Adolf von Strümpell (born June 28, 1853 in Neu-Autz near Mitau , today Jaunauce , Latvia , † January 10, 1925 in Leipzig ) was a German internist and university professor.

Life

Adolf von Strümpell was the son of the philosopher Ludwig von Strümpell . He first studied philosophy and psychology at Charles University in Prague, but switched to studying medicine at Dorpat University . He finished his studies at the University of Leipzig , in 1875 as a Dr. med. after receiving his doctorate, he went to the Medical University Clinic headed by Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich as an assistant doctor . After his habilitation in 1883 , he was appointed associate professor in Leipzig, and in 1886 he received a full professorship at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen . In 1903 he moved to the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University , in 1909 to the University of Vienna and in 1910 back to the University of Leipzig. In 1915 he became rector of the University of Leipzig. From March 1923 he stayed with the sick Vladimir Ilyich Lenin in Moscow. With him, other well-known doctors were called to Lenin's bedside: Max Nonne from Hamburg, Oswald Bumke from Leipzig, Oskar Minkowski and Otfrid Foerster from Breslau and Solomon Henschen from Sweden. With Vladimir Bechterew and Pierre Marie , he first described ankylosing spondylitis . His textbook on Special Pathology and Therapy of Internal Diseases (2 volumes, Leipzig 1883/1884) appeared in more than 30 editions and has been translated into several languages.

Strümpell was married to Martha born in 1889 . Langerhans , daughter of the Imperial Court Councilor Wilhelm Langerhans . One of his daughters was the art historian Anna Klapheck .
