International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition
The International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition Leipzig (based on the composer Johann Sebastian Bach ) is a music competition for young performers . It was advertised for the first time in 1950 , carried out every four years from 1964 to 1996 with five subjects and has been held every two years since 1996 in three changing subjects: piano , harpsichord , violin / baroque violin or organ , vocals , cello / baroque violoncello. The competition is open to instrumentalists and singers between 16 and 33 years of age.
structure
The organizer of the competition is the Leipzig Bach Archive , the patron is the Prime Minister of Saxony . The competition is under the supervision of its president and manager.
The jury for the competition is made up of internationally renowned artists and professors. Dmitri Shostakovich was a member of the first jury in 1950 .
In 1965 she joined the World Federation of International Music Competitions .
particularities
The competition strives for equality between historical and modern performance practice . In 2006, for example, it was held in parallel for harpsichord and piano, with partly the same compulsory program. In the categories violin / baroque violin and violoncello / baroque violoncello, participants can decide whether they want to perform with a baroque or modern instrument or with both variants.
In addition, an audience award will be awarded in the semifinals .
Award winners
A first, a second and a third prize will be awarded in each category. The winners of these awards are named "Bach Prize Winners". In addition to these awards, various special and audience awards are given. Until 2004 it happened again and again in the history of the competition that no first prize was awarded in one or more categories, or that one prize went to two sponsors.
Tatjana Petrovna Nikolajewa (piano), Amadeus Webersinke and Karl Richter (organ) and Igor Besrodny (violin) won the first prizes at the 1st International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1950 .
