The castle ruin Adlerstein , also called Alte Bürg or Altenstein , is the remainder of a spur castle on a steeply sloping 596.6  m above sea level. NHN high rock ledge southeast of the district Aicha of the municipality of Wellheim in the district of Eichstätt in Bavaria .

history

The name of the castle suggests that the predecessor castle of Wellheim Castle stood here.

The counts of Hirschberg and, after inheritance, Sophie von Oettingen are named as the owners of the castle, whose founding time is not known . In 1998 a Stephan Groß is mentioned about the "Old Castle" and a legend also tells of a knight named Groß .

Finds of pottery shards indicate that the castle rock was already inhabited in the Bronze Age .

From the former castle complex in front of a steep rock outcrop, only the remains of the foundations of a residential tower with a window and loopholes , an eight-meter-deep cave at the foot of the castle rock, as well as the access to the residential tower and the remains of a moat are visible.
