Cristo Rei is an East Timorese administrative office ( Portuguese Posto Administrativo ), which forms the eastern part of the state capital Dili . The name of the administrative office is derived from the monumental Jesus statue Cristo Rei , which stands at the eastern end of the Bay of Dili on Cape Fatu Cama . The seat of the administration is in Becora .

Until 2014, the administrative offices were still referred to as sub-districts . Before the 2015 territorial reform, Cristo Rei had an area of ​​65.33 km². Now it is 80.62 km².

The administrative office belongs to the municipality of Dili and is divided into eight sucos : Balibar , Becora , Bidau Santana , Hera , Camea ( Kamea ), Culu Hun ( Kulu Hun ), Meti Aut and the Suco Ailok, which was separated from Becora in 2017 . Except for Meti Aut and Balibar, all sucos are defined as urban.

The base of the East Timorese Navy and a clinic are located in Hera . Dili prison is in Becora . The private home of the former President José Ramos-Horta is located in Meti Aut. Here he was shot and seriously injured on February 11, 2008 .

The beach of Cristo Rei on the Bay of Dili, the Areia Branca , and its hinterland, which consists of savannah and wetlands, are a game reserve and an Important Bird Area . Already in Suco Hera, between Cape Fatu Cama and Ponta Fatossídi, there is Dolok Oan beach on the bay of Fatu Cama .

Residents

62,848 people live in Cristo Rei (2015), of which 32,509 are men and 30,339 women. The population density is 779.5 inhabitants / km². The average age of the population is 19.7 years (2010, 2004: 18.3 years). The everyday language is Tetum , but Hera and Becora Leten also use the subdialect Lolein , which is a variant of Isní . It was introduced there by immigrants from Turiscai in the 19th century. Other East Timorese languages are also spoken, as more and more rural residents come to Dili in search of work.

Hera was one of the traditional kingdoms of Timor, ruled by a liurai . It appears on a list by Afonso de Castro , a former governor of Portuguese Timor who listed 47 empires in 1868.

In the Bidau district, which is now divided into Bidau Santana and Bidau Lecidere (in the administrative office of Nain Feto ), the Bidau ethnic group originally settled . This mixed population of Portuguese and locals from Larantuka ( Flores ), Solor and Timor controlled large parts of West Timor for centuries . They spoke Português de Bidau , a Creole Portuguese, until the 1960s . Over time, they switched more and more to standard Portuguese.

In order to be self-sufficient and to improve the household budget, the residents themselves create small fields and gardens in the city. 19% of the households in Cristo Rei have coconut palms, 22% grow cassava , 24% corn , 13% vegetables, 4% coffee and 4% rice. In addition, the inhabitants buy fish from the sea and keep pets such as chickens and pigs. There are several diving areas around Capa Fatu Cama that are open to tourists.

An oil power plant with seven generators and a total output of 120 MW has been in operation near Hera since November 29, 2011, which supplies Dili and the municipality of Liquiçá with electricity. Since 2012, the power plant has been operated by the Finnish company Wärtsilä .
