The Am286 processor family was a copy of the Intel 80286 . The basis was a manufacturing agreement between Intel and AMD - which came about under pressure from IBM and also existed with other semiconductor manufacturers - which allowed AMD to manufacture and sell copies of the Intel CPUs under its own name. An internal IBM policy stipulated that there had to be at least two suppliers for manufacturing components. IBM wanted to make sure that enough CPUs were available for its PCs.
