The Lake Constance Path is a project of the International Lake Constance Conference (IBK) founded in 1972 . Their aim is to maintain and promote the Lake Constance region as an attractive natural, living and economic area and to strengthen regional solidarity.
Since 1999, the Lake Constance Path has been a new destination for well- traveled promenades and scenic sections of the approximately 300-kilometer Lake Constance circular route . Cyclists, walkers and hikers are provided with information on local and natural sights on Lake Constance on around 200 boards along the way.

Panel

The more than 200 information boards are based on a uniform appearance: simple and short texts, simplified images of animals and plants that are native to Lake Constance, question fields, photos and pictograms arouse the interest of the viewer. The boards want to inform and not teach.

Sections of the Lake Constance Trail

Germany

Lindau

In Lindau , information is provided at seven stations about the Lindenhof Park with a villa in the Schachen district , the history of shipping on Lake Constance and the 8,000-10,000 water birds that winter here in the Schachen Bay. The winter guests such as eider ( Somateria mollissima ), heron ( Aythya fuligula ), shell ( Bucephala clangula ) or pochard ( Aythya ferina ) come from Scandinavia , the Baltic States or western Siberia . Similarly, the driftwood received: Just the Rhine , the largest tributary of Lake Constance, the lake leads 230 per second cubic meters (m³) of water per year 2.8 million cubic meters of driftwood and sediments; this amount would be enough to fill a freight train the length of Bregenz - Gibraltar !

Moated castle

Orchard meadow
At the NSG Mittelseemoos

The three nature reserves , parts of the European network of protected areas Natura 2000 designated Wasserburger shore of Lake Constance and the habitat trail Birkenried are connected by eight stations of the Bodensee path.

reed

Reeds are diverse plants: They serve as food, natural sewage treatment plants, create bank and privacy protection, breeding and wintering areas. "Every part of the reed plant is used, whether above or under water!" Thus, the information panel describes the various creatures in the reeds, such as the barn swallow , the reed sac spider , the reed beetle , the reed bunting , the great crested grebe , the Cyclops or midge larvae .

The orchard meadow

The information board " Streuobstwiese " is on the road to Hengnau . Orchard meadows shape the landscape in the Lake Constance area. They are treated gently, and that is why up to 6,000 animal and plant species live in them! A few years ago, new plantings were made at the location of the panel.

Mittelseemoos nature reserve

Information on the Mittelseemoos nature reserve is available just below the orchard meadow, directly at the hiking car park . It is one of the most species-rich flat moors in the Lindau district . Formed by the Wurm Age 15,000 years ago originated in this landscape moraine , which silted up over time and became a bog. Due to the one-time annual mowing in September, the area does not become bushy and the biodiversity is preserved. Careful observers discover here between broadleaf cotton grass , Marsh Helleborine or Typha Shuttleworthii a Phengaris Alcon , a red-backed shrike , a swamp darter or a marsh warbler .

Birkenried biotope nature trail

Nine stations provide the visitor to the educational trail established in 1996 in Birkenried , the name is derived from “ clearing of a birch forest ”, information on tall herbaceous corridors , pools , dead wood , nesting aids for insects , the Eschbach flowing through the area with oxbows, willow bushes , piles of stones and Benjes hedge .
In Birkenried many bird and dragonfly species, for example, reed warbler and common darter , are observed.

Kressbronn / Langenargen

The bad
Information board "Habitat Water" on the Argen

The boards of the Lake Constance path along the Argen , the third largest tributary of Lake Constance, explain at four points how a river can be tamed without restricting its diversity of life. For centuries the Argen could freely choose its course. After 1800, their bed began to be dammed. This measure led to lower groundwater levels and a higher gradient. An attempt was made to counteract the negative developments by installing thirty wooden sleepers between Gießenbrücke and the estuary. These sleepers were replaced by three large concrete sleepers after the Second World War ; the evil could no longer be overcome for its residents. When the sleepers had to be refurbished in the mid-1980s, the Baden-Württemberg state government decided to convert them into block-stone ramps. From 1993 to 1997 the concrete sleepers were replaced by block stone ramps for 3 million DM on behalf of the water management administration. The lake trout ( Salmo trutta lacustris ), for example, was able to return to their spawning grounds through the dismantling of the weirs 22, 25 and 28 , but smaller aquatic inhabitants such as river flay crabs and bullheads ( Cottus gobio ) can also wander through the combined Argen again.

Langenargen

The twelve stations in Langenargen are all close to the shore. They go into the plants and animals of the shallow water zone and the city park as well as the city history and the tourism of the community between the mouth of the Argen in the east and the mouth of the Schussen in the west. The most striking building is the Montfort Castle , once planned under the name Villa Argena , if it was intended to serve as a pleasure palace for King Wilhelm I of Württemberg .

Argenpfad Langenargen
Argenpfad: "Streuobstwiese"

At the Malerecke , which is also the most easterly of the Langenargen Bodenseepfad stations, the 5.5 km long Argenpfad Langenargen begins . It was proposed by citizens of Langenargen as part of the citizens ' forum on the local Agenda 21 and leads through the Argenaue , along the Argen, the Mühlkanal and through orchards to the Karge mill . The nine stations provide information about littered meadows, wetlands, orchard meadows, the Argen Valley, water quality determination , the history of fruit growing, flowing waters , the alluvial forest and the birds on the Argen.

Eriskirch

In Eriskirch , a four-kilometer circular path leads from the nature conservation center in the train station to the lake and along the Schussen back to the village. The 14 information boards deal with a variety of topics such as the function of a sewage treatment plant , winter and summer guests at the lake or hops and fruit growing . The walker learns that the fruit growers deliver their fruits to almost all European countries via the marketing companies . External identifying features are the quality markQuality mark of the state of Baden-Württemberg (QZBW) ” and the “ Obst vom Bodensee ” mark .

Eriskircher Ried
Information board "Auenwald"
Information board "Reeds"
Information board "Streuwiese"

With an area of 550 hectares, the Eriskircher Ried is the largest nature reserve on the northern shore of Lake Constance. The first stretch of the Lake Constance Trail was set up here in 1997. Thirteen stations and two viewing platforms bring visitors closer to the animals and plants of the reed and the offshore shallow water zone. The distribution of different plant and animal communities is shaped above all by the altitude above the mean water of Lake Constance and the associated different lengths of flooding during floods . Today we distinguish four habitats:

  • The backwater
By their very nature, Schussen and Rotach did not flow straight to Lake Constance, but formed numerous loops of the river. These were straightened by humans at the beginning of the 20th century and cut off when they were shot. The so-called still water or oxbow lake emerged , habitat for sandpipers and other snipe birds .
  • The alluvial forest
Alluvial forests are azonal forest communities that are strongly influenced by flooding and high groundwater levels . Here you can see great crested grebes , kingfisher , tree falcon , green woodpecker and oriole between pedunculate oak , white willow and black alder .
  • The litter meadow
Litter meadows are among the most valuable biotopes today . The meadows near the lake in Eriskircher Ried are flooded for weeks almost every year so that they could not be used as fodder meadows; they were mowed in the winter half of the year, and the mowing material was used as litter (from which the name "litter meadow" is derived) in stables. Today the litter meadows are the habitat for the Siberian iris ( Iris sibirica ), the yellow iris , the purple loosestrife , grass snake ( Natrix natrix ) and wasp spider , which are so typical of Eriskirch .
  • The reeds
The reeds and reeds , which are flooded in summer, are very flat and fall up to a kilometer out, are the nurseries of fish and water birds. Nutrients, light and heat promote plant growth here, so this shallow water zone is the most productive area of the whole lake. When the water is low, large areas of mud emerge, which are valuable resting places for curlews and other waders . Common tern , black kite , mute swan , black-headed gull and gray heron are among the summer guests, while in winter the cormorant , dunlin , curlew , lapwing , whooper swan , goosander and common gull can be seen. So far, 412 bird species have been recorded at Lake Constance!

Friedrichshafen

The section in Friedrichshafen - from the mouth of the Rotach in the east to the castle church in the west - forms the most varied and longest part of the Lake Constance trail. At 22 stations, the city's history, bird migration , exotic plants in the city garden and weather phenomena are discussed.

Clumps

In Kluftern , around eight kilometers north-west of Friedrichshafen city center, the natural history and settlement history of this second largest district of Friedrichshafen is described on seven boards along the local circuit. The occasion was an approximately 7000 year old, semi-fossil ash trunk that was found during construction work for the renaturation of the Brunnisach . The Brunnisach flowed in a straightened stream bed for almost a hundred years. By restoring near-natural habitats, new raw soil areas and ponds were created . After the construction work was completed in March 2003, a plant cover was created within a few months with over one hundred species of raw soil pioneers such as the arable gauchheil , the arable horsetail , the small-flowered mullein , the purple willow , the celibate , the polygonal goose foot , the wild Teasel and the wild pansy . They were soon followed by the first animals, such as the golden hammer , the goldfinch , the banded demoiselle or the southern blue arrow .

Raderach

In the Raderach district there is a circular route with twelve stations. It connects the Hepbacher-Leimbacher Ried (see below) and the "Landwirtschaftspfad Friedrichshafen". The boards provide information about the formation and use of the post-glacial landscape.

Friedrichshafen / Markdorf / Oberteuringen

Hepbacher-Leimbacher Ried
Information board "White stork project"

The approximately 46 hectare Hepbacher-Leimbacher Ried is a nature reserve designated by the Tübingen regional council with a subsequent 67 hectare landscape protection area in the area of the cities of Friedrichshafen and Markdorf and the municipality of Oberteuringen . There are thirteen boards on the circular route that provide information on wetlands, forests, technical environmental protection and the formation of the landscape during the Ice Age. At the Weiherberg garbage dump station, for example, there is the opportunity to gain an insight into modern waste disposal by means of a tour that can be booked through the waste management office .

  • Observation hut: In summer 2001 an observation hut was built. Information boards explain, for example, the white stork project , nature conservation with international friends , the measures of the Interreg IIIA project and describe the Heck cattle that have settled here .

Immenstaad

Information board "Reeds" with a corresponding note

In the municipality of Immenstaad on Lake Constance , which was first mentioned in 1094 , fifteen boards provide information about life on and with the lake. The visitor receives information about the Lake Constance climate ("Lake Constance as a heat island"), plants and animals of the biotope forms " Bach ", reed beds, "Bridges on the Mühlbach", "Reed remediation at the Hardthof", "Water circulation and water stratification", "Natural gravel banks" or “the shallow water zone spoiled by the sun” and the relationship “fish and fisherman”.

Hagnau / Kirchberg

The three stations in Hagnau present typical plant communities in the nature reserve Bodenseeufer . The " Seehag " is discussed as well as the beach lawn with beach tears and beach lingerie.

Überlingen

In the Überlinger landscape park “St. Leonhard ”, a local recreation area on the city limits, there are four stations with beautiful viewpoints. The boards placed there answer the questions: "What is a cultural landscape?" Or "Where does our grain come from?"
