Bright is an American fantasy - action film director and producer David Ayer from the year 2017. The film stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton The film was worldwide on Dec. 22, 2017 Netflix released.

action

In an alternative world, supernatural beings such as fairies, elves and orcs live in a confined space, but peacefully with humans. Daryl Ward, a human cop, is not really keen on his strange fellow citizens. He is particularly at war with the fairies who have taken up residence in the aviary in his front yard, because although they are only 20 cm tall, they can spit painful blue flames. Ward also has to go on duty with Nick Jakoby, who was assigned to him, the first orc cop. The last time she was out there, Jakoby had fetched something to eat while Ward was shot.

When they are called to a commotion in a house near downtown Los Angeles one night during what appears to be a routine operation, the two make a mysterious discovery. They arrest a young woman who has what they identify as an incredibly powerful wand, and it could wreak havoc if it falls into the wrong hands. In addition, the use of magic is illegal in their world, as it is with high-tech weapons. Nevertheless, there are the Brights, magicians living among them, who can use such wands in their everyday lives.

Actually, the wand belongs to the Inferni Leilah. The elf Tikka, who has taken the baton, needs the help of the two policemen to keep the baton away from her and to defend herself against dark figures who are after it. The existence of the wand does not remain a secret for long. The LAPD officers get caught in the crossfire and have to discover that even apparently good citizens of all species would walk over corpses to get hold of the staff.

occupation

Will Smith played Officer Daryl Ward, and Joel Edgerton played orc cop Nick Jakoby. Smith, who can feel his new colleagues in the film that he has against him prejudice, said of his role: "It was really great to play an African-American police officer who someone can face appear as racist." The film's title Bright refers on living things with the ability to use the wand. One of the main points in the film is the issue of racism, as Smith explained. His role was explicitly designed as a racist, and as a black he has never been on this side. Smith quoted his role as Officer Ward, who in the film told his colleague, the first of his species at the LAPD, that he didn't want orcs in his car.

Axel Weidemann from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung explains that in the film, discrimination against the black population in America is projected onto the orcs using a blow-and-hit method: “They wear baggy clothes, but listen to death metal instead of hip hop . The film is only interested in the everyday racism in Los Angeles, where orcs organize themselves in street gangs and the elves have their own district ("Elven District - Elves only") with gold-plated guard rails. "Benedikt Frank von der In response to the class differences shown in the film, Süddeutsche Zeitung explains that, as in reality, Los Angeles is also the capital of street gangs, and orcs are typically part of them and live in slums . The elves, on the other hand, in the classic fantasy noblemen of a romanticized Middle Ages, are now yuppies, bankers, chiceria and separate themselves in gated communities , so Frank continues.

Tikka, who wears the mighty wand in the film, is played by Lucy Fry . Édgar Ramírez can be seen in the film in the role of the elf Kandomere, who works in the magic department of the FBI. Happy Anderson plays one of his human colleagues in the role of Montehugh. Brad William Henke took on the role of Dorghu, the leader of the Fog Toothed Gang . Actress Noomi Rapace , who grew up in Iceland and plays the elf Leilah or Liela in the film, who tries to regain possession of the magic wand and is a shady character, said at the Comic Con in San Diego in July 2017 that she believed there one explained in the existence of elves and fairies, and also Ramírez, who grew up in Venezuela, said one believed in everything there.

Reviews

David Ayer at Comic-Con in San Diego (2017)

After the presentation of the first trailer in July 2017, Marc Röhlig from Bento noticed that one of the most appealing moments in the Harry Potter films had been the clash of magic and everyday life, an idea that Fantastic Beasts also play with. It is the same with Bright when he brings action and fantasy together. The film also raises questions about being different, social injustice and discrimination , according to Röhlig.

Benedikt Frank of the Süddeutsche Zeitung believes that director David Ayer , who has been experienced in cop films since Training Day but not in the fantasy genre, is able to merge the worlds that apparently do not match. Even if this works, Frank continues, the plot should hardly surprise anyone who knows both genres well. Frank sums up that the film is entertaining, but also less profound than one might expect given the subject of racial discrimination .

Axel Weidemann from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung explains that the plot of the film is straightforward, and Ayer has already placed more emphasis on ingredients than on the narrative in his action film Suicide Squad . Roman Vasyanov's camera , Weidemann continues, always keeps its distance from the characters: “Faces stay in the semi-darkness, as if it were the last chapter of Apocalypse Now . So there isn't much to see of acting over the entire 157 male minutes. Movement and effect are trumps. "

Oliver Kaever from Spiegel Online also criticizes the plot that takes place in one night. In view of the high-frequency cut sequences, the constant darkness ensures complete disorientation: "Even in the cinema, heaps of montage rubbish like these in many action films are a nuisance, on the smaller screen they simply cause nausea."
