While the previous seasons appeared roughly annually from 1993 to 2002, the tenth season was released with a thirteen-year break.

history

After repeated speculation and discussion about a third film for the series, Chris Carter , David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson expressed their interest in a continuation of the series in January 2015. At the end of March 2015, Fox ordered a six-part mini-series, as had previously been the case with 24 . For this, the broadcaster was able to engage the two main actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as well as the series inventor Chris Carter. Likewise, the cast of director Skinner ( Mitch Pileggi ), the "Smoker" ( William B. Davis ) and agent Monica Reyes ( Annabeth Gish ) agreed to participate. Filming finally began on June 8, 2015 in Vancouver .

In a monologue at the beginning of the episode, Mulder shares his past and his work with Dana Scully on the X-Files. Flashback: In 1947 a man in black took a doctor to a UFO crash site in the New Mexico desert . There he finds an injured alien who is shot by the military. Back to the present: 14 years after the X-Files closed, Mulder is contacted by Scully on behalf of FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner. Skinner wants Mulder to meet with right-wing webcaster Tad O'Malley. Scully and Mulder meet in Washington, DC and drive from there with O'Malley to a remote farmhouse in Low Moor, Virginia . There you meet the young woman Sveta, who believes that she has been kidnapped by aliens and that she carries alien DNA . O'Malley and Mulder drive to a secret location where an Aurora plane made of alien technology is stored. Scully takes a blood sample from Sveta to examine her DNA. After O'Malley's account, Mulder doubts that work on the X-Files might not have been driven in the wrong direction for years. Mulder meets with the now-old New Mexico doctor and tells him that he believes extraterrestrial technology has long been used by human groups. He believes in a global conspiracy that could eventually turn against America or the world. The old doctor confirms to Mulder that he is close to the truth and that the Roswell incident was just a red herring. Mulder comes to the conclusion that it is not aliens who are the driving force behind the global conspiracy against humanity, but a group of "ultra-fascists" who have the alien technology and want to rule the world. O'Malley's website will go offline before he can reveal the truth. The aircraft made of alien technology is destroyed by men in military uniform and its builders are killed in the process. A UFO destroys Sveta's car, killing her. Scully reports to Mulder that Sveta actually had alien DNA. Scully, who has meanwhile tested herself, also has this DNA. For Mulder, Sveta is the key to uncovering the conspiracy. Both agents are called to see Skinner. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that the cancer candidate is still alive and learns over the phone that the X-Files have been reopened.

The scientist Dr. At his job at Nugenics Technology, Sanjay hears a mysterious high-pitched sound in his head. During a meeting, the sound becomes so strong that it storms out of the room, locks itself in the server room and begins to destroy data. He writes something in the palm of his hand and then rams a letter opener through his ear into his head. The X-Files are reopened and Mulder and Scully are investigating. The company is not cooperative and Mulder takes Sanjay's cell phone to investigate who he called. At a bar , Mulder meets a young man named Gupta, who was Sanjay's lover. During the autopsy , Scully discovers that Sanjay has written "Founder's Mutation" on the palm of his hand. The managing director of Nugenics, Dr. Augustus Goldman, is called "The Founder". While searching Sanjay's apartment, the agents find photos of disfigured children. Suddenly Mulder hears the high-pitched tone too, and he thinks he hears the message "Find her". Skinner tells agents that the case is being closed in order to appease the Department of Defense , which has ties to Goldman and Nugenics. The investigation continues unofficially. The surveillance videos show that a flock of birds gathered at Nugenics during Sanjay's death, and Mulder concludes that it is infrasound that humans cannot actually hear. Scully's Hospital also has ties to Goldman, and the agents suspect Nugenics is doing tests on pregnant women. A little later Scully has visions of her son William. The agents meet with Goldman, who explains to them that he is doing research on children with genetic defects. One of the patients, Molly, can move objects using telekinesis . The agents then speak to Jackie, Goldman's wife, who claims she is being held in a mental institution against her will. Experiments were also carried out on Jackie while she was pregnant. On further viewing the surveillance videos, Mulder and Scully discover that a building cleaner acted strangely when Sanjay took his own life on the floor directly below him. You drive to his house and meet his mother there. Mulder hears the shrill sound again, Scully sees the assembled birds, finds Kyle and forces him to stop transmitting the frequencies. Kyle testifies that he didn't want to kill Sanjay but wants to meet his sister, who is one of Goldman's test subjects. Goldman introduces Kyle to a girl he claims to be his sister, but Kyle notices the deception and finds his real sister, Molly. The siblings speak telepathically to each other and use their special abilities to kill Goldman, incapacitate the agents and flee.

A body is found with its throat ruptured in the Oregon forests , and three more bodies are found not far away the next morning. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen a strange creature . While Mulder and Scully are investigating a rest area with the animal catcher Pasha , they seem to come across this creature. The evidence begins to build up and Mulder suspects a man by the name of Guy Mann. He believes that Guy is a who-monster and - comparable to a werewolf - can transform into a lizard-like shape. When Mulder is able to put him in a cemetery, it turns out that his theory is not entirely correct: Guy is actually a lizard-like creature that temporarily transforms into a human. Guy became a shape shifter after being bitten by a human. He struggles with his life as a person in the consumer society. In the end, it turns out that Pasha is the real serial killer and Guy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mulder informs Guy of the result of the investigation. In return, he informs him that he now wants to go into hibernation for 10,000 years . But he was glad to have met Mulder. In front of Mulder's eyes, Guy transforms himself into his true form and runs off into the forest. Mulder is intrigued by this paranormal encounter.

Scully and Mulder are investigating a homicide committed against a Philadelphia city representative who sought to relocate the homeless . Everything indicates that the killer could not have been human. Scully also has to deal with the fact that her mother is dying. As a result, she is repeatedly confronted with thoughts of William, her son, whom she put up for adoption for his protection . When her mother dies, she throws herself into work. She and Mulder manage to track down the creator of the murderous creature: a street artist named Trashman unintentionally created her as a tulpa as a protector of the homeless .

Two Islamist terrorists blow themselves up in a city in Texas . One of the two assassins initially survived, but is passed out. Mulder, Scully, and two younger FBI agents (Miller and Einstein) try to connect with the man for information on possible future attacks. Scully tries it in collaboration with Miller via EEG . Mulder works with Einstein, who gives him magic mushrooms . Mulder is of the opinion that this enables him to find a level of communication in the subconscious with the assassin, who is no longer accessible. After taking it, he has a kind of dream in which he receives a reference to a hotel called "Babylon" from the assassin. Einstein later says that she didn't give Mulder magic mushrooms, only placebos. At the end of the episode, more potential assassins can actually be captured at the hotel Mulder mentions.

Mulder has disappeared. Tad O'Malley's webcast is on his office laptop (see episode 203). Tad O'Malley contacts Scully. They meet in Mulder's apartment, which is devastated. Tad O'Malley claims he had evidence of a biological attack on the US based on alien DNA and prepared since the 1950s.

In a hospital, Scully and Einstein run into a confused patient with a strange wound on his upper arm. Scully immediately diagnoses anthrax and explains to Einstein that this is the beginning of an epidemic because everyone's DNA has been modified by vaccinations with alien DNA and now the immune system is switched off.

Scully gets a call from her ex-colleague, Monica Reyes. They meet and Reyes reports that she was forced to work for him by the "smoker" over 10 years ago. Alien DNA is not the cause of the collapsing immune system, but the protection for a select few from the Spartan virus that causes the disease. The smoker had sent someone to Mulder to offer him a deal. It came to a fight, however, which Mulder, visibly battered, won.

Meanwhile, Mulder has reached the smoker, but declines his offer of help to save him from the plague. The smoker justifies himself to Mulder that the planet is finished anyway. He has nothing to do with global warming and the extinction of species. He just changed the schedule. The planet would keep turning, only this time not according to God, but according to his rules. Agent Miller found a Phonefinder app on Mulder's laptop that was set to Mulder's cell phone and picks up Mulder from the smoker. Mulder is now sick and very weak. The epidemic is spreading and has reached global proportions.

In the meanwhile overcrowded hospital, Scully and Einstein develop an antidote to the Spartan virus with the help of Scully's alien anomaly DNA. Miller calls and says that Mulder is doing very badly. Scully drives towards them with the antidote. She gets stuck in a traffic jam on a bridge and has to get out. She finds Miller and Mulder, but Scully can't do enough with the antidote alone. They need stem cells from their son, who she doesn't know where he is. A UFO appears over the bridge and lights Scully with a beam of light. End (see cliffhanger ).

Reviews

While the audience in the United States received the new episodes of the series rather positively and the episodes achieved high ratings, the US press rated the start of the tenth season rather negatively. The reviews ranged from “long winded” ( IGN ) to “a missed opportunity” ( Variety ) to “tiresome”, as The Hollywood Reporter judged with regard to the first episode of the new season: “The X-Files in 2016 convinced at least at the beginning not ”, fans should“ think carefully ”about watching. The later episodes, however, received better reviews.

In Germany, the replacement of the voice actor for David Duchovny caused criticism even before the series was broadcast. Followers of the series started an online petition in this regard, but the broadcaster ignored it.

Spiegel Online gave a mixed assessment of the start of the tenth season: optically, “the revival was a success”, but the first episode “got stuck in too much exposure”. Chris Carter plays with the "Internet and its excesses" and the cruelty of reality, staging "Mulder as the king of Internet trolls - frustrated and isolated". Duchovny and Anderson are "just as little at operating temperature in their roles as Mulder and Scully".

Also TV Spielfilm criticized the first episode of the new season, ruling "the first episode is a bitter disappointment." Chris Carter puts the patience of the audience "to the test". However, "not all is lost", there is "behind the camera [...] reason for hope", since instead of Carter the authors Darin Morgan, James Wong and Glen Morgan are responsible for the next four episodes and the episodes written by Carter "Not always the strongest".
