Großkrut (until 1922 Böhmischkrut ) is a market town with 1619 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria.

geography

Großkrut is located in the hill country of the northeastern Weinviertel in Lower Austria, around ten kilometers east of Poysdorf .

The area of ​​the market town covers 38.45 square kilometers. 1.66 percent of the area is forested. The landscape is characterized by arable farming and viticulture .

The place is first mentioned in a document in 1055 .

On the road to Bernhardsthal there is a former gallows , the so-called court column . The last conviction by the high court in Bohemia and execution of the execution "on the gallows, outside the village" took place on November 8, 1743.

Until 1922 the municipality was called "Böhmischkrut", but changed the name in 1922, among other things, because the delivery of mail was often delayed because the name supposedly suggested a location in Czechoslovakia. However, the name was more of a demarcation to the place Dürnkrut .

In the last days of the Second World War , on April 20, 1945, Großkrut became the scene of a short battle between soldiers of the Waffen SS and the Red Army , in which 4 civilians were killed. In Ginzersdorf, 3 civilians were killed in fighting and by fire from Stalin organs , and 11 buildings were destroyed.

Population development

After several decades of a negative birth balance , it became positive for the first time in 2017.

economy

In 2010 there were 71 agricultural and forestry holdings, 43 of which were full-time farms that cultivated 90 percent of the area. In 1999 there were 139 companies, of which 43 were also full-time. In the manufacturing sector there were six establishments employing 84 people, 81 of them in construction. The service sector employed 173 people in 54 companies, more than half of them in social and public services.
