Monthey is a political municipality , a civil parish and capital of the district of the same name in the canton of Valais in Switzerland . The municipality is located on the Vièze river , which flows into the Rhone here , and is part of the Swiss part of the Chablais landscape .

geography

Monthey is located on the Rhone , which is the municipality boundary in the northeast and the border with the canton of Vaud , between Lake Geneva and Martigny . The neighboring municipalities are Collombey-Muraz , Troistorrents , Vérossaz , Massongex , Bex , Ollon . An exclave of Monthey is located around 10 km southwest of the city center. This uppermost part of the Val de Morgins borders the municipalities of Troistorrents and Val-d'Illiez as well as France. The highest point of Monthey is in this exclave, Pointe de Chésery at 2249 m above sea level. M. Monthey has four other exclaves within the parish of Collombey-Muraz. The lowest point is the Rhône at 390 m above sea level. M.

history

The city had been under the rule of the House of Savoy since the 11th century and was administered by victumen and house warriors . From 1536 to 1798 Oberwalliser land bailiffs ruled.

economy

Monthey is an important industrial location in the canton of Valais. There are many chemical plants : the most important are BASF , Syngenta and Cimo, a joint venture of the first two companies. The mechanical engineering company Giovanola had to give up in 2004 due to insolvency . The engineering company Bolliger & Mabillard designs roller coasters around the world . The Satom SA waste incineration plant is also located in Monthey . An oil refinery in neighboring Collombey was closed in 2015.

traffic

The A9 motorway , the St. Maurice - Saint Gingolph SBB line and the Chemin de fer Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry ( AOMC ) narrow-gauge railway pass through Monthey. The nearby “ Portes du Soleil ” ski area can be reached in about 30–45 minutes by AOMC trains or by car .

The sporting figurehead of the city is the 2-time basketball champion, the BBC Monthey .

Culture

Monthey is known throughout Switzerland for its carnival , which is one of the largest regional events after the activities in Basel and Lucerne and attracts Guggen music from all cantons every year.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Immaculée-Conception is a classicist, three-aisled basilica with a gable -topped portico , which was built by Emile Vuilloud from 1851 to 1855 . The decor and furniture date from the 19th to 20th centuries.

On the Rue du Château is the New Castle , which was first mentioned in the 15th century and built from scratch by the Upper Valais bailiffs in 1663–1664. The building, which includes a medieval tower, consists of three wings around an arcaded courtyard.

The armory , a former tower from the Middle Ages that was remodeled in the 17th century, can be found on Rue de Bourg-aux-Favres.

On the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville is the baroque chapel Notre-Dame-du-Pont , a building with an oval floor plan with a vestibule that was rebuilt in 1775. Inside there is a rococo altar with Pietà from the 15th century.

A covered wooden bridge from 1809 crosses the Vièze river.

On the right bridgehead you can see the figure “Unleashed Vièze”, created in 1917 by the sculptor J. Casanova .

The Delacoste house , which was built in the 17th century for Bishop Hildebrand Jost over a former fortification, stands on Rue du Commerce.

Le Crochetan at 10–12 avenue du Crochetan is a former fortification that was owned by the Du Fay family until 1875. The curtain wall with two corner towers and a gate with a weir bay are preserved from the medieval building . The residential wing dates from 1734.

One of the largest glacier boulders in Switzerland, the Pierre des Marmettes, can be found in Monthey . The mighty stone and the many other boulders on the western mountain slope, which come from the old lateral moraine of the Rhone glacier, give a good picture of the dimensions of the glacier in the last ice age, they are therefore in the federal inventory of landscapes and natural objects of national importance with the Part number 1709.
