Behind the Moon Immediately Left (original title: 3rd Rock from the Sun ) is a 139-part US sitcom that was produced from 1996 to 2001.

Four extraterrestrials go on an excursion to earth and find themselves in the “mortal” and “fragile” bodies of humans . They should study the behavior and habits of the people on behalf of the head of their planet, the "large head carrier". In doing so, they have to deal with numerous problems. They find it difficult to find their way in everyday life. Again and again they get into crazy situations. Experiences with hormones, feelings, sensations and physical ailments do not make their job any easier.
The series targets the human species and their peculiarities, which are completely unknown to the extraterrestrial series heroes (despite theoretical preparation). The series thrives on the clash of two completely different cultures, which repeatedly results in bizarre situations.
main characters
Head of the mission is the High Commander Dr. Dick Solomon . It is in the body of a man around 50 who holds a chair in physics at the local Pendelton State University . Since the level of physical research on his home planet is much higher than on earth, he often gives his students unsolvable tasks. His “charm” and clumsy behavior put him in a lot of dilemma.
Sally is the Vice Commander of the Mission who, to his initial displeasure, finds himself in a female human body. Being a very attractive blonde, she quickly learns to use her good looks in every opportunity. She acts as a security officer. She later enters into a relationship with Police Officer Don Orville, where she finds his uniform particularly attractive.
Tommy is actually the oldest on the mission, but as a 14-year-old teenager he has to experience all facets of puberty. Otherwise the communications officer is the most intelligent of the troops. He falls in love with his teacher, whom he keeps asking if she doesn't want to be his wife. Tommy also has a girlfriend with whom he often argues because he either misunderstands or misapplies most of the rules of conduct on earth.
Harry is a man of around 25 who has a device in his head that enables contact between earth and home planet. He himself does not get these messages because he briefly falls into a trance with an existing connection. He's a huge The X-Files fan, although he dismissed most of the series' episodes as "a little too alien". He usually looks confused and silly, but he's a womanizer.
Dr. Mary Albright is a professor of anthropology and Dick's colleague at the university with whom he shares the office. She has a certain fascination for him and he tries to hook up with her. Mary and Dick soon developed a very deep friendship.
Recurring minor characters
- Nina Campbell (Simbi Khali, voice actress : Martina Treger ) is the assistant to Mary Albright and Dick Solomon. She is a rather cynical but lovable person nonetheless.
- Mamie Dubcek (Elmarie Wendel, voice actors: Hannelore Fabry , Luise Lunow ) is the friendly landlady of the Solomons. She rarely appears in the series, so her actress is usually featured as a guest star in the opening credits.
- Vicki Dubcek (Jan Hooks) is the landlady's daughter and becomes Harry's lover over the course of the series.
- August Leffler ( Shay Astar , voice actress : Ranja Bonalana ) is Tommy's first friend.
- Don Orville ( Wayne Knight , voice actor : Frank Ciazynski ), a corpulent cop, becomes Sally's boyfriend. He is very loyal to Sally and is madly in love with her. When Don wears his uniform he excites Sally, which becomes a running gag in later episodes . So it is also Don who deflowered Sally on earth. But there is no doubt that Don uses his police privileges to gain personal advantage. Don is part of the regular cast in later seasons.
- Alissa Strudwick ( Larisa Oleynik , voice actress : Dascha Lehmann ) is Tommy's second friend and the daughter of Dr. Strudwick.
- Dr. Strudwick (Ron West), is a physics professor and a competitor of Dick.
- Leon (Ian Lithgow, voice actor: Oliver Siebeck ), Bug ( David DeLuise , voice actor: Dennis Schmidt-Foß ), Pitman (Chris Hogan, voice actor: Rainer Fritzsche ) and Caryn (Danielle Nicolet, voice actress: Viktoria Voigt ) are four of the students, who sit in Dick's physics class year after year.
- The big head wearer (also “King of the Universe”, voice actor: Gerhard Paul ) is Dicks, Sally, Harry and Tommy's top boss. He is a conqueror who, according to Sally, Dick and Tommy, has subjugated numerous worlds (and by the way, according to the main characters, he is also said to have wiped out the dinosaurs on earth). He is portrayed in human form by William Shatner . It is later revealed that the big head wearer is also Dick's father and that Dick was the product of an affair with the big head wearer.

Trivia
- Almost all of the subsequent titles consist in the original of puns with the name "Dick" (from its meaning both an abbreviation for the name Richard - as well as a term for the penis).
- The original title 3rd Rock from the Sun is an allusion to the song "Third Stone From The Sun" by Jimi Hendrix .
- Almost all episodes end with all or some of the protagonists sitting on the roof of their house to reflect what happened in the episode.
