( Flanders ) , while .5: The Gray Chapter entered Wallonia at number 23.

The music magazine Billboard estimated that the album had sold over 100,000 times in the United States within the first week . According to the Metal by Numbers column , .5: The Gray Chapter even sold around 130,000 times in the first week of sales in the United States . Within four weeks, the album sold almost 200,000 copies in the United States alone.

At the 2016 Grammy Awards , .5: The Gray Chapter was nominated for Best Rock Album , but lost to Drones by Muse .

Lothar Gerber from Metal Hammer magazine was fascinated by the sound of .5: The Gray Chapter :

“Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the album is the sound of the drum kit: The drum beats roar out of the speakers as sharp, extremely precise and powerful. If you didn't know that Joey Jordison was kicked out of the band, you wouldn't miss him. Whoever the new man behind the shooting gallery is - he's doing a hell of a job! "

Ronny Bittner from Rock Hard magazine also described the kicking out of Jordison as the right decision, the percussions as well as the samples and scratches now come out better.

The Revolver magazine gave the album 4.5 out of 5.
