Candace Owens 2018

Candace Owens (born April 29, 1989 in Stamford , Connecticut , USA ) is an American activist and political commentator who belongs to the right-wing conservative spectrum. She became known for her criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement and her position that the African American population of the United States should turn away from the Democratic Party . She is a supporter of US President Trump and was responsible for communications for the right-wing organization Turning Point USA from 2017 to 2019 .

Life

Candace Owens grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, where she was raised from her grandparents after her parents divorced. During her senior year of high school in 2007, she received racist phone calls, including death threats, which could be traced back to a car in which the mayor's son was present. Owens' family sued the school authorities for failure to protect their rights, and they were awarded $ 37,500 in damages.

Owens studied journalism at the University of Rhode Island , but left the university after the penultimate year. She then worked for Vogue magazine and, from 2012, for four years at a private equity company .

2016 Owens made the site SocialAutopsy.com publicly about the cyber bullying should be addressed by the authors of abusive or threatening messages are traced. Owens started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.com for the project, but it quickly sparked controversy. People verschiedenster political groups argued that SocialAutopsy.com about Doxing their users from privacy violated. Critics of the site published Owens' private information, for which Owens blamed the left-wing people who were simultaneously involved in the GamerGate controversy over sexism in video games . This in turn earned her support from its conservative opponents, including Milo Yiannopoulous and Mike Cernovich , two far-right political commentators. This influenced Owens to turn to the conservatives himself. Ultimately, Kickstarter put out the crowdfunding campaign, and SocialAutopsy.com never got its proper purpose.

In 2017 Owens began posting videos on her YouTube channel Red Pill Black criticizing liberals and leftists and promoting African American conservatism. “ Taking the red pill ” is a metaphor popular with conservatives for rejecting left-wing narratives that they believed unquestioned. As a black woman who openly represents conservative views and supports President Trump, she had a unique selling point , which quickly made her notoriety in conservative circles. As early as November 21, 2017, the founder of the right-wing organization Turning Point USA Charlie Kirk announced , while the organization was faced with racism allegations, that Owen would become the head of urban engagement. From 2017 to May 2019 she was head of communication at the organization.

Owens became known to a wider audience when African-American rapper Kanye West announced on Twitter in April 2018 that he endorsed her views. In May 2018, US President Trump finally described her as a "very clever thinker" who had a "great influence" on US politics.

In October 2018 Owens initiated the Blexit campaign. Blexit is a suitcase word based on the term “ Brexit ”, made up of “ black ” (German: black) and “ exit ” (German: exit). The campaign aims to encourage African Americans to renounce the Democratic Party and instead register as Republicans . Owens announced that Kanye West has designed merchandise for the movement. West contradicted this, however; he did not want to be associated with Blexit and was used to spread messages he did not believe in. Owens then apologized to West. An analysis shows that Twitter accounts, which otherwise spread Russian propaganda , published 16% of all tweets about Blexit immediately after the campaign was announced .

Owens at the 2019 Young Black Leadership Summit at the White House with President Trump

On April 9, 2019, Owens testified on the House Judiciary Committee , a standing committee of the US House of Representatives, at the invitation of Republican politicians . The hearing discussed hate crime and the influence of white nationalists and their ideology in the United States. Owens called this topic setting, however, as misleading; In fact, the Democrats are only concerned with “ fear-mongering, power and control ” through the censorship of dissenting opinions. In particular, she caused a stir when the democratic politician Ted Lieu confronted her with a sound recording in which she played down Adolf Hitler .

Owens appeared as a commentator on the US television station Fox News and in the web show of InfoWars , an online portal for conspiracy theories . She has hosted the talk show The Candace Owens Show for the conservative organization Prager University since March 2019 .

In April 2020 Owens announced that he would seek political office in the future, either that of a governor or a senator .

Owens married George Farmer, a British hedge fund manager and head of Turning Point UK , on August 31, 2019 in Charlottesville , Virginia .

Positions

Candace Owens at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference ( CPAC ) in National Harbor , Maryland

Owens says he was not interested in politics until 2015. In a column on her now-abandoned blog Degree180 , she spoke out against the conservative politicians of the tea party movement in 2015 . In guest posts on her blog, Donald Trump was scorned during the presidential campaign.

Owens only gained popularity when she abandoned these positions and celebrated her “coming out” as a conservative in a video published on Youtube in July 2017 . Since then she has marketed herself as a conservative supporter of US President Trump, whom she described, among other things, as the "savior" of the western world. She confessed that she had never voted before, but that she voted as a registered Republican for the first time in the 2018 mid- term elections .

Overall, Owens is classified as ultra-conservative, far right or even as a representative of the Alt-Right , although she rejects the latter terms for herself.

African American population of the USA

The main theme of Owens' activism is the African American population in the United States. According to Owens has in this a "slave mentality" or "victim mentality" emerged that of the Democratic Party , which Owens as "plantation" ( " plantation will, exploited" hereinafter). Instead of focusing on the future, blacks would focus too much on past slavery . The Democratic Party would create and perpetuate the myth that Republicans are racist towards blacks , thereby " brainwashing " African American voters into a majority vote for Democrats.

In fact, the democratic party was historically the more racist of the two parties. The fact that the US black population is economically worse off than it was in the 1950s under the Jim Crow laws - a claim by Owens that has been questioned - is due to the fact that they have consistently voted for Democrats since then. The increasing number of elected Afro-American politicians does not advance the concerns of blacks either.

In her hearing before the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives, Owens described the so-called Southern Strategy (German: southern states strategy) as a "myth". She denied the fact that after the civil rights movement of the 1960s , the Republican party had specifically appealed to the racist attitudes of many white Democratic voters in the southern states in order to win their approval.

In particular, the Black Lives Matter movement, which campaigns against police violence against blacks, is an association of "tearful toddlers" who only pretend to be suppressed in order to get attention. In fact, police violence is only a minor issue for African Americans these days. After the African-American George Floyd was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis in May 2020 and there were subsequently national protests against racially motivated police violence, she agreed in an interview with Glenn Beck that the police officer had acted unjustifiably and not should have been killed. However, according to her, the victim should not be celebrated as a martyr (" The fact that he has been held up as a martyr sickens me. "); because of his previous prison sentence, it was apparent that he was “not a good person” (“ George Floyd was not a good person ”). The interview was then retweeted by US President Trump. In a tweet she also blamed the philanthropist George Soros and the Open Society Foundation he founded for the protests; she claimed he was paying the Minneapolis protesters. She also posted a 17-minute video on Twitter summarizing her views on the George Floyd case and generating millions of views. Among other things, she takes the position that the African American community is the only one that demands support even for those individuals who do not lead a righteous life (" But we are unique in that we are the only people that fight and scream and demand support for the people in our community that are up to no good. "). Owens started an online fundraiser for a cafe owner who was derogatory and boycotted George Floyd ; However, the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe stopped the fundraising campaign because support for intolerance is not tolerated on the website.

Although relatives receive social benefits from her, Owens advocates their abolition. In an argument with Cornel West , De Owens argued that the first hundred years after the abolition of slavery was better off for the US black population than ever later. Socialism and the associated welfare state offers were to blame for the subsequent decline .

Feminism, Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, and Transgender Issues

Owens is critical of feminism . In particular, she criticized the MeToo movement , which is directed against sexualized violence , because, according to her, it conveys the image that women are “stupid, weak and inconsistent”.

She speaks out against abortion and compares it to murder . She also accuses Planned Parenthood , an organization that offers abortions in the USA, among other things, of pursuing the racist goal of reducing the birth rate of the African American population through a disproportionately high number of abortions among black women .

She also caused a stir when she suggested, with a view to the Trump-critical comedians Sarah Silverman , Kathy Griffin and Chelsea Handler , that it has "bio-chemical" effects if a woman remains unmarried and childless .

Owens advocates same-sex marriage .

After US President Trump signed a memorandum that transgender people should no longer do military service, Owens agreed that trans people who are in transition should not serve. She thinks trans women are mentally ill men.

immigration

Owens speaks out against open borders and in favor of the border wall planned by President Trump on the border with Mexico . In August 2018, she referred to the slain Mollie Tibbetts, who was allegedly murdered by an illegal migrant worker, and accused the Democrats of sacrificing lives to win votes for the open borders policy. Tibbetts' cousin then criticized her for exploiting Mollie Tibbett's death for political propaganda, and a local group from Turning Point USA also reprimanded her for molesting the family of those killed.

In September 2018 Owens posted a video of herself visiting a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) transit center in Florida . In it, she praised the way the migrants are treated there, especially the children, who are better off than many American children in Chicago , Detroit or Baltimore . The immigration centers are also better equipped than the state schools that she attended herself. Owens turned against the criticism that was raised against these centers, especially against the placement of children, in the summer of 2018.

Nationalism, globalism and the controversy surrounding Hitler's commentary

At a Turning Point USA event in December 2018, Owen said that she had no problem with the term " nationalism ", after all, she did not want the opposite, globalism . The term "nationalism" has only been poisoned by elites who pursue a globalist agenda. Nationalism is always associated with Adolf Hitler in the USA . According to Owens, it would have been okay for Hitler to be a National Socialist if he had focused on making Germany great (" make Germany great "). The only problem Hitler had was that he wanted to enforce his ideas outside of Germany, to “globalize” them.

Owens' comments received immense criticism from journalists and Chelsea Clinton , among others . She accused left-wing journalists of reading her statements out of context, but also added that Hitler was a “murderous, psychotic madman” and that there was no excuse for what he had done.

In April 2019, Democratic MP for the House of Representatives Ted Lieu played a sound recording of Owens' comments on Hitler at a judicial committee hearing she was invited to attend. He asked the representative of the Anti-Defamation League , an organization that campaigns against anti-Semitism , who was also present , whether Owens' justification of Hitler was not exactly promoting white nationalism, the fight against which was to be the subject of the hearing. This was answered in the affirmative. Owens then accused Ted Lieu of assuming that “all black people are stupid and will not listen to the recording in full” (“ I think it's pretty apparent that Mr. Lieu believes that black people are stupid and will not pursue the full clip in its entirety "). Lieu reported her statements without context in order to create a false narrative.

Climate change

Owens doesn't believe in man-made climate change . According to her, climate change is a lie that was invented to "take dollars off Americans", which is why the US exit from the Paris Agreement was correct.

Firearms

Owens is a registered member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the firearms lobby group, and considers it the oldest civil rights organization in the United States, having taught African Americans to use guns to defend themselves against the Ku Klux Klan in the 1960s . The latter has been contradicted in several publications.

Mentioned in the Christchurch assassin's manifesto

The extreme right-wing terrorist Brenton Tarrant, one on March 15, 2019 attack on two mosques in Christchurch ( New Zealand committed) with at least 50 fatalities, called Owens in his manifesto as the person who most it radicalized have. In particular, it had strengthened his belief in the importance of violence. Owen tweeted in response to the manifesto leaking that she had never produced any content expressing her opinion on Islam or on the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution on the carrying of firearms. That the political left accuse it of having inspired the attack on the mosques is therefore absurd. It also announced that it would respond to such allegations by the media with complaints.
