Clever & Smart (in the original: Mortadelo y Filemón ) is a comic series by the Spanish comic artist Francisco Ibáñez , which has existed since 1958. The title names the two main characters. Both are agents of the TIA (Trans-Internationaler Agentenring) . In the original, this abbreviation stands for Técnicos de Investigación Aeroterráquea . The term tía sounds similar to CIA , but means aunt in Spanish or, colloquially, something like chick or old woman .

The first comic appeared on January 20, 1958 in issue 1394 of the weekly magazine Pulgarcito under the general title Mortadelo y Filemón, agencia de información .

In Germany, the adventures were released as albums by Condor from 1972 and by ConPart Verlag until 2012 . In parallel, the heroes also appeared in the Felix comic books between 1975 and 1981 , where they were in the service of the Organization for Master Agents (OMA) under the name Flip & Flap . The OMA was also used in the albums, but there as an organization of agents hungry for power and as an opponent to Clever and Smart.

Clever & Smart have been published by Carlsen Verlag since 2018 .

main characters

Since 1958 (comic strip)

  • Fred Clever ( Mortadelo in the Spanish original, Flip in the Felix booklet)
is a tall, slender agent with a big nose. Fred Clever is completely bald, wears glasses ("little bike on his nose") and is usually dressed in a black suit (a sign of mourning for his lush mane of hair, which he lost at a previous job at Dr. Bakterius) with a stiff collar . In the beginning, a black umbrella hung from his arm. At that time he also wore a hat, from which he also pulled out his disguises. To deceive everything and everyone - or when special skills are required, e.g. B. for a quick escape - he disguises himself constantly, often appropriate to the context of the content. Its metamorphoses include all possible and impossible living beings, objects, and even abstract things, from donkeys to bells to an entire universe. The only features of his appearance that Clever retains in every transformation are his glasses and, in the majority of cases, the nose and the stand-up collar. He is also constantly at odds with the chief secretary, Miss Ophelia, who tries to marry him at the beginning of the series. In the Spanish original, Fred Clever is called “Mortadelo”, an allusion to the Italian sausage variety Mortadella . Fred comes from the village of Ziegenhausen and therefore usually does not know his way around "fine society" and behaves like a peasant idiot.
  • Jeff Smart ( Filemón Pi in the original, Flap in the Felix book)
is smaller than Clever and in the original his boss (span. jefe = boss, boss, superior). He has two hairs on his head and dresses in a white shirt, black bow tie and red trousers. In contrast to Fred Clever, Jeff Smart experienced several graphic developments in the early years. In the beginning he also smoked a pipe similar to that of Sherlock Holmes . He also occasionally wears a jacket or hat. He's the one who usually takes the blows when something goes bad (almost always), and he's also most likely to let his frustration off on others, especially his partner Fred, by throwing the most adventurous things at him or makes him suffer or wants to make him suffer physically in one way or another.

Introduced with the albums (from 1969)

  • Mister L ( El Súper or Superintendente Vicente in the original, Mister Knacks in the Felix booklet)
is the chief commissioner (or president) of the TIA and commissions Fred Clever and Jeff Smart. He dresses in a blue suit and has a mustache. He too is often insulted by Messrs Clever & Smart during his (sometimes only presumed) absence. For example, he is often compared to a walrus because of his beard and his nose is like a cucumber. As a result of such cheek, Mister L often lets out his choleric temperament on the two of them. But since he often enough does not think through his assignments for his subordinates to the end, Mister L is often the target of angry persecutors from within his own ranks.
  • Dr. Bacterius ( Profesor Bacterio in the original)
is the mad scientist . He has a full black beard and is bald too. Bacterius creates the most impossible inventions, most of which cause the opposite of what is required. The other characters grab him with blind fury when one of his inventions comes to a bad end. Besides Ophelia, he is Fred's intimate enemy, who especially likes to set his beard on fire. He is also responsible for Fred Clever's bald head, as he tried a means of maintaining the head of hair on him.
  • Miss Ophelia (from 1978; Ofelia in the original)
is tall, corpulent and a self-assured secretary. She is in love with Fred Clever, but he refuses any advances. She is often in a bad mood because of the disregard and mockery by Fred Clever and Jeff Smart and returns these behaviors with violence. It offers both Mister L and Dr. Bacterius forehead. Fred Clever likes to launch figure-hugging slogans near her or alludes to her excess weight.
  • Miss Tussy (from 1987; Irma in the original)
very pretty, slim secretary who is adored by Clever and Smart and hated by Ophelia. Also flirts with these sometimes, but seems to be out of reach. This could mainly be due to the fact that Clever and Smart do everything to impress her, which also always ends in one of the typical - not very impressive - disasters. Out of frustration, they sometimes let loose all sorts of slogans (“Did you have 100 grams of birdseed for lunch again?”).
  • More figures that appear sometimes
    • The Minister (no name in the original) - Mister L's superior (“Yes, Mr. Minister, yes, Mr. Minister, of course, Mr. Minister!”). Although he ends up firing Mr. L in many stories, the relationship seems to be good.
    • The wife of Mister L ( Señora Superintendente in the original, in German comics once Luise L , in another Missis L ).
    • Francisco Ibáñez (also in the original) - mostly as a draftsman and thus chief boss, who can redraw other people or scenes, or to get rid of comments. Sometimes he just makes a cameo .
    • unnamed beefy agent, sometimes Agent XXL ( Bestiájez in the original) - is used to bring clever and smart out of their hiding places if they refuse to take on a mission or have fled after its failure. Often Mister L does this together with the respective victim (s) of the last disaster.
    • Two men in white coats - bring one or more people to the institution in almost every issue.
    • A small man with enormous visual impairment (in some editions called Pupsie Blindfisch or Pupsie Blindmann , rompetechos in the original), whose nearsightedness often serves as a hook for gags. This character originally comes from the comic series 13, Rue del Percebe ( Eng . "Freaked Out - Fish Street 13"). This character later had its own comic series, which was published in Germany under the name "Norbert - the nerve bang", but without great success.
    • A senile lady who actually does harmless things, but confuses everything that smart and smart then have to suffer from. F. Ibáñez dedicated an entire album to her. In No. 38 the two are supposed to protect an old woman on a trip around the world, which the lady does not like.
    • Superman occasionally appears in the picture as a caricature or a side gag. Either he is portrayed as a snotty old man (an allusion to the transience of superheroes in America), or he is in the prime of his life and confuses the agent with a villain and tries to punish them, which he usually succeeds in doing. Sometimes it just appears as an embodied play on words in connection with Mister L's original name ( El Super ), which is not understandable in German, however.
  • Enemy secret services
    • OMA = Organization of Militant Agents / Organization of Agents Hungry for Power
    • Organization of Political Anarchists (also appears as "OPA = Organization of Pacifist Agents" as Clever and Smarts Secret Service)
    • OLA = organization for liquidating agents

Plot lines

Clever & Smart

Fred Clever and Jeff Smart are agents of the TIA and their boss, Mr. L, involves them in ever new hair-raising adventures, for example at soccer world championships , the Olympic Games or in the past.

Other employees of the TIA are Dr. Bacterius, whose ingenious inventions the agents often have to test, whereby malfunctions always become apparent, as well as the corpulent secretary Miss Ophelia, who considers herself an irresistible sex bomb, but always puts all men on the run.

The outstanding feature of this series are the many slapstick gags in which the protagonists are blown up countless times, cut into pieces, cliffs and in the next picture with huge bumps, but essentially unharmed , in the best Tom and Jerry style to stand up again. Another hallmark of head bruises are the sounds "Glglgl" and "Blep blep".

At the beginning of the booklet there is always a kind of introduction, in which Ibáñez prefers living politicians to appear. As a result, the two agents are always given an order on which they repeatedly fail, so they can try again. Running gags are above all Fred's unbelievable (useless) disguise skills, Jeff's outbursts of anger after another one of his plans went cruelly wrong by an insane coincidence, as well as several scenes per book in which the two of them after a very bad faux pas about the one in the newspapers reported to have to emigrate for a short time.

In the early issues in particular, one notices traits that are critical of the times and socially critical: Ibáñez got to know the Franco dictatorship personally. In the meantime that has lost a bit and the main focus has shifted even more to gags. Even so, it sometimes refers to real politics. In album no. 136, Fred Clever and Jeff Smart arrest Radovan Karadžić , who is now a mad paparazzo , and extradite him to the International Court of Justice in The Hague .

The lack of an arch enemy is also noteworthy. If Lucky Luke fights the Daltons at regular intervals, Asterix the Julius Caesar , the greatest archenemy of the two secret agents is their own ineptitude.

The image backgrounds, which often have small curiosities, are also part of the comic's shrill appearance. Be it a dinosaur biting off a skyscraper, be it a whale hopping through the city or the iconic Ibáñez spider (a black dot with six legs) hanging from its web from the ceiling and playing the violin. Every now and then there are even micro-stories about two or three pictures. Eggplants can sometimes be found in corners of a room; Eggplants often intervene in history, for example as a striking weapon, projectile or knotted into a hairstyle. Likewise, cigarette butts on floors are among the items that appear frequently.

The depiction of an airplane in the El 35 Aniversario (1993), which is smoking in one of the twin towers of the New York World Trade Center , attracted attention after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 .

Recovery

  • There are two different cartoon series , one of which is strongly oriented towards the albums and deals with the content of an album per episode, while the other series divides longer stories into short episodes. The second series (from 1994 on German television) was dubbed by Karl Dall (Fred Clever) and Wolfgang Völz (Jeff Smart) , among others . In this, the two agents are employed by the KGP (= Royal British Secret Police), not or just to be confused with the Soviet secret service KGB (title song: "… clever and olé, smart as ever, we are both the top Agents from the KGP ” ).
  • The characters from the comic series were also used in various computer games , namely an action adventure that appeared in 1988 and only had an unofficial successor in Spain in 1989, as well as a nine-part Spanish adventure series developed by Alcachofa Soft from 1997 onwards. The last part of the series appeared again improved under the title Clever & Smart - A Movie Adventure also in German and received mostly positive reviews.
  • In 2008, on the 50th anniversary of the comic book heroes, a second real film was released in Spain. The original title is: Mortadelo y Filemón. Misión: Salvar la Tierra (Clever & Smart - Mission: Save the World).
  • In 2014, a computer-animated film was released in Spain under the title Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo .

Publication in Germany

The publication history of Clever & Smart in Germany is quite chaotic. In the German-speaking area, 210 editions were published by Condor, although the original order was not adhered to and in some cases compilations of short stories were published. In December 2009 the series was discontinued at ConPart . Since issue 175, however, the publisher has only reissued old comic albums that had been renamed as “totally rewritten + currently forgotten!” . Previously, old comic albums had been renamed again and again since issue 143. Since no. 164 these can be recognized by the note "A CLASSIC HIT" .

Volumes were also re-published in two further editions under the original numbers. Since two late editions were left out in the 2nd edition due to missing print templates, five albums were released under three different numbers (e.g. album no.9 (1st to 3rd edition), album no.143 ( 1st edition) and album No. 142 (2nd edition) always around the same comic). However, the second edition was discontinued in 2004 after No. 147, the 3rd edition already in 1998 after No. 50. Thus, 19 albums have so far only appeared in the first edition, while the older editions have now been reissued for the fourth or fifth time were.

In addition, around 100 special volumes, extras, anniversary editions and paperbacks have been published in German. Special volumes are stories, mostly about sporting events, that were not published in the regular series. All anniversary editions and extra editions are collections of already published volumes, with no recognizable pattern.

On April 18, 2017, Carlsen Verlag announced that it would relocate Clever and Smart in albums. In contrast to Condor's, the Carlsen edition sticks to the original order, but the volumes on sporting events are omitted. A completely new coloring from Spain is used and the translation, which was in part very sloppy at Condor, is completely revised. Since February 2018, Clever and Smart albums have been available again in the German press trade from Carlsen Verlag. In addition to the new editions of the old albums, the latest Ibáñez stories are also published, outsourced as a special volume series. The short stories in the series will be published in an anthology.

The albums

Due to the enormous amount of comics and the fact that many of the stories in Germany were published several times, sometimes under different names, and the Condor-Verlag did not keep the correct order, this list is divided into decades and the correct order from Spain used. If an album has several names in Germany, this will also be noted. The current name is shown in italics.

1969-1979

No. Original title year German title Remarks
1 El Sulfato Atómico 1969 Don't worry, we will save the world (Condor, 7)
Spray and lightning - it will grow quickly! (Condor new text, 148)
Don't worry, we'll save the world (Carlsen, 1)
First story in full album length. Ibáñez uses drawings that are far more detailed than usual, something that he then only made for cover pictures due to lack of time. First appearance by Mr. L and Dr. Bacterius.
2 Against the "gang" from the "Chicharrón" 1969 We bring supplies for jail (Condor, 8)
We bring supplies for jail (Carlsen, 2)
The names of the chapters are all satirises on well-known proverbs and films, including Requiem for a Dream and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . The end with the crooks while knocking stones alludes to the end of the Lucky Luke story Dalton City .
3 Safari callejero 1970 The Asphalt Safari (Condor, 1)
The Asphalt Safari (Carlsen, 3)
The burglar at the beginning of the story is modeled on the burglar Elfenfinger-Freddie, who appears in Gaston . No coincidence, since Franquin Ibáñez serves as a role model.
4th Valor y… ¡al toro! 1970 Always trouble with the cop (Condor, 2)
Off to the fight, torero! (Carlsen, 4)
Ibáñez did not originally start this volume as Clever & Smart, but with other characters because he quarreled with the publisher. When an agreement was reached, Ibáñez pasted over the original characters on the original drawings on the first five pages.
5 El caso del bacalao 1970 Help, we're dying of thirst! (Condor, 3)
Help, we're dying of thirst! (Carlsen, 5)
Fred and Jeff try the carpet-pulling trick from Harry and Platte , but fail. In addition, Jeff makes the same mistake as Wile E. and tries to loosen stuck rubble from below.
6th Chapeau el "Esmirriau" 1971 We are always in business (Condor, 15)
with heart, pain and melon (Carlsen, 6)
The title of the Carlsen edition is an allusion to the series With Umbrella, Charm and Melon , which was being produced at the time the volume was written.
7th La máquina del cambiazo 1971 Always in the machine! (Condor, 9)
Always in the machine! (Carlsen, 7)
Due to a bad original from Spain - for whatever reason - the coloring here is much worse than in the other volumes of the Carlsen edition.
8th La caja de los diez cerrojos 1971 Damn it, who's opening the box? (Condor, 4)
Strong as a bear - these guys are tough as iron! (Condor new text, 162)
Damn it, who opens the box? (Carlsen, 8)
Here the gag is used for a panel that everything is upside down at the South Pole - including the text. Here, too, the names of the chapters are satirises, including Two Heavenly Dogs on the Way to Hell and Moonraker .
9 Magín el Mago 1971 Lazy magic with the eyes (Condor, 5)
Horror and fright - a man in black! (Condor new text 163)
Lazy magic with the eyes (Carlsen, 9)
For the first time in a volume, it offers a chapter where Clever and Smart do not harm themselves and - even if only unknowingly - only harm their opponent.
10 ¡A la caza del cuadro! 1971 Tell me where the pictures are (Condor, 6)
Life goes on - even without a ladder! (Condor new text, 165)
Tell me where the pictures are (Carlsen, 10)
After a cameo in a panel in the first volume, there is the first real appearance of rompet echoes , in which all consequences of his poor eyesight are shown (to Fred and Jeff's damage).
11 Los inventos del profesor Bacterio 1972 One puts the other in! (Condor, 10)
The inventions of Dr. Bacterius (Carlsen, 11)
The first volume in which Clever and Smart have to test a whole series of Bakterius inventions. Ibáñez took over the gag with the gasoline-powered elevator directly from Gaston . The killer crabs at the end allude to an old movie cliché.
12 Gatolandia 76 1972 Now it's going to be tough - we're at the start! (Condor) The volume revolves around the Olympic Games . Strangely enough, however, in a fictional country and four years later. Why this decision was made is unclear. Published by Condor as a special volume and not as a regular edition. Carlsen left out this volume.
13 Operación ¡bomba! 1972 A bomb for the boss! (Condor, 13)
A bomb for the boss (Carlsen, 12)
This is the first band in which Ibáñez personally appears. The original song Amanece from the Eurovision Contest 1972 appears twice . The Carlsen edition has no background on the cover picture.
14th Los diamantes de la gran duquesa 1972 Well, where is the million? (Condor, 14)
The Grand Duchess's Diamonds (Carlsen, 13)
For the scenes where Jeff has his foot in a cast, Ibáñez probably took the Spirou and Fantasio story The Plan of the Cyclotrope as a model, where Fantasio's foot in a cast can also have mishaps.
15th El otro "yo" del profesor Bacterio 1973 We are the saviors of the nation! (Condor, 16)
Boys stay relaxed - here comes the shock! (Condor new text, 164)
We are the saviors of the nation (Carlsen, 14)
The central point of the story, that a new drug brings the "different me" to light, is a clear reference to the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde .
16 Los monstruos 1973 Let it be, Frankenstein! (Condor, 25)
Full of shock - all screws are loose! (Condor new text, 176)
17th Elixir de la vida 1973 Not at all, Professor! (Condor, 18)
18th El circo 1973 The next number without a network (Condor, 19)
Nothing but grief ... with the number! (Condor new text, 171)
19th El antídoto 1973 Danger recognized - ran away (Condor, 20)
The insane act in the ... (gulp!) Rogue state! (Condor new text, 172)
From this album onwards, rhyming titles were used in the Condor version.
20th Los invasores 1974 Back into space, otherwise there will be a riot! (Condor, 21)
Fresh from space ...? Our case! (Condor new text, 167)
The gag that the spoked umbrella on an umbrella runs like a spider (mistaken for an alien by Fred and Jeff) was borrowed from a gag from Gaston .
21st Los cacharros majaretas 1974 Every test, a devil's festival! (Condor, 22)
This is pure plowing - on the ox tour! (Condor new text, 166)
The fact that Bakterius is promoting its whiz kid is part of the joke, as whiz kid has been known for a long time and with the Sea Harrier one of them has also been in military use since 1966.
22nd ¡A las Armas! 1974 Hot irons - cold feet! (Condor, 23)
23 El plano de Alí-gusa-no 1974 A job that leaves the tatters flying! (Condor, 28)
Panic, horror - the scraps are flying here! (Condor new text, 178)
The model here is clearly a story from Benni Bärenstark , in which a contract for a worthless piece of desert was also torn into parts, and where oil is later found.
24 Pánico en el zoo 1975 This job is simply beastly! (Condor, 26)
Real MONKEY GEIL - NO bone remains intact! (Condor new text, 180)

The short stories

The short stories in the series do not have a uniform publication strategy in Spain, as in Germany. In Germany, some of Condor's short stories have been published in the volumes Immer ran an den Feind (11), Immer into ins Abenteuer (12), So ein Crap, this List (17) and A job where you leave your hair (24), others however in the many anniversary and extra editions. Carlsen, in turn, will publish many of the short stories in 2020 in an anthology.

Due to the lack of information (also on the German titles), the information here is incomplete and many stories are completely missing from this list. The stories in the Condor volumes So, this job is dangerous (53), The big thing, is pretty link! (57) and Ogottogott - all that's left for us is junk! (59) are left out, as these were not created by Ibáñez.
