Mulder is sitting desperately in his apartment when he receives a call from Michael Kritschgau, indicating that he is being bugged. Mulder discovers a hole in the ceiling and rushes into the apartment above him, where he kills the government employee Scott Ostelhoff. He informs Scully and tells her that Ostelhoff has called the FBI several times . The FBI investigates and finds Ostelhoff's body, but believes it is Mulder. Scully identifies the body as Mulder. Skinner informs Scully to go to Blevins, whom she informs of the events. Meanwhile, Mulder breaks into a Department of Defense research facility using Ostelhoff's identity. Meanwhile, the cancer candidate looks around Mulder's apartment because he doesn't believe in Mulder's death. Scully finds out that Ostelhoff called Skinner. Mulder finds more fake alien bodies at Defense Department headquarters and enters the Pentagon through a tunnel , where he finds several files in a storage room ( note: this is the same warehouse in which the cancer candidate can be seen at the end of the serial pilot ). Mulder finds an ampoule that he thinks might contain a cure for Scully. Scully testifies before the committee, stating that Mulder was the victim of a conspiracy and that she was infected with an illness by someone in this room. When she tries to present her evidence, she gets a nosebleed and collapses. The Lone Gunmen explain to Mulder that the vial only contains distilled water .
99 2 Redux - part 2 Redux (2) Nov 9, 1997 21 Sep 1998 Kim Manners Chris Carter
Mulder wants to visit Scully at the hospital, where she will be treated after her collapse. In front of their room, however, he is intercepted by Skinner and two agents. They take him to Blevins, where he is supposed to explain why Scully lied for him. Mulder tells Skinner that Scully got her cancer through an FBI agent . The Cancer Candidate meets with the First Elder and tries to convince him that if given a reason, Mulder will switch to her side. Mulder wants to make the conspiracies public. He meets the cancer candidate in the hospital, who tells him that Scully's cancer can be cured with the help of a chip that is in the ampoule . Kritschgau refuses to name Ostelhoff's murderer on the committee and admits not only getting money from the Ministry of Defense , but also from a company called Roush. Scully consults with her doctor, Mulder, and her family about the chip. Finally, she decides to insert the chip. The cancer candidate arranges a meeting with Mulder and brings along a woman who introduces herself as Mulder's sister, Samantha. She calls the cancer candidate her father and cannot remember the kidnapping. The next morning, the Cancer Candidate offers to tell Mulder the truth if he would work for him, which Mulder refuses. Mulder meets Blevins, who wants evidence that Skinner withholds evidence of Ostelhoff's death, and demands that Mulder expose Skinner as a traitor. Finally, Mulder wants to make the deal with the cancer candidate and, contrary to Scully's request, not name Skinner as a traitor. Mulder steps up to the committee and names Blevins a traitor. Meanwhile, Quiet Willy, a member of the consortium, follows the cancer candidate. Quiet Willy shoots the cancer candidate with a rifle when he views a childhood picture of Fox and Samantha. Blevins is shot dead in his office by an agent disguising it as suicide. Skinner informs Mulder of the cancer candidate's death, even if his body was not found, and gives Mulder the photo. Like Kritschgau, Blevins was also on Roush's payroll. Mulder can tell Skinner that Scully's cancer is on the decline.

The episode starts in the media in Baltimore in 1989: a SWAT team storms a warehouse where they find a naked and disoriented Fox Mulder. Mulder yells "You are here". The SWAT team recovers three fugitive men, the Lone Shooters. Byers is interviewed by Detective John Munch and tells what happened: He works for the FCC and attends an electronics fair. He meets an attractive woman whom he follows and also meets Frohike and Langly at the fair. The woman introduces herself to Byers as Holly and has a slip of paper with a combination of letters. Byers knows that these are terms that are part of the Department of Defense computer network . Although Byers was still a loyal government employee at the time, he allowed himself to be persuaded into hacking into the network. He finds the encrypted file of Susanne Modeski, allegedly Holly's daughter. Then Holly's alleged ex-boyfriend appears - it's Mulder. With the help of Frohike and Langly, Byers finds out that Holly is Susanne and that she is wanted for murder, sabotage and terrorism. Susanne admits everything, but says she was tricked by her former employer, a weapons developer. She worked on ergotamine and claims the government wanted to test it on the population. The lone riflemen decrypt the file and now know where the gas storage facility is. Susanne notices that she has a tracking device in her tooth, which is why she pulls it out. In a warehouse they find the gas in asthma inhalers. Mulder arrives, but then two men in black appear who want to lead Susanne away. An exchange of fire releases the gas, causing Mulder to hallucinate . Susanne can escape. X arrives, he intimidates the shooters, then the police appear and arrest the shooters. Munch doesn't believe Byer's story, but Mulder convinces him. The shooters are released and meet Susanne again. She wants to share her story with the press, but then she is kidnapped by X. The shooters turn to Mulder.

Scully drives there and sees Roberta's husband Marshall talking to two men in black. Marshall Sims evicts her from the house. Scully asks investigating officer Kresge to look into the case, but he sees it as a normal suicide. Scully recognizes a striking resemblance between her sister Melissa and Roberta's daughter Emily from a photo. Scully believes in murder and has Roberta's body autopsied. She finds a needle stick in her heel, which Scully suspects that the murder of Roberta was disguised as a suicide. The police search the Sims' house and find a hypodermic needle . Marshall Sims claims to have used these to treat his daughter Emily. Scully watches "Men in Black" waiting in the car near the house. She has Emily's DNA compared with that of her sister. The result shows almost complete agreement, and Scully believes that Melissa kept the pregnancy a secret from the family and then put the child up for adoption. According to the police, the Sims receive large sums of money from a pharmaceutical company called Prangen Pharmazeutiks . Dr. Calderon, Emily's doctor, explains that Emily was part of a medical project and the Sims were getting the money to do it. Marshall Sims is arrested for the murder of his wife and confesses shortly afterwards. Later he is found hanged in his cell, before the men in black were with him. Mulder, Scully, Skinner, and other FBI agents take part in an undercover operation that aims to arrest Jacob Haley, a senior member of the New Spartans anti-government militia. They watch Haley hand an envelope to another man, but then escape. The agents see the man's flesh being eaten away by an unknown toxin. Scully discovers it is a biological warfare agent. Skinner has information that Haley is in a power struggle with New Spartan leader August Bremer. Scully has doubts whether Mulder let Haley escape on purpose and a little later sees her colleague meeting Haley. Before she can intervene, federal agents stop her and Skinner and United States Attorney Leamus inform her that Mulder is investigating as an undercover agent. Mulder is taken to the group's hiding place, but there Haley accuses, interrogates and tortures him of spying for the government. Bremer tests a biological weapon in a cinema and kills 14 people. Scully is wondering how the poison was spread because it didn't come through the air. She secretly meets with Mulder in his apartment, neither of them noticing that Bremer is picking up their conversation. Mulder informs Skinner and Leamus that the Spartans are about to raid a bank and that Haley wants members' files to expose the spy. Leamus publishes edited files for this purpose. Scully discovers that the biological weapon was developed by the US government and fears that Mulder is trapped. The poison spreads by touch and the Spartans want to contaminate the money in the bank with it. Mulder is present at the bank action, after the bogus attack, Bremer accuses Mulder of being a mole. Haley steps in and instead blames Bremer, who however presents the conversation between Mulder and Scully. So the group turns against Haley. Bremer gives Haley a car and offers him to run away and not have to fear any consequences. Mulder, however, is to be executed. Bremer, however, kills an accomplice and allows Mulder to escape. Mulder rushes to the bank to warn people, but Scully is already there. She confronts Leamus because she believes it was an illegal weapon test, and Leamus replies that it is her job to protect the public from the truth. Haley is later discovered sitting dead in the getaway car because the keys were contaminated.

Gary Lambert works at a VinylRight call center and believes that his boss Greg Pincus is an insect-like monster that only he can see. Skinner hires Scully and Mulder to do a threat analysis on a tape manifest that mentions VinylRight. Mulder believes it is a waste of time and goes to VinylRights in Chicago without Scully, where he meets Pincus. The tape was sent to a local radio station to broadcast around the clock. The voice on the tape, which it later turns out to be Lamberts, warns of a monster “hiding in the light” and stalking employees at VinylRights. Mulder tells Scully to find this sentence in the X-Files. Lambert says that his colleague has been turned into a living corpse and runs home to arm himself with a rifle. Scully finds a similar case on the X-Files in Florida in 1992. Mulder asks her to come to Chicago, and when he comes back to VinylRights, Lambert has taken his colleagues and Pincus hostage. When Scully arrives, Lambert has split his hostages into "real people" and "monsters". During the hostage-taking, Lambert shoots a hostage he believes is a zombie. Lambert asks for a camera and Scully sends a SWAT officer disguised as a cameraman into the building. Lambert accuses Pincus of being a monster. Just before the FBI storms the building and Lambert is shot, Mulder sees for a moment that Pincus is a monster. Mulder finds out that Pincus worked wherever a monster was seen "hiding in the light". He tries to convince Scully that Lambert might be right, but she believes that he succumbed to a Folie à Deux with Lambert . Mulder searches Lambert's apartment and finds records there that Lambert has made of Pincus. When Mulder looks out of the window, he sees the corpse-like colleague watching him. He storms outside and can only see her driving away with Pincus. Scully conducts an autopsy on the shot colleague, it turns out that the body has been dead for more than 24 hours, which cannot be. Mulder follows Pincus to Gretchen Starn's house. He sees the monster leaning over them through the window. Mulder enters the apartment, Starns has turned into a zombie, the monster escapes. Starns and Pincus complain to Skinner about Mulder's behavior. Milder thinks he can see how Pincus turns back into the monster and draws his weapon. Skinner holds him back and has him taken to a clinic. Mulder asks Scully to examine the back of Backus' head, where she finds three puncture sites. In his hospital room, Mulder sees the monster's shadow on his window. The nurse has already been bitten by the monster and opens the window so she can enter. The nurse then denies Scully access to Mulder. Then Scully also sees the sister as a corpse and realizes the danger, she shoots the monster, which escapes again. Scully informs Skinner of the incident and Mulder is put back into service. To Mulder, she confirms a folie à deux . The episode ends with a man in another call center seeing similar signs of a creature.
