Aleš Kotalík (born December 23, 1978 in Jindřichův Hradec , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current coach who played 576 games for the Buffalo Sabers , Edmonton Oilers , New York Rangers and in the course of his active career between 1997 and 2014 Calgary Flames has played in the National Hockey League on the position of winger . Since October 2017 he has been working as an assistant coach at his home club HC České Budějovice in the Czech Extraliga , where he ended his playing career.
Career
Aleš Kotalík comes from the offspring of HC České Budějovice and played for this club for many years - first in the U18 extra league, then in the U20 extra league and later with the professionals in the extra league . This loyalty to the club was interrupted by a season at HC Hamé Zlín and five games for HC Vajgar Jindřichův Hradec from his hometown. The trained winger and right-handed shooter was finally selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League in the sixth round in 164th place.
For the 2001/02 season , Kotalík was brought to North America by the Sabers to play for their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . On November 12, 2001 he stepped on the ice for the first time in the NHL and was able to contribute an assist to the 5-3 victory over the Florida Panthers . In the same season he completed a total of 13 games in the NHL and reached four scorer points . On March 19, 2002 he was able to achieve his first NHL goal in the game against the Ottawa Senators .
In the following season , the Czech was able to establish himself in the Sabers team and completed 68 games. He finished the season with the team's second-highest scorer and was the fourth-best rookie in the entire NHL with 35 points. He was also named NHL Rookie of the Month in January 2003 . In his third NHL year he came to 62 games, in which he scored 15 goals and prepared another 21. During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Aleš Kotalík played in his home country for the Czech club Bílí Tygři Liberec in the Extraliga, but returned to Buffalo for the 2005/06 season , where he had his most productive season with 25 goals and 37 assists reached. It was followed by three more playing years with the Buffalo Sabers, before he was given in March 2009 shortly before the expiry of his three-year contract in exchange for a second-round vote in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft to the Edmonton Oilers .
The striker only played 19 games for the Oilers, as both parties could not agree on an extension of the employment relationship in the summer. The free agent signed instead a new three-year contract with the New York Rangers . However, Kotalík could not meet the expectations placed in him until February 2010 and was therefore transferred to the Calgary Flames together with Christopher Higgins . In return, the Rangers received Brandon Prust and Olli Jokinen . The attacker did not find a sporting home in Calgary either. On June 25, 2011, the Flames gave him together with Robyn Regehr and a second-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Chris Butler and Paul Byron to the Buffalo Sabers. After he could not earn a place for the NHL squad of his ex-tram in the training camp, he moved to his home club HC České Budějovice in the Czech extra league for the 2011/12 season .
There Kotalík completed three more seasons, the last of which after the sale of the Extraliga license in the spring of 2013 in the second-rate first division , before he ended his active career. As a result, the Czech remained loyal to his home club. He first worked as an assistant to the general manager in the 2016/17 season , then he became the assistant coach of the second division team at the beginning of the 2017/18 season.
International
For his home country Kotalík played for the first time as part of the Junior World Championship in 1998 , where he finished fourth with the team. For the men's selection , the striker came for the first time in the 2000/01 season as part of the Euro Hockey Tour . In February 2006 he was part of the Czech squad at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy . There he won the bronze medal with the team after having played four tournaments. He also played at the 2008 and 2009 World Championships . His last appearances for his home country were on the Euro Hockey Tour in the 2011/12 season .
