The Breitscheid motorway junction (abbreviation: AK Breitscheid ; short form: Breitscheid cross ) is a motorway junction in North Rhine-Westphalia , which is located in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region . Here the A 52 ( Mönchengladbach - Marl ) crosses the federal motorway 3 ( Oberhausen - Frankfurt am Main - Passau ), and the A 524 begins here by branching off from the A 52.

geography

The crossing point is in the area of the city of Ratingen , near the Breitscheid district . The surrounding cities are Essen , Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr . The cross is located about 15 km southwest of Essen and about 15 km north of Düsseldorf .

The Breitscheid interchange is number 16 on Autobahn 3 and number 25 on A 52.

particularities

The cross is officially called "AK / AD-Breitscheid". It consists of the motorway junction of the A 3 with the A 52 and the motorway triangle of the A 52 and the A 524 .

Remodeling 2012

Since the beginning of 2012, the motorway junction has been subject to major reconstruction measures in order to better handle commuter traffic to Düsseldorf. The main component of the renovation work was the unbundling of the traffic flows from Oberhausen (A 3) to Düsseldorf (A 52) and Krefeld ( A 524 ) with those from Essen (A 52) and Cologne (A 3) in the direction of Düsseldorf (A 52) and Krefeld (A 524). For this purpose, the connecting ramps Oberhausen-Düsseldorf and Cologne / Essen-Krefeld were separated from one another with the help of a new arrangement. In addition, the expansion of these two connecting ramps to two lanes each has improved the efficiency of the motorway junction and relieved the traffic flow from Oberhausen (A 3) to Krefeld (A 524).

The renovation of the motorway junction was completed in August 2012. The costs amount to around 7 million euros .

Traffic volume

It is one of the busiest road junctions in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 223,000 vehicles per day in 2015.
