Countries participating in the Africa Cup 2012:
Countries qualified for the finals.
Countries eliminated in qualification.
Countries not participating.
Not a member of the CAF.
45 countries had registered their national teams for qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup . Djibouti , Eritrea , Lesotho , São Tomé and Príncipe , the Seychelles and Somalia did not send their teams. Despite the report, Mauritania did not take part in the qualification.
The drawing of the groups for the qualification took place on February 20, 2010 in Lubumbashi , Congolese . The qualification took place between July 2010 and October 2011.
Qualification for 2013
Contrary to initial plans, the CAF announced on July 19, 2010 that the teams that qualify for 2012 are not automatically qualified for the 2013 Africa Cup . Rather, the association announced a qualification mode in September 2010 that will take place separately from qualification for the 2014 World Cup .
particularities
Togo was excluded from the 2012 and 2013 Africa Cups due to a decision taken at the beginning of 2010 to withdraw from the Africa Cup in 2010 due to the terrorist attack on the team bus. Togo's urgent application to the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) to be admitted to the draw was rejected because the qualifying games did not start until autumn 2010. On May 14, 2010, however, the exclusion of Togo was withdrawn by the CAF. The Togolese national team was automatically assigned to qualifying group K.
The Nigerian national soccer team was withdrawn from all international tournaments by President Goodluck Jonathan for two years, starting on June 30, 2010. Shortly before the end of the FIFA ultimatum on July 5, 2010, the Nigerian President lifted his suspension for the national teams and the dissolution of the association.
Mauritania announced its withdrawal from qualifying on August 21, 2010.
mode
The 14 free places to take part in the 2012 Africa Cup were ultimately played by 44 teams in 11 groups. It was played within the groups according to the round-robin tournament system. If a team withdraws, only the games against the first and third of the group would be taken into account in the groups of four to determine the best runners-up. If a team had withdrawn from Group K, only the group winner would have qualified directly, the second only if he was one of the three best runners-up in the group. This case did not occur.
Due to the withdrawal of Mauritania and the fact that only three teams competed in Group F, the two best runners-up (without Group K) were only determined on the basis of their results against the first and third of their group. Games against the group fourth were therefore irrelevant for determining the best group runner-up.
qualification
Qualified for the Africa Cup 2012 are:
all group winners
the second in group K
the best two runners-up in the group without considering group K and without considering the results against the respective fourth in each group
