history
Until the 18th century
The emergence of Dürnau is likely to fall in the more recent expansion period of the 9th to 13th century. The place was first mentioned as Durnon in 1275 in the liber decimationis . The lower aristocratic family of the Dürner von Dürnau were probably in the service of the Counts of Aichelberg as ministerials from the 13th to the 15th century . In 1339 Dürnau became part of Württemberg . In 1479 Count Ulrich sold the place to the Lords of Zillenhardt . After the last Lord von Zillenhardt died out in 1623, the village fell to the Lords of Degenfeld . In 1684 the place was sold to Kurbayern . In 1711 the Degenfeld initially acquired one half, and in 1771 the other half.
19th and 20th centuries
Due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and the associated mediatization Dürnau 1806 was again incorporated into Württemberg and the Oberamt Göppingen . With the municipal reform in 1938 it came to the district of Göppingen .
Surname
The origin of the place name is not completely clear. The name is probably derived from a medieval watchtower that stood on the area of today's municipality.
Religions
Dürnau has been evangelical since the Reformation . Only since 1963 has there been a Roman Catholic church in the village (St. Michael), which belongs to the Bad Boll parish . Previously, the local Catholics were allowed to celebrate services in the Protestant church.

coat of arms
The blazon of Dürnau's coat of arms reads: In silver, a black horn with a golden fetter .
The coat of arms comes from the former local nobility of the Lords of Dürnau and was adopted in 1923. The black and white flag colors derived from this were awarded by the Ministry of the Interior on February 18, 1959.
Economy and Infrastructure
Educational institutions
Dürnau has a joint elementary school and a joint children's house with Gammelshausen . The school building was built between 1953 and 1955, the first kindergarten in 1970/71. In the years 1990–92 the school house was expanded. Before the joint school was built, the Dürnau school was located on the corner of Schulstrasse and Hauptstrasse. In 1995 another kindergarten was built next to the existing one. The new kindergarten was named "Regenbogen", the existing one was renamed "Sausewind". Most recently, in 2013, an additional building for a day nursery was built and connected to the two existing kindergarten buildings. The kindergartens were also merged. The new children's house was named "House of Little Feet".
Leisure and sports facilities
Dürnau has two sports fields, two tennis facilities as well as a basketball field, a skate park and a hard court. A youth center JUKA was available for young people in Dürnau until spring 2019, which was closed due to lack of demand. There is also a sports hall in Dürnau, the Kornberghalle, which has a stage and can therefore also be used for cultural events. The Kornberghalle was built between 1963 and 1966. In the basement of the Kornberghalle there is a gym and a teaching pool, which is also open to private individuals. The hall and swimming pool were last renovated in 2001. With the parish hall of the Protestant parish of Dürnau-Gammelshausen, space is also available for smaller events.
traffic
Dürnau can be reached via a district road (K 1446) from Gammelshausen and Bad Boll . Dürnau is connected to the community of Heiningen via a dirt road, which is not open to public transport. The Aichelberg junction of the A 8 motorway is about 7 km away. Dürnau was also the stopping point of the Voralbbahn , whose operation was stopped in 1989. Since then, Dürnau is only accessible by one bus line u. a. connected with the district town of Göppingen . In the 1930s, there was a material ropeway to the former quarry on Kornberg near Gruibingen .
Companies
At the northeastern end of the municipality there is an industrial area with several medium-sized companies. The premises of the Gral glassworks used to be located there . The Gralglas chimney was blown up in 1990. In addition, various craft businesses as well as a supermarket and a bakery are located in Dürnau. Until the 1990s, there was a small post office in the old school building on Hauptstrasse. Today there is a post office in a stationery shop in the castle building.
Attractions
A restored stables with a castle bridge, a moat and a castle cellar are reminiscent of the former moated castle Dürnau from the 12th century.
The church of St. Cyriakus , which was first mentioned in 1275, is the parish church of the Protestant parish in the church district of Göppingen . The church expansion of 1583 created a late mannerist building with late Gothic wall paintings (Ten Commandments, scenes from the life of Jesus) on the gallery on the north wall and numerous grave monuments of the Lords of Zillenhart. Christoph Martin von Degenfeld , among others, is buried here. From 1681 to 1964 the church was used as a simultaneous church. The crescent moon on the top of the church tower is not uncommon for churches and, contrary to legend, it is not an item of booty from the Turkish wars.
To the south of the community there is an educational fruit path and the Swabian Proverbs Path .
Dürnau received a silver medal in the state competition " Our village should be more beautiful - our village has a future" in the 1999-2001 competition.
Museums
In the archway of the former castle there is now a glass museum that bears witness to the eventful history of the Gralglas glassworks, which used to be located on site .
