history

The place was first mentioned by name in 1380 as "Pyrkich". The place name is derived from the field name of the same name. This consists of the defining word birch and the appended collective suffix -ich and means birch forest. In 1579 the place was called "Birkaw", from which the colloquial form "Birga" is derived. The form "Bürkach" is documented for the year 1732. Both forms are misinterpretations of the original place name, because the suffixes –aw and –ach actually refer to bodies of water.

Towards the end of the 18th century there were four properties in Birkach (2 half courtyards, 1 three-quarter courtyard, 1 Köblergut ), a community shepherd's house and a chapel. The high court exercised the Brandenburg-Ansbach Hofkastenamt Ansbach . The village and community rulership was held by the Eichstättische Vogtamt Lehrberg . All properties had the Herrieden provost's office as landlord . From 1797 to 1808 the place was under the judiciary and chamber office of Ansbach .

As part of the community edict, Birkach was assigned to the Obersulzbach tax district, which was formed in 1808 . It also belonged to the rural community of Obersulzbach, founded in 1811 . In the course of the regional reform in Bavaria , this was incorporated into Lehrberg on May 1, 1978.
