Reichenbach Castle

The castle Reichenbach , general Schlössle called, is a Outbound hilltop castle in the district Reichenbach the municipality Westhausen in Ostalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The Burgstall is located about one kilometer south-southwest of the center of the eponymous village on a small protrusion on the northern slope of the Alb to the small valley bay of the short Jagst tributary Reichenbach at about 652.1  m above sea level. NN and thus about 150 meters above the village. About a kilometer and a quarter to the north-west of it, the Agnesburg stood on the distant slope of the pronounced Spur Böhler . Coming from this direction, the A 7 climbs from the Jagsttal through the Agnesburg tunnel to the Albhöhe and then runs past the castle grounds less than a kilometer after the tunnel exit close to the south.

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1240 in the property register of the Ellwangen monastery owned by the local nobleman Heinrich von Reichenbach and was further mentioned in 1260 with the monastery Mödingen and in 1283 with the monastery Kaisheim . From 1354 the documentary entries about the castle are lost. The "Schlössle" existed and inhabited around the same time as the Agnesburg, about one and a quarter kilometers away.

According to a legend, the last lord of the castle of the “Schlössle”, in contrast to the noble and benevolent “Maid Agnes” on the Agnesburg, should not have been charitable, but exploited and mistreated his Reichenbach subjects. Later they killed him, destroyed the castle and used it as building material.

description

The footprint of the castle complex was around 35 by 45 meters. This made it about a third larger than the Agnesburg.
