action

In San Francisco's Chinatown district , the young Chinese restaurant owner Wang Chi is expecting his fiancée Miao Yin from Beijing , but she is kidnapped by the henchmen of industrialist David Lo Pan. Jack Burton, a trucker and Wang's friend, joins the search for Miao Yin, but in the process becomes acquainted with powers that are beyond his wits - almost all of his opponents use black magic . Lo Pan is actually a more than 2200 year old spirit who rebelled against the first sovereign emperor in ancient China , was cursed by Jin Dai, the god of the east, with the curse of fleshlessness and now with the help of a ritual, which is the wedding with and includes the sacrifice of a special woman who wants to regain his human form. His chosen one is said to be a girl with green eyes; this is true of Miao Yin.

Strengthened by the tourist bus driver and magician Egg Shen, the lawyer Grace "Gracie" Law, the reporter Margo Litzenberger and the head Eddie from Wang's restaurant, Jack and Wang break into Lo Pan's domicile, but they cannot find Miao Yin. Instead, Grace, who also fulfills the conditions of Lo Pan's prophecy, is kidnapped, and now both women are being prepared for the wedding with him. Under Egg Shen's guidance, Jack, Wang and a group of helpers manage to penetrate Lo Pan's fortress again and advance to the wedding hall, where Lo Pan is about to complete the ceremony.

Jack succeeds with some difficulty in finally bringing Lo Pan down, barely that he has regained his mortality, and after their successful escape with a new understanding of the supernatural in the world, he separates from his Chinese friends - but only for one of Lo Pan's monsters as stowaways on the neck.

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews when it was released and fell through with audiences, so only brought in a fraction of the cost. Only when it was published on video did it become a success over the years and an insider tip for many fans. The film received a rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metascore of 53 out of 100 on Metacritic .

"Elaborately staged spectacle that combines the clichés of western adventure films with kung fu acrobatics and uses the prejudice-laden image of the opaque, criminal Asians as the occasion for a fast-paced but bloodless action comedy."

“Pompous costumes, gigantic special effects and a lot of action make the appeal of the parody of all Eastern , fantasy and adventure clichés . Action and horror specialist John Carpenter (' Assault ', ' Die Ratterschlange ', ' Halloween ') delivers a tongue-in-cheek film fun full of hair-raising experiences: his protagonists have to move from one action scene to the next at a breathtaking speed. Steven Spielberg and various colleagues from Hong Kong send their regards. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".

Others

  • John Carpenter was dissatisfied with the end of the film, and there was a lot of anger and interference from the 20th Century Fox studio . One employee was unjustifiably accused of theft, and Carpenter felt he was treated very disrespectfully by the studio bosses. The film is also offered on DVD with an alternative ending.
  • After his experience filming Big Trouble , Carpenter was so disappointed with Hollywood that he decided to only tackle small independent projects where he was in full control. He initially turned back to horror films, which earned him a lot of criticism after films like Starman and Big Trouble .
  • The music of John Carpenter has cost more than his film Halloween - The night of horror in general.
  • In the United States, the film was also distributed under the title John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China .
  • Rumor has it that Big Trouble in Little China was originally planned as a sequel to the Buckaroo Banzai movie . However, this is not the case.

Cultural influence

The characters Lo Pan and his main henchmen, the Three Storms, enjoyed great popularity in America despite the general failure of the film. James Hong played the role of Lo Pan (or characters he inspired) in the science fiction series The Chronicles (episode: Here There Be Dragons , 2001) and the NBC series Chuck ( Chuck Versus the Sizzling Shrimp ). Incarnations of Lo Pan also appear in the computer games Fallout 2 and Master of Magic , and the character Raiden from the Mortal Kombat series is said to have been inspired by storm Lightning.

Important parts of the film plot as well as adaptations by Lo Pan and his servants, the Three Storms, were incorporated into the episode A Chinatown Ghost Story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animation series . The Chinese actor James Hong , who plays the role of Lo Pan in the film, also takes on the role of the main villain in the original.
