The Cher [ ʃɛr ] is a river in France that runs through the regions of Nouvelle-Aquitaine , Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Center-Val de Loire . Its source is located in the municipality of Mérinchal , at about 715 meters above sea level. The river first drains north, then turns west and flows into the Loire as a left tributary after around 365 kilometers in the municipal area of Villandry , around 20 kilometers west of Tours , in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park .

In the section between Saint-Aignan and Tours, the Cher is canalised, has locks and is therefore suitable for navigation. The sooner the southeast as a side channel further Canal de Berry is no longer in operation.
