action

Friends since high school, Doug Madsen, Woody Stevens, Bobby Davis and Dudley Frank live in suburban Cincinnati . Woody, formerly a successful businessman, is broke and his wife, a bikini model, has left him. Doug, a dentist, struggles to communicate with his son and throws himself into work in frustration. Dudley, a shy programmer, longs for a wife and Bobby, a plumber, feels patronized by his dominant wife and a henpecked man towards his children.

To escape from everyday frustration and their midlife crisis , the four friends go on a motorcycle tour. The trip on their motorcycles, with which they regularly went on small trips to their hometown as Wild Hogs in their spare time , should last a week and lead to the west coast.

After a few minor inconveniences, such as a burned down tent and a pushy homosexual cop, they arrive at a biker bar in New Mexico . They want to rest there, but quickly get into an argument with the local gang, the Del Fuegos, under the leadership of the rough-hewn Jack. They insult the four and Jack takes Dudley's motorcycle. Buckled, the friends start their journey home eastwards, as they have been ordered, Dudley now in a rusty sidecar that was bolted to Woody's motorcycle. But shortly thereafter, Woody began to resist. Angry, he decides, against the advice of his friends, to get the stolen motorcycle back. To do this, he sneaks around the bar and uses a pair of pliers to cut the fuel lines of all motorcycles parked in front of the bar to make a pursuit impossible. Fortunately, the key is still on Dudley's motorcycle, with which he proudly returns to his friends. However, he does not tell them what he really did, but claims to have spoken a serious word with the bikers and threatened them with a lawsuit. The four friends now resume their journey and pull past the bar and the bikers standing there with provocative gestures. When the bikers want to take up the chase, they fail because of the severed lines and the leaked gasoline. The angry Jack drops the lit cigarette from his mouth and ignites the spilled gasoline, whereupon the entire bar is destroyed in a huge explosion. Of the four Wild Hogs , Woody is the only one who notices when he looks in the rearview mirror.

After a while they reach the village of Madrid , where the Chili Festival is taking place. There Dudley falls in love with Maggie, the attractive diner owner , and wins her affection. The angry Del Fuegos seek revenge and Jack sends search parties in all directions to catch the destroyers of their bar. The four are finally discovered in Madrid by two scouts. After a short phone call, all 50 gang members come to the small town. They are already known there and feared for their rowdy and aggressive behavior. Woody, who had been nervous for a long time, now tells his three friends about the real events. The Del Fuegos threaten to burn the diner down if the four who are in hiding fail to present themselves. They take courage and a big fight ensues because they refuse to pay the required $ 50,000 "ransom". The courage of the four friends, who face the whole gang alone, impressed the whole village, which then took their side to chase the bikers away.

Finally, the biker legend Damien Blade arrives at the scene. He is also the owner of the exploded bar. Blade turns out to be the father of Jack and accuses Jack and his men of forgetting what really matters for bikers. Blade moves the gang to the trigger and admires the courage of the four friends. Since his bar, which he himself describes as a “bastard”, was insured for twice its value, he is not angry with the four of them because of her.

The four friends are celebrated as heroes in the village. Then Doug and Bobby's wives arrive. Doug gained the respect of his wife and son through his trip, and Bobby is reconciled with his wife to whom he initially lied about the trip. Dudley promises Maggie that he will be back. Then the friends drive on to the Pacific with their motorcycles.

During the end credits, the Del Fuegos can be seen getting a new bar from a TV show sponsored by the Wild Hogs . This program gives families who have lost their home in a stroke of fate a new place to stay. This and an annual supply of free beer donated by a brewery moves the otherwise tough guys to tears.

Reviews

  • The lexicon of international films judged: “Amusing, silly slapstick comedy about masculine self-discovery, youthful dreams and male myths, peppered with a number of parodistically processed film quotations, especially from the field of road movies. Quite entertaining as a journey through the realms of shallower humor. "
  • Stephen Hunter wrote in the Washington Post on March 2, 2007 that the film was "lame" and "stupid" than Ghost Rider and Number 23 . The gags are "pointless". The four main actors would develop neither a common “rhythm” nor “chemistry”. In the end, the film is a mild parody of the parody Three Amigos! .
  • Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone magazine on February 28, 2007 that the film tried all clichés (“no cliche goes unloved”). The jokes would "already die on the lips of the actors" and are difficult to digest.
  • Andreas Jaschke from Moviemaze thinks the film is a “hilarious farce ” and “nobody who wants to have a lot of fun should miss the film”. In addition, the actors would “play in a good mood, self-deprecatingly and wonderfully with their image”.
  • Michael Reisner from Moviegod said: "Born to be Wild - an entertaining comedy with a predominantly good-humored cast."
  • Cinema described the film as a formalistic "Hollywood slapstick with some good running gags, but stereotypical characters."
  • Christoph Petersen wrote at filmstarts.de : “'Born To Be Wild' babbles quietly and evenly in perfect Harley style, never really gets boring, but it never really knocks you off your feet. Without the star line-up, it would have only been enough for a nice DVD premiere. "
  • Birte Lüdeking said on Critic.de: “The story was staged by the less experienced director Walt Becker in such a mindless and fuel-efficient manner that a visit to the dentist promises more fun and adventure. The dentist profession is also used as a running gag: One of the four row house Easy-Riders pursues this profession - so he is not a serious doctor. End of the joke. "

background

  • The film grossed around $ 104 million in cinemas in the United States through March 18, 2007. It stayed in the American box office for a long time. Total played Born to be Wild worldwide over 238 million dollars.
  • The biker legend Damien Blade, who appears at the end of the film, is played by Peter Fonda , an allusion and homage to the cult film Easy Rider from 1969.
  • Paul Teutul Sr. , founder of Orange County Choppers and known from the American Chopper TV series , has a cameo appearance . He plays the bartender who serves the four friends a beer at the beginning of the film and makes fun of them with the crude words "Wild Hogs are not wanted here!" His son can also be seen for a few seconds.
  • There was also an alternative ending that can be seen on the DVD of the film. At this end, the homosexual policeman, played by John C. McGinley, has another appearance in which he first "flashes" the moving Wild Hogs with the radar gun and then happily follows them after them. According to the audio commentary, the director and screenwriter agreed that although it was a nice ending for the character, the audience wanted to see their heroes finally reach their destination, i.e. the Pacific.
  • The scene in the Del Fuegos ' bar , in which the friends at the table are harassed by the bikers, is improvised. John Travolta has an attitude and that stiff, intimidating look, alluding to Clint Eastwood in his western roles. The reactions of the other actors who did not expect this are also improvised.
  • Two songs by Bon Jovi appear in the film: Wanted Dead or Alive , when John Travolta steals the motorcycle from the Del Fuegos, and Lost Highway in the credits.
  • Almost the entire film was shot in New Mexico , including the beginning of the film in the city. If you take a closer look, you can see from the license plates in the film that it is Albuquerque .
  • The Hells Angels , a worldwide motorcycle club, filed a lawsuit against the Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group in 2006 because they believed that both the name and logo of their club were used in the film.
  • The show that is shown in the credits really exists; it's called Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Ty Pennington, who hosts it in the film, also hosts it in real life.
