history

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Wellstein as a safeguard against the rule of the Limpurg taverns and was first mentioned in 1269 when a Walther Hack named himself after her, who had previously lived at the Lauterburg near Essingen . After 1351, Burg Wöllstein went, probably as a pledge, to Walther and Friedrich, Lords von Heinriet , who expanded the small rulership through acquisitions, and from 1373 to Ulrich Hagg and his brother Albert (different name spelling: Albrecht Hack von Wöllstein), the abbot of the Benedictine monastery Ellwangen , resigned. Ulrich sold his share to the abbey in 1374 for 4,000 hellers .

In 1377 the Abbey of Ellwangen transferred Wöllstein and the village of Abtsgmünd to Konrad von Hürnheim for 2000 guilders . After the end of the Ellwangen monastery in 1460, its feudal sovereignty, mentioned in 1397 and 1414, passed to the prince provost of Ellwangen . When the Lords of Hürnheim died out in 1585, Ellwangen moved into the fiefdom. In addition to the hamlet of Wöllstein, the village of Abtsgmünd and some farms also belonged to the castle. A Vogt, who was based in Wöllstein, was used for administration. In 1604 Arnold received from Wolfen Wöllstein as a personal asset in exchange for his castle in Heuchlingen .

The castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and demolished in 1700, with the exception of the chapel, where hermits lived from 1723 and which was restored in 1789.

The chapel, named today after the apostle James , is located on a pilgrimage route on the Way of St. James . The Catholic priest and artist winner bait adorned in 2002 her appearance with a representation of the Christian chickens wonder - Legend .
