Attack on Titan (Eng. "Attack on (the) Titan"; Japanese 進 撃 の 巨人 , Shingeki no Kyojin , Eng. "Attacking giant") is a manga series by the Japanese artist Hajime Isayama , which was also implemented as an anime , received several manga spin-offs and other implementations. The work can be classified into the genres of action, horror and fantasy and won the 2011 Kōdansha Manga Prize in the Shōnen category . In the German-speaking world, the manga has been published since March 2014 and the anime since October 2016 under the title Attack on Titan .

The plot of Attack on Titan revolves around the young Eren Jäger, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackermann and his best friend Armin Arlert, who live together with the rest of humanity in cities that are protected by huge walls from the attacks of the so-called titans, gigantic humanoids Beings who devour people for no apparent reason are protected.

The walls that promised peace have existed for 107 years. But one day the titans break through the outermost wall of Maria and the people are pushed back further. Eren's mother dies and he and many other people flee behind the second wall, Rose. Eren swears when his mother dies that he will wipe out the Titans. He grows up inside the second wall, while many people die from the onset of famine or desperate attempts to recapture the outer wall. Two years later, he joined the military, as did Mikasa and Armin. They complete their training after three years. Shortly after their graduation ceremony, the titans attack the Trost wall district. Like many of his comrades, Eren is devoured by a titan during battle, but soon afterwards a titan appears who attacks other titans. It turns out to be Eren, who can turn into a Titan. After he was initially met with great suspicion by the armed forces, he was used by the military against the attack, was able to successfully repel an attack for the first time and seal the wall of the Trost district with a huge boulder. Eren is then transferred to the Scout Squad so that they can research his skills and recapture the outer wall. Mikasa and Armin follow Eren to the reconnaissance troop, where they report to Levi.

Soon the reconnaissance troop embarks on its first mission with Eren outside the wall. Eren's home district of Shiganshina is given as the target, where information about the origins of the titans is hoped for in the records of his father, a doctor. But on the way they meet a female titan who wants to attack Eren directly and behaves intelligently. Catching this is the ultimate goal of the mission, as it is likely a titan walker like Eren and acts for a group that has infiltrated the army. But the mission fails and the reconnaissance troop returns defeated. With the collected information, however, Armin can determine the identity of the titan walker. They set a trap for her, former comrade and current military policeman Annie Leonhardt, in the Stohess district. In a battle between her and Eren as a titan, she can eventually be defeated and captured in her human form but trapped in a crystal.

Important elements

Titans

The titans, giant humanoid beings, are the antagonists of the series. They reach a height of 3 to 15 meters, with one exception, which is 60 meters tall.

They appeared about a hundred years before the onset of action, driving humanity to the brink of annihilation. The titans seem to have no other goals than the instinctive devouring of humans, other living beings are ignored by them. However, humans do not serve them as food because they do not have a digestive system. When the "stomach" is full, the eaten people simply vomit, as they also survived for over 100 years without meeting people. There are also titans who do not pursue the goal of eating people, but rather act logically and consciously tackle the weak points of humanity.

The titans also have no reproductive organs and their origins are completely unknown to humans. Despite their size, they weigh very little and are as fast as horses, but there are exceptions here, too. Their skin is very resilient, and every wound they inflict heals in a very short time thanks to their enormous regenerative abilities. Her only weak point is in her neck. Because of this weak point, people developed what is known as “3D maneuver equipment”, which allows them to reach and attack them.

Human armed forces

The human military is divided into three different divisions:

  • The wall garrison ( 駐 屯兵 団 , chūton heidan ) protects the cities and their inhabitants within the walls in the event of an attack by the titans. It forms the first line of defense and is also responsible for defending and reinforcing the walls.
    • The training army corps ( 訓練 兵 団 , kunren heidan ) takes care of the training of the recruits and is not an independent division, but subordinate to the wall garrison.
  • The reconnaissance troop ( 調査 兵 団 , chōsa heidan ) operates outside the walls. His main task is to research the titans, their goals and origins as well as to scout out unknown terrain. Therefore, the reconnaissance troop is usually the only species that comes into contact with the titans and has to actively fight them. On average, only half of the reconnaissance troop's expeditions return.
  • The military police ( 憲兵 団 , kempeidan ) regulate and secure public order within human areas and thus operate furthest away from the titans. Only the ten best recruits per training session are allowed to join immediately after completing basic training, as this post enjoys the highest authority.

Since humans are significantly smaller and weaker than most Titans, the strategies of the human armed forces focus on slowing their opponents through barricades and artillery.

The targeted killing of a titan requires the wounding of the neck. In order to reach this weak point, the armed forces use "3D maneuver apparatus". These consist of a harness which is provided with gripping hooks on wire ropes and a gas-powered drive system. These components allow people to move around the titans quickly and with great agility in the fight against them, but their application requires great dexterity and physical strength. Specially hardened steel blades are used to penetrate the titans' skin.

Territory and walls

The human area and thus the entirety of human civilization is completely surrounded by the three huge walls Maria, Rose and Sina, which are all around 50 meters high and 10 meters thick. The outermost wall Maria has a circumference of 3,200 km, which means that the human area was only reduced to 720,000 km² (twice the area of ​​Germany) and after the fall of the outermost wall to a little more than half. In the anime, a radius of about 250 km is given for Sina, about 380 km for Rose and about 480 km (i.e. about 3000 km circumference) for Maria. They are equipped with cannons and other defenses, the only weak point being the gates that connect the respective areas. Since the human population is on the order of a million, they do not have the resources to man and defend the entire wall, which is why the larger cities are located in four separately protected bulges per wall, which also serve the attacks of the titans focus on these areas. The origin and construction of the walls is unknown to the general public, which is also due to the fact that they are the only protection of mankind and the central object of worship of the "Wall Church " ( ウ ォ ー ル 教 , Wōru-kyō ), which prevents any further investigation or changes.

Eren Jäger / Eren Yeager ( エ レ ン ・ イ ェ ー ガ ー , Eren Yēgā )
Eren Jäger, an impulsive, idealistic young man, is the protagonist of the series. He swore on his mother's death to exterminate the titans and explore the outside world. As a young boy, he killed two criminals who had recently killed Mikasa's parents, and then got them to kill the remaining third criminal when he attacked Eren.
At the beginning of the plot, Eren, Mikasa and their mutual friend Armin experience the first attack by titans in a hundred years. Eren has to watch as his mother is eaten by a titan. This event moved Eren to join the military, and eventually the reconnaissance force, along with Mikasa and Armin. Eren has the ability to transform into a titan, although he can only partially control it at first.

After her parents were killed by human traffickers and she was rescued by Eren, the hunter family adopted Mikasa. Because of her past, she is very concerned about Eren's safety and tries to protect him in every situation. She graduated from the military academy at the top of her class and is considered an unprecedented talent and excellent fighter who always keeps her calm. Mikasa is described as the last living Oriental.
Armin Arlert ( ア ル ミ ン ・ ア ル レ ル ト , Arumin Arureruto )
Armin is Eren's and Mikasa's best friend and comrade in the reconnaissance troop. He is physically and mentally weak and although he has been able to save his friends many times with his above-average tactical understanding, he suffers from a lack of self-confidence and considers himself incapable and too dependent on others. When he was about to die in the fight against the enemy Titan Walkers, he was turned into a Titan with a syringe and ate Berthold to become a Titan Walker. Pure Brown ( ラ イ ナ ー ・ ブ ラ ウ ン , Rainā Buraun )
After Mikasa, Reiner was the second best of the class at the military academy. He is distant from others and can usually be found with Berthold. Later it turns out that he is the armored titan and thus also a titan walker.
Berthold Fubar / Bertolt Hoover ( ベ ル ト ル ト ・ フ ー バ ー , Berutoruto Fūbā )
Berthold was the third best of the year. He is distant from others and can usually be found with Reiner and was in love with Annie. He was the colossal Titan, so also a titan walker. When the reconnaissance troop identified him as a titan walker and enemy, he was initially able to flee as prisoners with Reiner and Ymir. But when Zeke, Reiner and Berthold try to kidnap Eren in the Battle of Shiganshina, his side is defeated and he is eaten by Armin.

Annie was the fourth best of the year. She has a stoic nature. She is also an expert in unarmed hand-to-hand combat, which she later taught Eren. Like Eren, she can transform into a titan. Later in the story, she turns against the humans and tries to kill Eren. In a fierce battle, Eren can defeat them. After her defeat, Annie seals herself in a diamond-like crystal that cannot be penetrated. As it turned out, she killed the two captive titans Sonny and Bean, who were being tortured by Hanji. Jean was the sixth best of the year. Jean is very direct and has an opportunistic character, which often gets him into disputes with the idealistic Eren. After graduating, he joins the secure military police, but changes to the reconnaissance force after the death of a good friend.
Marco Bott ( マ ル コ ・ ボ ッ ト , Maruko Botto )
Marco was the seventh best of the 104th year. He died during the battle for consolation. This event led Jean to join the scouting force. In the manga and in the 3rd episode of the 2nd part of the 3rd season we learn that Marco overheard Reiner and Bertold as they talk about destroying the walls again. Ymir is also out of the 104th training session and helped her friend Christa get into the top 10 of her training session. Like Christa, she chooses the reconnaissance troop after her training. After the female titan was stopped in comfort, other titans emerge within the Wall Rose. To protect Christa and other people in her troop, she transforms into a Titan at Utgard Castle and fights the other Titans. She is later kidnapped by Berthold and Reiner.
Keith Shadis ( キ ー ス ・ シ ャ ー デ ィ ス , Kīsu Shādisu )
Keith Shadis is the 12th commander of the Scout Squad and Erwin Smith's predecessor. He himself gave up his place in the reconnaissance troop and became an instructor in the training army corps and also trained the 104th training unit. He was a good friend of Grisha and discovered him wandering outside the walls 20 years before the main storyline. He was in love with Carla, Grisha's future wife, but could never tell her.

Erwin Smith ( エ ル ヴ ィ ン ・ ス ミ ス , Eruvin Sumisu )
Erwin was the 13th commander of the reconnaissance force. Erwin is the first and so far only commander of the reconnaissance force who was appointed commander while the predecessor is still alive. He dies fighting the Beast Titan.
Levi Ackermann / Levi Ackerman ( リ ヴ ァ イ ・ ア ッ カ ー マ ン , Rivai Akkāman )
Levi is considered to be the strongest fighter of mankind and heads a special unit ( 特別 作 戦 班 , tokubetsu sakusenhan , “special strategy unit ” or リ ヴ ァ イ 班 , Rivai-han , “unit Levi”) in the reconnaissance troop , which is entrusted with the most dangerous missions. Grisha Hunter
Grisha Jäger was Eren's father, Carla's husband and Mikasa's adoptive father. He originally comes from the mainland and grew up there in an Eldish ghetto. His younger sister Fay was murdered by Marley soldiers at the age of eight after they escaped from the ghetto. Grisha later became a doctor, but was eventually recruited by Grice for the Eldic resistance movement. During this time he met his first wife, Dina Fritz, and fathered her a son, Zeke. The latter reveals his parents' membership in the resistance to the Marley authorities, who arrest them and ban them to the island of Paradis, the main scene of the action.

Dina Jäger ( ダ イ ナ ・ イ ェ ー ガ ー , Daina Yēgā ) , b.Fritz ( フ リ ッ ツ , Furittsu )
Dina was Grisha's first wife and met him on the mainland. She has noble blood and was therefore used by the anonymous person Night Owl to steal a titan power with her and Grisha's son Zeke. When her movement was betrayed by Zeke, she was banished to Paradis and turned into a titan. When the Colossal Titan attacked Wall Maria, she went to Grisha's house within the walls and ate his new wife, Carla.
Zeke Jäger ( ジ ー ク ・ イ ェ ー ガ ー , Jīku Yēgā )
Zeke is Eren's older half-brother and the son of Grisha and Dina Jäger (née Fritz). He is a titan walker and holder of the Beast Titan. His parents saw in him Eldia's hope. However, he betrayed his parents to the Marley as a child and became a warrior. After the battle to retake Shiganshina, in which he narrowly escapes Levi from the reconnaissance troop, he tells Eren that one day he will save him. He hides the fact that he is of noble descent from the Marley army, in which he holds the post of warrior chief.
Eren Kruger ( エ レ ン ・ ク ル ー ガ ー , Eren Kurūgā )
By falsifying a blood test by an Eldish doctor, Eren Kruger was able to make a career in the Marley Army, even though he is Eldish. As an owl , he anonymously supported the eldish resistance in Marley. He knew that Grisha Jäger's sister Fay was being mauled by dogs and murdered by Marley soldiers. Manga

Hajime Isayama sent a pre-shot oneshot in 2006 as his contribution to Kōdansha's young talent MGP (Magazin Grand Prix). Although his drawings in particular were criticized, the judges were able to convince the plot, originality and presentation, so that he received an award worth 300,000 yen. A oneshot tape under the name Attack on Titan 0 was added as an extra to the 2013 limited version of the first DVD / Blu-ray of the anime, which Isayama created in 2005. To publish the manga, he also offered it to the editors of Japan's best-selling shōnen manga magazine Shōnen Jump from the Shūeisha publishing house , which, however, had an adaptation of the style and plot to their own target group as an edition for a publication. Finally, he turned back to Kōdansha, where the manga Shingeki no Kyojin , with the English subtitle attack on titan , has been published monthly in individual chapters in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine since September 9, 2009 (issue 10/2009) . So far, the chapters have been summarized in 31 edited volumes . For some time the series was made up of around 20 volumes.

The manga is published in more than eight languages ​​and more than ten countries. In the USA, the manga has been published by Kodansha Comics since June 2012 under the title Attack on Titan . This won the 2014 Harvey Award in the category Best American Edition of Foreign Material ("best American publication of foreign material"). Tong Li licensed the series for Taiwan. As of January 2014, the manga had sold 660,000 times in the US, 530,000 times in South Korea and 420,000 times in Taiwan.

In Germany, the manga has been published by Carlsen Manga under the title Attack on Titan and the subtitle shingeki no kyojin since March 18, 2014 and has so far recorded “well over 1.5 million copies sold”. Up to the 16th volume a new volume was published every two months and since the 16th volume every three or four months. So far, 29 volumes have been published and every fifth volume has a slipcase - with space for five volumes - with an extra. Since October 30, 2018, the manga by Carlsen Manga appears in a deluxe edition for the first time with hardcover , color pages and in a larger format. Each deluxe volume contains three edited volumes.

backgrounds

Conceptually, Hajime Isayama was strongly influenced by Muv-Luv Alternative , in which humanity is also pushed to the brink of extinction by overpowering, huge opponents.

The figures are partly designed according to real models. Eren's titan form is based on the MMA fighter Yūshin Okami , the armored titan is based on the wrestler and former MMA fighter Brock Lesnar and the Japanese general Akiyama Yoshifuru was the model for Commander Dot Pixis .

In Japan, the two books Attack on Titan - Inside and Attack on Titan - Outside were published in 2013 - in German in 2015 and 2016 - with background information and artwork. In Outside is the first draft or the Phantom chapter of Attack on Titan it should usher in what the Manga in series form would. The draft was discarded and the current first chapter was created, with a lot of material from the draft being carried over into the third and fourth chapters. A third book was published in Japan in 2016 and is due to appear in German on December 19, 2017 under the name Attack on Titan - Answers . Attack on Titan - Before the Fall

Based on the light novel trilogy of the same name Shingeki no Kyojin: Before the fall , Satoshi Shiki drew a manga adaptation in Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine from August 26, 2013 (issue 10/2013) and closed it on March 26, 2019 (issue 05/2019). The series ended with 17 edited volumes. The series was published in German from February 2015 to June 2020 under the name Attack on Titan - Before the Fall by Carlsen Manga.

Attack on Titan - No Regrets

In Shōjo -Manga magazine Aria ran on 28 September 2013 (issue 11/2013), another spin-off called Attack on Titan - No Regrets ( 進撃の巨人悔いなき選択 Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku , subtitles: Birth of Levi ), which has been published since issue 1/2014. This puts the figure Levi in ​​the foreground. The concept comes from Gun Snark (Gun Sunaaku) and the drawings from Hikaru Suruga. Due to the high demand, the magazine's circulation had to be quintupled from almost 14,000 copies. The chapters have been summarized in two edited volumes. Carlsen Manga published the volumes in German in April and August 2015.

On June 9, 2017, both volumes appeared in a “Full Color Edition” (FCE), in which all black and white pages were subsequently colored. The German release was announced for the end of May and the end of July 2018.

In the special edition of the 15th volume of Attack on Titan, which was published on December 9, 2014, an OVA was enclosed that tells part of No Regrets . In the special edition of the 16th volume, the second and last part of the OVA series was included on DVD.

Attack on Titan - short play

The Yonkoma strip parody Sungeki no Kyojin ( 寸 劇 の 巨人 ) was published in DeNA's App Manga Box from December 4, 2013 to December 31, 2014 , with one new chapter per week, in Japanese and English before it was published in 2014 and was printed in two edited volumes in Japan in 2015. At the end of January 2017, the parody was published by Carlsen Manga under the title Attack on Titan - short play in a volume in German.

Attack on Titan - Lost Girls

Between August 9, 2015 and May 9, 2016, Ryōsuke Fuji published a spin-off in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine under the title Shingeki no Kyojin: Lost Girls , which is based on the novel of the same name. The manga series is concluded with two volumes.

Like the No Regrets manga, Lost Girls was also adapted as an anime. In each of the special editions of the original manga of volumes 24 to 26, a DVD was enclosed and the plot told as a trilogy.

Kōdansha published the light novel series Shingeki no Kyojin: Before the fall ( 進 撃 の 巨人 Before the fall) for the manga . It was written by Ryō Suzukaze and illustrated by Thores Shibamoto. The novel consists of three volumes published on December 2, 2011 ( ISBN 978-4-06-375202-1 ), March 30 ( ISBN 978-4-06-375228-1 ) and June 29, 2012 ( ISBN 978- 4-06-375243-4 ) published.

On August 1, 2014 ( ISBN 978-4-06-375296-0 ) the series of novels Attack on Titan - The Harsh Mistress of the City ( 進 撃 の 巨人 隔絶 都市 の 女王 , Shingeki no Kyojin: Kakuzetsu Toshi no Joō , engl. Subtitle: The Harsh Mistress of the City ) by Ryō Kawakami with illustrations by Range Murata . The story was told to the end on May 1, 2015 with the 2nd volume ( ISBN 978-4-06-375299-1 ). Both volumes were published in German by Carlsen on December 22, 2015 ( ISBN 978-3-551-74019-9 ) and April 26, 2016 ( ISBN 978-3-551-74020-5 ).

Another novel called Attack on Titan - Lost Girls ( 進 撃 の 巨人 LOST GIRLS), which focuses on the characters Mikasa and Annie, was published on December 9, 2014 ( ISBN 978-4-06-377096-4 ). It was written by Hiroshi Seko, who also wrote the scripts for several episodes of the anime. Carlsen published the volume in German on August 30, 2016 ( ISBN 978-3-551-72781-7 ).

Television series

season 1

With the support of the parent company Production IG, WIT Studio adapted the first eight volumes of the manga as an anime series. Tetsurō Araki is directing with the assistance of Hiroyuki Tanaka and Masashi Koizuka, while the character design is by Kyōji Asano. The first broadcast ran from April 7 to September 29, 2013 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day) on MBS , as well as Tokyo MX , Fukuoka Hōsō , TV Ōita , Hokkaidō TV , TV Aichi and BS11 with a few days offset . The series comprises 25 episodes, with an additional summary episode broadcast in the middle. An English subtitled version will be streamed by both Funimation and Crunchyroll , the former from April 12 and the latter from April 14, 2013 in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland. At the beginning of 2014, Kazé secured the rights for the German-speaking area. After some delays, the series was released on DVD and Blu-ray in October 2016. The second season, additionally entitled " Season 2 ", was initially announced for 2016 and confirmed by the director Tetsurō Araki and the voice actors , but was postponed to the beginning of 2017. With the publication of the 88th chapter and the 21st manga volume, it was announced in December 2016 that the anime series would be continued in April 2017. The second season started on April 1, 2017 on Tokyo MX . The German distributor Kazé Deutschland secured the rights for Germany and showed them on Anime on Demand . The episodes were made available for international launch ( simulcast ) 90 minutes after the Japanese first broadcast with German subtitles. The season appeared in 2019 in two volumes with German synchronization - only after the third film, which summarizes the second season.

season 3

The third season was announced right after the final episode of the second season aired for 2018. On October 29, 2017, as part of the Attack on Taikan II event, it was announced that the third season, now entitled " Season 3 ", would be broadcast on Japanese television from July 2018. The season has been broadcast on NHK General TV since July 23, 2018 and is said to be 22 episodes long. The world premiere of the first episode took place on July 8, 2018 at the Anime Expo 2018 in Los Angeles , California . The broadcast paused after the twelfth episode and continued from April 29 to July 1, 2019.

Season 4

At the end of the third season it was announced that a fourth and final season, entitled " The Final Season ", would follow in autumn 2020 on NHK General TV. After rumors, even during the broadcast of the second half of season three, that WIT Studio would not produce another season, it was officially confirmed with the release of a preview at the end of May 2020 that Studio MAPPA would produce the final season and therefore almost all of the staff behind the scenery was changed. There were no indications of a broadcast date.

season 1

The first season of the television series came back to the cinemas in two anime films edited together. The first film, Attack on Titan Part 1 - Fire-Red Bow and Arrow ( 劇場版 「進 撃 の 巨人」 前 編 〜 紅蓮 の 弓矢 〜 Gekijōban Shingeki no Kyojin Zenpen - Guren no Yumiya ), covers the first 13 episodes and ran from 22 November 2014 in Japanese cinemas while the second film, Attack on Titan Part 2 - Wings of Freedom ( 劇場版 「進 撃 の 巨人」 後 編 〜 自由 の 翼 〜 Gekijōban Shingeki no Kyojin Kōhen - Jiyū no Tsubasa ), with the remaining 12 episodes performed as of July 27, 2015. The films received a new synchronization, new and revised scenes, especially at the end of the second film, which were used at the beginning of the second season of the anime series. The film titles Fire-Red Bow and Arrow and Wings of Freedom are the titles of the opening credits of the first anime season.

The film Fire Red Bow and Arrow was shown on October 31, 2017 as part of the Kazé Anime Nights 2017 in cinemas across Germany and Austria. The Austrian cinema chain Cineplexx was the only cinema chain to postpone the film to November 14, 2017. On March 30, 2018 it should have been released on DVD and Blu-ray in stores, but was postponed to June 29, 2018. Anime on Demand released the film on June 9, 2018. The second film was also postponed from April 27, 2018 to June 29, 2018, which is why its German-language premiere took place on June 23, 2018 on Anime on Demand.

season 2

On October 29, 2017, an anime film that would summarize the second season of the anime was announced. A poster and trailer were released on the same day. The film Attack on Titan Part 3 - Roar of Awakening ( 劇場版 「進 撃 の 巨人」 Season 2 ～ 覚 醒 の 咆哮 ～ Gekijōban Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2 - Kakusei no Hōkō ) premiered in Japanese cinemas on January 13, 2018. and also includes a preview of the third season. Part three was premiered on June 26, 2018 as part of the Kazé Anime Nights 2018 in German and Austrian cinemas with German dubbing - even before the German-language release of the second season - and appeared in stores on February 22, 2019.

Season 1 to 3

Along with the publication of a preview for season four, it was announced at the end of May 2020 that a new summary would be shown in Japanese cinemas on July 17, 2020. This time the plot of all 59 episodes that have appeared so far is summarized. The film is entitled Shingeki no Kyojin Kuronikuru ( 「進 撃 の 巨人」 〜 ク ロ ニ ク ル 〜 Shingeki no Kyojin: Chronicle ).

OVA

The first original video animation (OVA for short) was included as a DVD in the limited edition of the 12th manga volume. It is an implementation of the special chapter Ilse's notebook from the 5th manga volume.

The second and third OVA are not based on any manga chapters and were included with the limited editions of volumes 13 and 14 on DVD, but took some other works by Hajime Isayama as inspiration.

The manga spin-off Attack on Titan - No Regrets was also implemented as the OVA of the same name. The first part was included with the limited edition of the 15th volume of the main manga published on December 9, 2014, and a second part was included with the limited edition of the 16th volume published on April 9, 2015. The production staff of the television series was taken over. The OVA is not available in HD quality as the manga only came with DVDs.

The anime adaptation of the spin-off Attack on Titan - Lost Girls was announced for 2017 and 2018 . The plot is to be told in three OVA episodes. The DVDs are to be added to the Japanese special editions of volumes 24 to 26 of the original manga.

Spin-off

The manga spin-off Shingeki! Kyojin Chūgakkō , which parodically depicts the plot as everyday school life, also received an adaptation as a television series. It was produced by Production IG and directed by Yoshihide Ibata and was broadcast on MBS from October 4, 2015 to December 20, 2015.

An English subtitled version was streamed as a simulcast in the US by Funimation and Hulu. A German subtitled version was offered in German-speaking countries with the international title Attack on Titan: Junior High on Anime on Demand.

The music for the series and the films was composed by Hiroyuki Sawano .

For the first 13 episodes, the opening credits Feuerroter Pfeil und Bogen ( 紅蓮 の 弓矢 , also Guren no Yumiya ) by Linked Horizon were used, whereby the German title appears in the original as a transcription of the Japanese characters and the first line of the lyrics is also German. Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai ( 美 し き 残酷 な 世界 ) sung by Yōko Hikasa was used in the credits . From episode 14 the song Wing of Freedom ( 自由 の 翼 , also Jiyū no Tsubasa ) by Linked Horizon was used in the opening credits , which also contains German text passages and the credits great escape sung by cinema staff .

The single Jiyū e no Shingeki ( 自由 へ の 進 撃 ) with the two opening titles, which went on sale on July 10, 2013, sold 129,110 times in its week of publication, 58,770 of which on the first day alone, putting it in second place Oricon charts started. X Japans YOSHIKI contributed together with HYDE the song Red Swan as opening credits for the first half of the third season. Linked Horizon created the song Akatsuki no Chinkonka ( 暁 の 鎮魂歌 , also Requiem of Dawn ) as the first credits of the third season.

Real films

Japan

In October 2011, the adaptation of the manga as a real film was announced. In December 2012, director Tetsuya Nakashima left the project due to differences over the script. He was then replaced by Shinji Higuchi as director, with the script by Yūsuke Watanabe and the main character being played by Haruma Miura. Hiroki Hasegawa , Kiko Mizuhara and Kanata Hongo also play leading roles . The project consists of two individual films, the release of which was planned for summer 2015. The plot partly deviates from the manga template. An accompanying three-part mini-series was released for the films.

Both films were licensed by Eye See Movies for German-speaking countries , premiered in German cinemas and released on DVD and Blu-ray.

United States

In January 2017 there was a first report from Deadline.com, according to which the US film studio Warner Bros. was trying to acquire the film rights to a new adaptation for producer David Heyman . This report contradicted a representative of the responsible publishing house Kōdansha and assessed the report as "incorrect". At the end of October 2018, Variety finally announced that Warner Bros. and Kōdansha had signed a contract for a new film adaptation. Andy Muschietti ( Es (2017) ) will direct the film and be produced by David Heyman, Masi Oka and Barabara Muschietti .

The series won the 2011 Kōdansha Manga Prize in the Shōnen category. The series sold over 3 million copies in its first year - since its release, Attack on Titan has become a manga bestseller , both in Japan and in the USA . While a total of 10 million copies of the nine volumes were sold before the anime was broadcast in December 2012, this rose to 23 million or 20 million in August 2013 when volume 11 appeared, according to Oricon , and with the appearance of the 14th volume . Volume to 40 million copies at the beginning of August 2014. Volume 12 had a first edition of 2.2 million copies, the second most after Eiichirō Odas One Piece .
