The Chongoyape district is located in the Chiclayo province in the Lambayeque region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on July 30, 1840. It extends over an area of ​​712 km². The 2017 census counted 18,364 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 17,324, in 2007 17,540. The district administration is located in the small town of Chongoyape, 209  m high, with 7842 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chongoyape is located about 50 km east-northeast of the regional and provincial capital Chiclayo .

Geographical location

The district of Chongoyape is located in the northeast of the province of Chiclayo. It extends over the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera on both sides of the westward flowing Río Chancay . The mountains and mountain slopes are covered with desert and steppe vegetation. In the west of the district, on the northern slope of the valley, there is the Tinajones reservoir , which is around 16 km² in size . Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the valleys along the Río Chancay.

The district of Chongoyape borders in the southeast on the district Oyotún , in the south with the district Pucalá , in the west with the districts Pátapo and Manuel Antonio Mesones Muro ( province Ferreñafe ), in the north with the Pítipo (also in the province Ferreñafe) and in the east the districts of Tocmoche , Miracosta and Llama (all three in the province of Chota , region of Cajamarca ).
