Scully, Mulder, and Smith see the Bounty Hunter approach and Mulder and Smith flee while Scully tries to stop him. Mulder can stab the Bounty Hunter with the stiletto and then escape on a boat with Smith . The Bounty Hunter is not dead, however, but seizes Scully to find out where Mulder and Smith are going. Only when he realizes that she doesn't know anything does he let go of her. Mulder wants Smith to cure Teena, but he also knows that going to the hospital is too dangerous right now. Instead, they're going to Canada, where Smith says Mulder will see his sister again. In the meantime, the First Elder meets the cancer candidate in the hospital and confronts him with the photos of him with Teena. They realize there is a leak in their ranks and decide to divulge the false information that Teena is in danger to find out who the traitor is. The Bounty Hunter knows where Smith and Mulder are after overhearing a call from Scully to Mulder and is now trying to track them. Scully informs Skinner, who tells her that all of the other Smiths are gone. Scully and Agent Pendrell examine the files the Smiths were putting together and attempt to decrypt them. Scully meets with X , who tells her that the files are related to the government's smallpox eradication program and warns her that Teena is in danger. In Canada, Mulder and Smith find the electrician's body, which is already badly decayed, and Smith leads Mulder to a field where a group of identical children work. The girls all look like Samantha when she was kidnapped. Smith explains that the children are mindless workers and cannot speak. Mulder takes one of the female clones with him. Then the Bounty Hunter appears. He pushes the trio into a large beehive , where the bounty hunter is struck down by a trap of the trio and stabbed several times. Scully and Pendrell inform Skinner and a panel of the Smiths' files, which are a catalog of people. Again the bounty hunter reaches Mulder, Smith and the clone and knocks Mulder down, causing him to lose consciousness. The bounty hunter then pursues the fleeing Smith. Mulder returns to his mother's bedside. The consortium lures X into Mulder's apartment, where he is shot by the gray-haired man. X drags himself to Mulder's apartment, where he writes SRSG on the floor with his blood and then dies. The news leads Mulder to Marita Covarrubias, Assistant to the Special Representative to the Secretary-General of the United Nations . She tells Mulder that the fields in Canada have been abandoned, but shows him pictures of the drone kids at work. In the hospital, the cancer candidate instructs the bounty hunter to cure Mulder's mother so as not to make Mulder unpredictable.

Scully and Mulder investigate after some children find the baby's body while playing. Mulder asks Sheriff Andy Taylor if the Peacocks, whose house is near where they were found, were interviewed. Taylor denies and points out that the family is not integrated into the community, the house has neither electricity nor water and the family is inbreeding . The three Peacock brothers watch the agents from the veranda . The autopsy reveals that the baby was buried alive, and Scully suspects that the child's disfigurement may be due to inbreeding. Mulder notes that there are only three men in the Peacock household. Mulder and Scully go to the house, suspecting that the Peacocks may have kidnapped and raped a woman. In the house they find traces of blood, a pair of scissors and a shovel. An arrest warrant is issued for the brothers. In retaliation, the Peacocks break into Sheriff Taylor's and kill him and his wife. Lab tests show the child's parents must be members of the Peacock family. Forensic evidence points to the Peacocks as the perpetrators in the sheriff's murder, and so Scully Mulder and Deputy Barney Paster rush to the Peacock house to arrest the brothers. Upon entering the house, Paster is killed by a booby trap . Scully and Mulder let the Peacock pigs out of their stables to lure the brothers out of the house. Max Fenig is on a plane over New York and believes he is being followed by a man. The man assembles a pistol from components in the aircraft's toilet . Suddenly the plane begins to vibrate and a bright light comes on. The door of the emergency exit next to Fenig is opened from the outside. Scully and Mulder celebrate Scully's birthday at a bar where they meet Sharon Graffia, who poses as Fenig's sister. She says that Max wanted to bring something to Mulder, but the plane crashed. The agents go to the crash site in Northville, New York and attend an NTSB meeting. Mulder believes the plane was crashed by aliens and that Fenig was abducted by aliens. Mike Millar, the NTSB's chief investigator, rejects Mulder's suggestion. Scully and Mulder discover that there is a nine-minute difference between the time of the crash and the wristwatches of the dead passengers. Scott Garrett, a man in black, stole the improvised pistol from the body of the man who chased Fenig, disguised as an NTSB investigator. He also disfigured the corpse with acid to make identification more difficult. The passenger who was sitting next to Fenig is found alive, his injuries indicate exposure to ionizing radiation . Sharon Graffia denies that Fenig brought radioactive material on board, but does not admit to being his sister. Scully believes Fenig smuggled plutonium on the plane. Mulder still believes Fenig was kidnapped. Scully informs Mulder that Fenig's body has already been removed from the crash site. Sharon Griffan is kidnapped from her hotel room. Mulder identifies Fenig's body and finds that all dead bodies have their watches removed. He refutes the NTSB's official statement that a malfunction caused the crash and believes lack of time is key to the solution. The agents question Louis Frish, an air traffic controller for the US Air Force. Frish states that nothing unusual has happened. After the agents leave, Frish discusses the "truth" with his colleague. Millar tells Mulder that the aircraft's emergency exit was opened from the outside in flight. Frish finds his colleague dead, an armed group of men approaches, but Frish is able to hide. Frish meets with Scully and Mulder. He says the plane was intercepted and disappeared from the radar after an explosion . Mulder believes a UFO was involved. The agents and Frish are now being followed. Millar encounters a UFO at the crash site and finds Sharon, who has returned from her abduction. Scully and Frish rush to Washington, DC while Mulder tries to find the UFO. In a bar, Frish and Scully meet Agent Pendrell, Scott Garrett arrives and shoots Pendrell, while Scully and Frish escape. Mulder comes to the lake where the UFO is suspected, but a search party is already looking. Mulder dives to the bottom of the lake and finds the UFO and the lifeless body of an alien.

Mulder is placed under arrest by the military after they detain him on the beach. In Washington, DC , Scully takes care of Pendrell while Garrett escapes. Frish is placed under the supervision of the military and is under investigation for false testimony . Scully brings Mulder out of custody and tells him the official version of the crash. According to Gonzales and Frish are responsible for it, but for Mulder the UFO is the cause of the accident. Scully tells Mulder that Graffia is not Max Fenig's sister, but that they know each other from a mental hospital. The agents look around Fenig's trailer while the military retrieve the UFO and the alien bodies from the lake. Millar's investigation yielded no results. Mulder believes that Fenig had evidence of extraterrestrial life aboard the machine and that he should have been kidnapped by extraterrestrials on the flight. The attack by the military interceptor crashed the plane and the UFO. Mulder finds a pick-up slip for a bag at the airport in Fenig's trailer. Graffia tells Scully that she stole technology from her former employer that Fenig believed to be extraterrestrial. This consisted of three parts, one of which Max had on board, one part is in her possession and the third is hidden. Mulder picks up the bag at the airport in New York and finds the third part of the technology in it. On the plane back to Washington DC, Mulder meets Garrett. Garrett calls for the technology to be released. Suddenly the plane is shaken and a bright light comes on. Once in Washington DC, Garrett and the bag are gone. Mulder has no recollection of what happened, but he's nine minutes away.

In Cambridge ( Massachusetts ), the two have Kryotechniker Jason Nichols and Lucas Menand a war of words on the street. An old man arrives and warns Menand not to be run over by the bus shortly . The security service of the MIT campus takes the old man firmly, but shortly thereafter Menand is actually detected by the bus and killed. Scully and Mulder investigate and question Nichols, who has been taken into custody because the bus driver said Nichols pushed Menand in front of the bus. The security guard who took the old man away is found dead. He froze to death after being exposed to a chemical freezing agent. Jason admits to Mulder that Menand threatened to inform the public about Jason's fake research. The old man kills Dr. Yonechi by injecting him with a chemical substance. The agents speak to Nichol's friend Lisa Ianelli, who identifies the chemical compound as a fast freezing agent, something Jason has researched for years but has not yet invented. She says that if Yonechi is infected with it, he could still be alive. Lisa, Scully and a medical team succeed in resuscitating Yonechi, but his body heat rises so quickly that he goes up in flames. The agents get a tip from the police that the old man lives in a hotel room and there they find a photo of Jason, Lisa and Yeonechi. Through the picture, Mulder realizes that the old man is a time traveler who wants to change the future and that man is Jason Nichols. Lisa meets the old man and confronts him, while he also injects her with the chemical . Scully manages to save her. Jason confronts the old self in the lab's computer room when the old man tries to erase Jason research. The old man explains that Jason research will enable time travel, but it will also bring chaos. A scuffle breaks out, the old man clings to Jason and goes up in flames, killing them both. Lisa later tries to reconstruct the chemical in the laboratory.

Research shows that all children have the same father. The children's parents blame the head of a fertility clinic for doing artificial inseminations on all mothers except Nelligan . At the clinic, Mulder finds the caretaker who obviously had a dick too. It turns out that the caretaker Eddie van Blundht is the father of all children. Scully suspects Eddie was using knockout drops , but Mulder doubts it. Eddie escapes as he is able to take on the outward form of a police officer. The agents visit his father, a former circus performer, but they quickly realize that it is Eddie who is able to escape again. Eddie transforms into one of the children's fathers and when the real man shows up at home, he transforms into Mulder and leaves the house. The dead body of Eddie's father is found and Scully takes place at a post-mortem examination found that he had an extra muscle layer. Mulder believes Eddie has this layer of muscle and can change his appearance. Eddie visits Nelligan in the form of Mulder and shows her a photo of Eddie. Nelligan says she dated Eddie in high school but he was a loser. Eddie leaves disappointed and the real Mulder visits Nelligan. Mulder quickly notices that Eddie was there and looks for him. Eddie manages to surprise and knock Mulder down. In Mulder's guise, he convinces Scully to return to Washington, DC . Scully and Eddie (in the guise of Mulder) give Skinner their final report. In the evening Eddie visits Scully with a bottle of wine and tries to get her drunk. Just before they kiss, the real Mulder arrives and interrupts them. Eddie turns back again. Skinner realizes that it is his weapon and that he fell into the trap of the cancer candidate. In the mail center, Skinner finds a beehive with dead bees behind a wall . He takes samples to an entomologist and learns that Mulder was there six months ago for a similar matter, whereupon Skinner also contacts Marita Covarrubias, who cannot help him ( Note: This creates a bridge to episode 1 of the fourth season, in which the killer bees also played a role. ). The entomologist is killed by the bees, and his body shows symptoms of smallpox infection . It quickly becomes clear that the bees are transmitting the disease and it appears that the bees were released by a package in the mail center. Mulder realizes from a security camera photo that it was Skinner who tampered with the evidence. The cancer candidate visits the consortium that is responsible for the bees. In South Carolina , a school is attacked by a swarm of bees and Skinner encounters Covarrubias on the spot, who he tells him that he sees the bees as carriers of disease. Skinner meets Mulder in Washington DC, but Skinner manages to get Mulder to understand that he was lured into a trap by the cancer candidate. Mulder then ensures that the murder weapon cannot be traced back to Skinner. Skinner confronts the cancer candidate in a rage. Covarrubias later calls the cancer candidate and he tells her to tell Mulder what he wants to know. At Covarrubias there is a man who overhears the conversation but cannot be recognized.

Angie Pintero, owner of a bowling alley , sends his autistic colleague Harold Spuller into the evening. Shortly afterwards, Pintero sees a young woman trapped in the mechanics of a bowling alley. Pintero sees the police standing in front of his shop and hurries out. The police pick up a body found outside and Pintero realizes that it is the young woman from the bowling alley. Scully and Mulder investigate and suspect that Pintero saw the ghost of the young woman. There have been three similar incidents in the area. On the track on which Pintero saw the ghost, the words She is me ( Eng . "She is me)" are written. An anonymous tip is received over the phone, according to which another victim said She is me as the last word before her death. According to the results of the autopsy , this may not have been possible because her throat was crushed. The call came from a phone booth near a mental hospital, where the agents also meet Harold Spuller. When Scully goes to the washroom because of a nosebleed, a ghost appears there, and the woman's body is found shortly afterwards. At the bowling center, Mulder discovers that Spuller is keeping all the scoresheets, including those of the victims. Spuller suddenly sees the ghost of Pintero and rushes to him. Pintero had a fatal heart attack. Spuller is brought back to the clinic, where he is tormented by nurse Innes. Mulder later finds Innes passed out, claiming that Spuller knocked her down. The patient Chuck Forsch tells Scully that Innes is trying to poison Spuller, and Scully realizes that Innes was responsible for the murders. Scully confronts Innes, whereupon Innes attacks her. Scully is overwhelmed by a shot in the shoulder. Innes admits to having influenced Spuller's behavior through drugs and to want to stop his crushes with the murders. Spuller is found dead shortly afterwards, and Scully later sees his ghost in the back seat of her car.

The episode begins in medias res . The police find a body in Mulder's apartment, Scully identifies the body and then takes part in an FBI committee chaired by FBI section chief Blevins, where she reports on her work with Mulder on the X-Files. Some time earlier, the frozen corpse of an alien was found in the Canadian St. Elias Mountains . The group leader of the expedition , Prof. Arlinsky, sends ice samples that could contain alien DNA to Mulder. Scully examines her and confirms the presence of alien DNA, but she is then attacked by a man who steals the samples. Scully finds out that her attacker, Michael Kritschgau, works for the Department of Defense , she pursues him and arrives at him, but he informs her that his life is in danger. In the meantime, Mulder and Arlinsky return to the mountains and find the expedition members shot dead. Only one man, Babcock, survived and tells them he hid the alien. The men take the alien's body to Washington, DC, where Mulder and Arlinsky perform an autopsy . When Mulder meets with Scully, the killer Scott Ostelhoff kills Arlinsky. Mulder meets Scully and Kritschgau, who says that everything Mulder thinks he knows about aliens is a lie. The kidnapping of Samanthas was bogus and the evidence of extraterrestrial life was biological anomalies. The entire alien myth is an invention of the US government to divert attention from secret military projects and Scully's cancer is also linked to it. Mulder finds Babcock and Arlinsky dead, the alien corpse has disappeared, and Mulder retreats to his apartment in desperation. The narrative jumps back to the present, where Scully testifies before the committee that Mulder died last night from a self-inflicted headshot.
