The Ettling castle ruins , also known as Oettling , are the ruins of a moated castle on an artificial island in the source pond of the Kelsbach spring, the re-emergence of the Upper Kelsbach , which mostly seeps away near Hagenstetten . It is located in the Ettling district of the Pförring market in the Eichstätt district in Bavaria .

In addition to Ettling Castle, there was another moated castle around 180 meters east of the castle ruins, it has only been preserved as a castle stable and is now largely built over. Whether it is at this earlier motte (moth) is a bailey acted Castle Ettling or a standalone castle is not known.

history

In 1090, the noble family of the Oetlingers was mentioned for the first time with the lead name Reginold, but it is not known whether the castle was built on them. From 1151 they are also named after the Reifenberg Castle near Ebermannstadt in Upper Franconia, they were patrons of the Schamhaupten Monastery and Truchsesse of the Rohr Monastery . This family died out with Reginold IV in 1190, he fell during the third crusade under the leadership of Friedrich Barbarossa before Adrianople .

In 1248 a Bavarian ministerial of the Counts of Vohburg or of the Niederalteich monastery was mentioned for the first time , who in 1270 was district judge in Vohburg an der Donau . The knight Konrad von Oettling also belonged to this family; in 1302 he probably had a relationship with Mechthild von Nassau, the wife of Duke Rudolf I the Stammler , who captured him at Schiltberg Castle and had him beheaded in Munich.

The Veste Oetling was owned by the Oettlingers until 1405, from 1415 it was the seat of Hans des Sandersdorf. Between 1418 and 1480, after being sold, the castle was owned by Hans Laiminger; in 1490, by marriage or inheritance, it was owned by the Schmiechen von Wackerstein; in 1469 they also acquired Wackerstein Castle .

In 1534 she came to the Notthaft zu Wernberg , in 1729 then to the Electorate of Bavaria. In 1568 the castle was probably still intact, after which it was abandoned and then fell into disrepair.

Today the castle ruins are listed as a monument D-1-76-153-29 “Former moated castle Oettling, parts of the palace and the ring walls, mentioned for the first time in 1403, late medieval; Parts of the former St. Peter's Castle Chapel, at the same time; located on the Kelsbach ”and recorded as a ground monument D-1-7135-0182“ Underground medieval and modern parts in the area of the Ettling castle ruins ”by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . In 1982 an information board was put up.

Gate construction with segment arch
Remains of the castle wall

The square, fort-like scale Wasserburg is located between two river arms just below the source area of the Kelsbaches. This area, fed by five strong springs, was probably dammed into a small lake in the past and thus protected the castle complex. From the Wasserburg up with who rubble masonry built ruins of six to eight meters high Beringe, the main residential building with a vaulted cellar, a Torbaues with segmental arch and the former chapel of St. Peter received.
